Pens 3rd Jersey Sked

The Pittsburgh Penguins have released their third jersey schedule for 2009-10. The powder blue sweater will make its season debut when the Pens take on the Lightning this Saturday and be worn 11 other times throughout the season, including twice on the road.

Here's the full schedule, which comes from the Penguins' web site.

  • Saturday, Oct. 17 - vs Tampa Bay
  • Friday, Oct. 30 - @ Columbus
  • Monday, Nov. 16 - vs Anaheim
  • Friday, Nov. 27 - @ NY Islanders
  • Thursday, Dec. 3 - vs Colorado
  • Saturday, Dec. 12 - vs Florida
  • Sunday, Dec. 27 - vs Toronto
  • Tuesday, Jan. 5 - vs Atlanta
  • Thursday, Jan. 28 - vs Ottawa
  • Monday, Feb. 1 - vs Buffalo
  • Sunday, Feb. 14 - vs Nashville
  • Saturday, Mar. 6 - vs Dallas

The Pens aren't the only ones who've recently released a special sweater schedule. I'm working on getting confirmation for the Montreal Canadiens' centennial jersey nights for this season. Can anyone help with that?

Why are they wearing them at away games? Pittsburgh fans should be the only ones subjected to seeing that fail in person

They are very SHARP retros. Unlike Atlanta's disaster, the Penguins' thirds are very classy. I'd like to see the Pens bring back their black 80s design, though. However, the double-blue look is awesome. Wonder why they are wearing them for a couple of road games? Especially in Columbus.

The Penguins 3rds are gorgeous; one of the best jerseys in the league, and should be their standard uniform. They top out uniform polls for a reason. I can't believe there are people who who apparently don't like them.

These are sooooo much better than their drab black and tan monstrosities. How can anyone in their right mind prefer those?

The running joke here in Pittsburgh is that the Pens have set themselves up for 12 losses with wearing the pansy powder blue uni's. I wasn't a fan of them wearing it during the Winter Classic and I'm not a fan now. If anything they should have used the '91 uni's(the 1st Stanley Cup uni's). Could be worse I guess, atleast they didn't use the Howard Baldwin Bankruptcy/Corporate PIGEON logo. Thank God that thing is dead! I'd like to see a new 3rd when they move into the new barn. Something along the line of the '91 unis, Yellow gold and all.

the pale blues are great because on the road, teams can (or should i say : they have the ability to...as i'm sure there's some bogus rule to prohibit this) still wear their dark homes. The pale blue against either the dark Columbus blue jersey or the royal blue Isles could still work. I'm sure the home team'll wear white during these games ... god forbid two color'ed unis do battle.

anyone catch my rangers against the leafs? it's so nice to see the beautiful broadway blueshirts against the third jersey (multi-pronged leaf with the shoulder yolks). ecstacy for dorks like me who care about that stuff.

I love these jerseys. I never understood why a team named after an arctic or antarctic animal (whichever of those 2) and played in an arena nicknamed "The Igloo" wore Black and Gold. I know WHY they decided to go with those colors, they actually thought that because the Pirates and Steelers wore those colors and won championships, they would get the same luck. Personally, I think it's dumb.

These jerseys also give the Pens a unique look. Something, I believe is missing in this league is teams that are afraid to give themselves a unique look/color.

People might hate the Coyotes jerseys, but they're nice because they are different and have a color unique to them only. Same goes for Atlanta. They wear baby blue, but they stand out. I'm very happy Philly decided to wear their orange vintage jerseys full-time. Orange is their color and they should use it to stand out.

So many teams wear black and navy blue. I find it's so mundane. I hate catching a game and not being able to tell which team is playing because their shirts look like someone else's. That's just my opinion.

Some might say that a lot of teams wear red as well, but they wear different types of red so it helps them look unique.

If I could help it, I'd have Pittsburgh ditch the black and gold, create a white version of the powder blue jersey and make them my full-time jerseys.

Well said, as usual, Habitant.

I got the Habs' pocket schedule at home with all the date for the retro jerseys. For some reason, the barber pole one is there.

Habitant : Sorry Dude, check your facts. The Pittsburgh Pirates Hockey Club(circa 1924 - 1929) were the first professional sports team in Pittsburgh to don the Black and Yellow gold colors. The Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club wore Red/White/Blue back then and the Pittsburgh Steelers weren't born until 1933. The official colors of the City of Pittsburgh are Black and Yellow gold. Check out the City's flag: http://www.heritage-flag.com/city.htm True the Pens did don Black and Yellow gold in January of 1980 because of Steelers/Pirates BUT it created a unique situation in that all the professional sports teams in Pittsburgh shared the same Black and Yellow gold color scheme. The official colors of the City of Pittsburgh. I do believe we're the ONLY city that can lay claim to that, again I do wish that they'd ditch the Vegas gold and go back to the Yellow Gold.

The Habs are supposed to wear their first jersey of their history (the blue one with the white "C") on december 4th (date of their 100th anniversary) against the Boston Bruins. :)

Habs centennial jersey nights goes as follow:

- October 31st: Maple Leafs at Canadiens -> 1912-1913 jersey (Barber pole)
- November 10th: Flames at Canadiens -> 1910-1911 jersey (Red, white and green? jersey with maple leaf)
- Novembre 21st: Red Wings at Canadiens -> 1909-1910 jersey (Blue with white "C")
- January 23rd: Rangers at Canadiens -> 1910-1911 jersey
- February 13th: Flyers at Canadiens -> 1909-1910 jersey

There we go ! =). Information comes from pocket shedule that the habs releashed

That's funny: the Barber Pole jersey will be worn on Halloween night! I guess it is because last year, they were supposed to wear it twice but Bob Gainey refused that his team wear it a second time. Now I guess they are catching up and will wear it for the second time so that all centennial jerseys are worn at least twice.

Had to jump in here...

Black and yellow makes perfect sense for the penguins since penguins are black and yellow. And if you'll notice, even though the jerseys were blue at inception, the logo was always black and yellow as well. Add to this the previous mention of the original Pittsburgh Pirates hockey club. So to say that the Pens just switched to B&Y arbitrarily, or that it doesn't make any sense, is false.

This is coming from somebody who likes the blues as a third. I just wish they'd go back to yellow for the unis, if only because it looks so much better. I can't stand the tan.

Also, I never minded the "pigeon" logo - I thought it was a good design and would work as a shoulder patch (although I know that would never happen). I can say with certainty that the 90's pigeon jerseys were 100x better as a whole than the primaries now... the tan and side panels are awful.

Oct 16 · 10:00 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterRyan

Ryan, I agree with you about the Pigeon logo uni's being 100% better than the current unis BUT (for as much as I despise the Pigeon logo), personally I wouldn't have minded the Pigeon logo as much if it were introduced under different circumstances. The Pens won 2 Cups with the Skating Penguin and then BANG Howard Baldwin up and changes the whole uniform/logo. WHY?? WHY NOW?? To me the Pigeon logo represented everything that went wrong with the team from '93-'03. No true Pens fan liked the uniform/logo change. I quit buying Pens merchandise after the introduction Pigeon logo. It's not just the Pens either. Islanders and the Gortons fisherman (fanbase backlash led the ownership to go back to original logo) the Sabres and the slug (fanbase backlash is leading the ownership to go back to original logo for the '10/'11 season). When the Pens came into the NHL in '67 even though the colors were blue/white the logo was that of a Skating Penguin.
