The Nashville Predators will be among a half-dozen teams to debut third jerseys in the fall. Now we're getting more information on that subject from Tennessean beat writer John Glennon.
In his blog Inside Predators, Glennon wrote about yesterday's Skate of the Union Address at the Sommet Center. The first two paragraphs are all about the team's upcoming alternate sweater.
Preds owner David Freeman said the team’s new third jersey is likely to be revealed publicly in September. He described it as a very traditional-looking jersey, with a design that "came purely from some of the original six teams."
Freeman said the third jerseys will frequently be worn at home on Saturdays. Nashville has 15 home Saturday games this season.
Good news for a team that has all too commonly been the butt of jersey jokes, with its attempts at being cutting edge. After all, at just over 10 years old, it's not like the Predators have a lot of tradition to draw on. The "mustard jersey" was certainly memorable but I'm not sure how fondly it will be held.
It'll be interesting to see what "traditional-looking" Original Six elements designers will borrow for this new uniform. I'm anticipating a common color like blue, more horizontal lines and a simplification of the color scheme. That would fit well with the alleged leak I posted a few weeks ago.
In addition, we now have an unveiling date to look forward to. As with the Wild, the third jersey is expected to be unveiled in September. Of course if anything comes out any sooner, count on Icethetics.
By the way, the Predators web site has undergone its' change to the new league-wide format.

i hope to hell it looks nice
I like the idea of Original Six inspiration, but I don't know how their very contemporary logo will work with a classic design. I wonder if they'll do a diagonal text like the Rangers? That might look good.
Word is that the Preds are looking at using a tri-color logo in order to simplify the design. I like the idea of the diagonal text. It'll be interesting to see what they've got in store.
Simplicity is good. Ths is encouraging.
I have high hopes for this third.... it better live up to the hype. It's very encouraging to see them compare it to the uniforms of the original six teams, hopefully it will work out.
If it is anywhere near the concept (minus the checkered pattern) it could be a really nice jersey.
I actually think the mustard was kinda unique / catchy. What's wrong with it? Nashville has a history with teams wearing yellow / royal blue. Why not run with that ? The checker / blue jersey was fine, but why not have the checkerboard appear with mustard as the accent or use it for the horizontal stripes?
It seems to me there is a whole level of anxiety in the sports i love (baseball and hockey ) about being "different." Hell, I'm watching the Yanks game yesterday, and it's a joy to see a team in non-traditional colors like green and yellow for the A's. Besides them, the O's, Giants, White Sox, Mariners, Marlins, Pirates, Rockies, every team employs blue and/or red. That means about 23 / 30 teams are in the same color scheme or a variation of one another. That's 75 percent of basic sameness. Hockey is not that bad, but similar.
Guys, it's ok to have a little color, to be bold. The 2 sports I have less interest in are much better in terms of their uniforms. Anyone in the country knows the Celtics/ Packers / Cowboys / Lakers. Have to ask yourself why? Sure, they know the historic Yanks and Sox...but think about the others.
Why are theNHL and MLB owners / brass so conservative? Why don't the bruins have an all-yellow jersey if Nash. is a baby. How in the world don't the Kings make use of the sweet purple they employ on their jerseys and have a purple-based jersey? Took this long to get Minnesota a green jersey? Stars are afraid of their green. Took too long to have the Flyers in their orange (one of the best league-wide). Everything is primarily black / black / blue / red/ blue/ black/ red/ black/ blue. C'mon , guys !
MP, everything you say in your last paragraph has happened. http://www.nhluniforms.com/ All of those teams have tried those things and Minnesota and Philly debuted in the league in green/orange respectively.
And I don't think anyone on here is against your point of bright colours, we love them! What people are asking for is simplification and being more traditional. For example, many people dislike the Sabres current jerseys but love the Sabres thirds. It has nothing to do with the colours, because the colours are the same. It's all about the style.
Everyone loves bright and interesting colours, it's when you do crazy designs like a giant V stripe or a giant horn with a million angled stripes (or just a stripe pattern so experimental that it doesn't even look like a hockey jersey anymore) that turns people off.
Steve:
Yes, it happened; I said that. But it took too damn long. Minnesota should never be without a green jersey, same with Philly and its orange.
And I'm not promoting crazy designs either. Your point seems muddied. I brought up the lack of color, and you spin it into something about crazy stripes and horns.
Simplification and color should be the hallmark of good jerseys.
I like the predators current jersey, that navy one does nothing for me.
Most in Nashville love the "mustard" jersey. When I go to games there, I see a lot of them, even though they haven't wore them for a few years.
Most outside of Nashville hate the mustard jersey, because they think it's ugly. I think in Nashville it's a pride thing. They embraced the thing that everyone outside of the fanbase hated.
I'm not from Nashville, and I'm not really a fan of the team, but I thought the mustard yellow sweaters were so cool and original, I bought one. Of course I also own a yellow Giant V Canucks jersey as well, so maybe I just like ugly things.
Always loved the mustard jersey, bought one as soon as they were available in Canada, Yep, all the way up here in Winnipeg.
I hope the third jerseys dont look like a cheesy imitation on an original 6 idea
