Habs Centennial Jersey Sked
Thanks to everyone who responded to my previous post! The Montreal Canadiens' released Centennial jersey event list via their 2009-10 season pocket schedule. See it here, courtesy of Dante_X.
Five nights during this campaign will be dedicated to old-time Montreal hockey sweaters, and they are scheduled to be worn as follows.
- Saturday, Oct. 31 - vs Toronto (1912-13/striped)
- Tuesday, Nov. 10 - vs Calgary (1910-11/red)
- Saturday, Nov. 21 - vs Detroit (1909-10/blue)
- Saturday, Jan. 23 - vs NY Rangers (1910-11/red)
- Saturday, Feb. 13 - vs Philadelphia (1909-10/blue)
Let me point out the irony is not lost on me that the Habs will don the scary striped jersey on Halloween night. Speaking of which, in case you're not up on your Canadiens history and you don't know your 1909 jersey from your 1910 jersey, here's a quick refresher.
Personally, I can't wait to see the latter two. Not sure which one I like better. They're just so unlike anything else in the NHL these days. Shame we have to look back a century to find quality hockey sweaters.
By the way, Icethetics reader and Habs fan Adam makes a good point. The actually 100th anniversary date — December 4 — isn't listed as a Centennial jersey night. Makes you wonder if they have something else entirely up their sleeve that night as they face the Bruins. (I wish the Bs would sport that Winter Classic sweater a month early.)
Anyway, thanks again to those of you who contributed to this post. I'm adding the special dates to the calendar now.

Am I the only person who loves the striped sweater? Sure it doesn't look too good by itself but with the socks and the blue gear they wear with it, I think it looks amazing. I can't wait for the debut of the blue one though. I wonder if they will stay true to the set that went with it: solid white pants and solid red socks.
I'm not sure if you watched the game they played with them last season against the Bruins in January, I believe.
Bob Gainey said they actually were a distraction for his own team. Not to mention for the viewers, it was disorienting to watch them skate around in them on TV. I know it made me dizzy. It had such a negative reaction from players to fans that they chose not to wear them the second time they were scheduled to wear them last season (they played with a different vintage jersey).
This jersey is also bad luck for Habs because the game they wore them for, 2 guys got seriously injured (Robert Lang & Guillaume Latendresse).
So, I'm left to wonder if they will indeed wear them again this season. The jersey is not bad, it's just horrible to watch them play in them.
Those Stripes DO Have More Contrast Than The First Time. Two And A Half Out Of Three.

Double Post!
i like the barber pole jersey. also, the hockey news just released a best sweaters ever special issue. ill try to get some pictures from my magazine copy and send them to chris.
I think that last jersey is what the Minnesota Wild jersey should look like. Just the right amount of green, and no crazy piping and striping.
Habitant, I did see the game on TV and that's why I love them. I think it doesn't look too good just by itself in the picture, as seen here, but with the whole uniform and in action they look amazing.

That's interesting but how about this : It'll be the first time ever we have a battle of the maple leafs/ leaves, right? I'm assuming Toronto will wear their alternate...but either way, you'll have both sides sporting the leaf. Cool !
I am a proud owner of a Robert Lang "barber pole" Habs jersey.
Of course now he's not even with them anymore.
Hey Steve, it's cool you like them. You're one of the few who enjoyed watching them play with them. I was actually getting dizzy. But, in all honesty, if they get the win, I couldn't care less what they wear.
I remember when they unveiled all those jerseys last season, the one that stuck out for me is the blue ones from 1909-10 season. I can't wait until they play with them.
Anyone know why the Habs centennial is being celebrated over 2 seasons? I intially thought they were celebrating it over a calendar year (2009), thus it would encompass 2 seasons, but I see they are wearing these jerseys in 2010 too, so technically this has been a 2008-2010 celebration.
I don't mind the barber pole jersey too much...maybe fewer stripes would help. I noticed they made the blue and red about the same saturation level to eliminate further noise. Still, looks better on a fan than on the ice/broadcast.
I enjoyed all the jerseys the Habs unveiled last year/this coming year.
The striped jersey is definately different, and loud. But in it's own way....colorfully unique.
The Blue jersey is nice.... but my favorite is the red jersey with green leaf. Hope to own one.
I love the blue one it is stunning!
The Corona jersey looks pretty sharp!
Wow. I actually like the last two... and that's coming from someone who really dislikes the striped one.
Those striped jerseys are off the wall. I really like them as a one-time 3rd.
The barber pole jersey, and the vintage Ottawa 67's jersey that is similar, are popular beyond all reason. People want to wear these jerseys in their beer leagues - I have put both men's and ladies' teams into them. I always thought that they would nauseate their opponents.
What about the Canadiens wearing their barberpole sweaters for a future Halloween night at home against Vancouver, with the Canucks wearing their Flying double V uniforms??
I do love their old red and green sweaters. Dark green is the perfect shade of green to go with red. I wish the Devils had never parted with those colours in the first place. Too much red and black.
Thanks for posting the schedule for the jerseys. I am really surprised that they are wearing the barberpole ones again. Must be the merchandising and marketing staff at the Canadiens requesting it to clean out some unsold stock.
I don't mind the jersey but also agree that fewer, wider stripes like Ottawa's original ones would be a lot more pleasing to the eye, but it that's what they wore back then, then that's what we get.
The problem I have with the two they are going to wear this year is what name to put on them now that Saku Koivu is gone...
I love all of these.
I thought that the players did not like wearing the striped jerseys so they nixed them? If I were a player on either side I would find them distracting. If you remember from last season, after the Habs played in those jerseys the team really took a turn for the worse. I would make them available for fan purchase, but I don't know if playing in them is the idea.
I own the red & green and it is a thing of beauty ! ...Too bad the player on it (Markov) is injured and won't even wear it :P
I was just in Montreal and picked up the blue one - it's even better looking in person than in pictures and gets so much attention when wearing it out on the street as there really is no other hockey jersey like it (which, by the way, the design pays homage to the Quebec provincial flag sans fleur de lis) I can't wait to see it on the ice under the bright lights.
