Rangers vs Panthers

vs
RANGERS
PANTHERS
2-2
2-0

The Aesthetics
One is arguably too detailed and one is arguably too simplistic. My argument is the Rangers logo utilizes 14 letters and I'm not a fan of that as you well know. This point goes to the Panthers.
Panthers

The Nickname
It's nice to be a park ranger in a league filled with animal mascots. The Ranger protects the endangered Panthers and their habitat and so has the upper hand in this relationship. Count it.
Rangers

The Analysis
When looking at a logo for the Rangers, a shield of some sort is probably the smartest choice. But times have changed and this logo desperately needs a rejuvenation. It has one if you check the shoulder of the team's third jersey. In fact, check the crest on that jersey and let's just go with that one. But more than that, the Panthers logo is cooler than almost anything.

Flyers vs Penguins

vs
FLYERS
PENGUINS
2-2
0-1

The Aesthetics
Both teams call the same state home and both logos make use of a single color outside of black and white. The orange and gold are quite unique but there is almost too much detail in the Penguins logo. However, that seems to add to it in this case.
Penguins

The Nickname
A Penguin is one of the rare birds that is unable to Fly. Too bad.
Flyers

The Analysis
This point is incredibly difficult to award in this case. Neither logo makes a very good representation of its locale but hit the nickname right on the money. The angry penguin veers away from cartoonish yet can be bogged down in minute detail. Meanwhile the generic winged "P" fits well with the generic nickname. It comes down to this: When looking at them side by side, the stronger logo is the Flyers by a hair.

Flyers vs Rangers

vs
FLYERS
RANGERS
2-1
1-2

The Aesthetics
Both logos symbolize storied franchises but as I've said many times before, words can kill the aesthetics of any logo. That and I love subtle letters such as the "P" in the Flyers logo.
Flyers

The Nickname
As with any bird, it's the job of a Ranger to protect the Flyer, who therefore has the upper hand.
Rangers

The Analysis
Quite honestly, red, white and blue have never been such important colors to New York City than in the aftermath of the attacks of 9/11. That makes the Rangers colors very significant. Meanwhile, the Flyers logo doesn't go a very long way to symbolize its home city of Philadelphia.
Rangers

Islanders vs Thrashers

vs
ISLANDERS
THRASHERS
0-0
0-2

The Aesthetics
I've never been the biggest fan of words or hockey sticks especially in hockey logos. It's a little too on-the-nose if you ask me. The Islanders have both and for that reason they should lose the point. But then this logo is supposed to be traditional right? They've used it for a few decades now (minus those couple of years with the Gordon's fisherman). Still, the Thrashers logo is visually interesting and makes great use of color.
Thrashers

The Nickname
If a Thrasher was flying over an Islander, the bird would surely poop on his head. I know, effort.
Thrashers

The Analysis
It stood the test of time even when a mid-'90s mistake couldn't. The Islanders logo may only be 35 years old, but to many hockey fans, it's been around forever. But that doesn't automatically win you a point in this competition. You need to really show something. In this case, the Islanders logo shows a sense of where it's from with the map of Long Island featured. The Atlanta Thrasher? Maybe. But I'm not getting a feel for the city.

Senators vs Maple Leafs

vs
SENATORS
MAPLE LEAFS
1-1
0-2

The Aesthetics
The Senators logo makes much more use of color than the Maple Leafs. Another thing that detracts from the Maple Leafs logo is, as always, the words spelled out. I believe it was in the '70s or '80s that the Leafs actually donned a wordless Leaf on their uniform shoulders. What ever happened to that?
Senators

The Nickname
If a Senator, walking down a sidewalk, stepped on a Maple Leaf that had fallen from a tree, he would no doubt crush it with a crackle.
Senators

The Analysis
Despite the fact that I like the use of a design similar to the Canadian flag's primary element as the Maple Leafs logo, I always go back to my distaste for logos which spell out a name and/or city. But I'd settle for something even a little more interesting to the eye. The logo used on the third jerseys is a good example of what can be done. And even though I like the Senators logo, it wouldn't hurt if they did the same. They're third jersey crest is one of the best. Ultimately, however, they do get this point.

Rangers vs Canadiens

vs
RANGERS
CANADIENS
1-1
0-0

The Aesthetics
The blue, red and white abound here. Truthfully, I like the Canadiens logo's blue is better. It's a little deeper and contrasts the red nicely. Unfortunately for the Rangers, the spelling out of the team name and city always makes for an unwelcome distraction. The Canadiens logo not only has a "C" but a subtle "H."
Canadiens

The Nickname
A park Ranger is a big fella who lives in the wilderness. A little French Canadien would get pounded in a fistfight. No chance.
Rangers

The Analysis
For both teams, the nicknames make it difficult to come up with a logo that pushes beyond letters. Both logos come from Original Six teams and so have been around a number of years. Their staying power is impressive but do they really represent their team names? The Rangers logo utilizes a simple shield common in many logos while the Canadiens actually works in a subtle "H" that means something to French fans. For being clever, the Canadiens squeak by with the point.

Panthers vs Capitals

vs
PANTHERS
CAPITALS
1-0
1-0

The Aesthetics
Both logos use a lot of detail and eye-catching elements, but face it, the Panthers is just so much cooler. It's hard to say who has the better colors, but I"m going have to give the Panthers the edge here.
Panthers

The Nickname
The Panther is an endangered species and it is in the Capital where they write the laws to protect them.
Capitals

The Analysis
As I've said, the Panthers is a very appropriate nickname for a team from Florida. Not that Capitals doesn't work for a team from Washington, D.C. Ultimately, we have to look at the colors and logo design. I'm giving the edge to the Panthers because of the Capitals' use of hockey sticks in the logo. They do add some nice symmetry but they're rather unnecessary.
Panthers

Rangers vs Senators

vs
RANGERS
SENATORS
1-0
0-1

The Aesthetics
I know the Rangers logo has been around forever but it's a little boring. I'm also a little annoyed at the fact that, while it is the primary logo for the team, it never makes an appearance on any of the team's jerseys. The Senators, however, is a solid design that we actually see on the uniforms.
Senators

The Nickname
In a straight-up fistfight, a Ranger could totally take a Senator.
Rangers

The Analysis
The Rangers have been around forever, though there's a case to be made that the Senators have too — they just had to endure a long hiatus. Ultimately, though, I really think the Rangers need to upgrade their look and go with the third jerseys full time, including the primary and secondary logos. That's why they don't get the point.
Senators

Flyers vs Bruins

vs
FLYERS
BRUINS
1-1
0-0

The Aesthetics
Here, both logos are very simple and very similar. Black and white are featured primarily with a slim helping of a color and each features the first letter of the home city. While the Bruins logo simply features a "B" in a circle, the "P" attached to a wing in the Flyers gives the feeling of movement and is therefore more eye-catching.
Flyers

The Nickname
Assuming the Flyer is a bird, when it lands in the tree, the Bruin will climb up and eat it. Yum!
Bruins

The Analysis
Both teams have been around for a long time. And while the Bruins emblem has gone through many alterations and upgrades, the Flyers logo has remained largely the same throughout its lifetime. Cheers to staying power and Halloween colors.
Flyers

Sabres vs Senators

vs
SABRES
SENATORS
1-1
0-0

The Aesthetics
The use of color in both logos is very appealing to the eye. There aren't too many or too few. The problem for the Senators comes in the detail. While I'm glad they removed the team name from the gold circle several years back, we're still a little heavy on the minutia. The Sabres logo features a single small element — the buffalo's red eye — it makes the logo more aesthetically interesting.
Sabres

The Nickname
A Senator is a person who makes laws. Untrained, he stands no chance against a soldier with a sharpened Sabre.
Sabres

The Analysis
It's interesting how neither logo really seems to capture the team's nickname. In the Sabres logo, there isn't a sword in sight, as I've mentioned. With the Senators, I see what seems to be a Spartan soldier. Still, the Senators logo is much stronger in portraying its nickname. I also think the color combination is better. I like the Sabres logo back when it was black and red.
Senators
