Wild, Avs 3rd Jersey Info

The Minnesota Wild have announced the dates for the official unveiling of of their new third jersey as well as its on-ice debut, according to their web site.

The Wild will offer fans a first look at the new green sweater on Sunday, August 30 at the Minnesota State Fair. It will then debut on Wednesday, October 21 when they face the Avs — who will also be getting a new third jersey (scroll down for more on that).

The National Hockey League’s (NHL) Minnesota Wild announced today that the club will introduce a new third jersey for the upcoming 2009-10 NHL season on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 12:30 p.m. at the Minnesota State Fair’s FAN Central building.

Minnesota’s new third jersey will be unveiled on stage in front of the FAN Central building starting at 12:30 p.m. The event will include Wild players and Nordy. The Wild’s State Fair booth will be located in the new FAN Central building this year at the intersection of Dan Patch Avenue and Underwood Street.

Minnesota is scheduled to wear its new third jerseys in a game for the first time on Wednesday, Oct. 21 against the Colorado Avalanche.

Not mentioned in this release is the fact that Derek Boogaard will be modeling the new sweater at the event. I'm sure there will be pictures and you can count on Icethetics to do all the heavy lifting for you.

I also added a countdown to the sidebar since we have an actual date! Just 11 days to go...

Now comes the time when I have to eat my words. It doesn't happen too often, but when I do make a mistake, I own up to it. Most of you read my initial reaction to the rumored leak of the Avs' new third jersey. Out of embarrassment, I won't link to it (you can find it), but I basically called it a sham.

I have come into new information that now has me 99% convinced that the rendering originally posted at the SportsLogos.net forums, and later picked up by Mile High Hockey, the Denver Post and Icethetics (damn!), is actually rather accurate.

To protect my source (whose first name is Matt), I won't go into detail, but let's just say, more or less (emphasis on more), this is what the Avalanche will be wearing on several occasions this coming season.

Yep, this will be the Avs' new third jersey

So, to Matt and everyone else who counts on Icethetics for solid information, I sincerely apologize for my rush to judgment. If you guys got some of the emails I get on a daily basis, you'd be cynical too. But it's no excuse. There you have it.

Now, regarding the jersey itself, I think it'll be nice to see the Avs in blue — a subtle nod to their franchise's history perhaps? Burgundy is undeniably the color most associated with the Avalanche, but isn't the purpose of a third jersey to experiment with your look? To color outside the lines?

Based on earlier comments, I know many of you aren't so thrilled about the sweater, but all I can say is give it a chance. And don't rush to judgment the way I did. Wait until you see it on the ice.

And that's my take on that. Later tonight, I'll get to those pictures of the new Team USA jerseys. I'm trying collect the cream of the crop as there doesn't seem to be any official source the way there was for Team Canada.

I also promised to post all of the other Ice Bulls submissions that came in. They'll be up at some point tonight. Over 25 different artists sent in artwork in less than a week! Icethetics readers/designers really are the best around! Also, if you haven't seen it yet, head to IceBulls.org to see the team's new logo.

I'd really like to have a better 3rd jersey from the Avs. I like the fact that they came with a nice blue which remember me when I was young and I was watching the nordiques at the Colisée but damn the shoulder lines are so boring! what is this? they really should include some lys flowers or broken lines or even the old shoulder pad of the quebec nordiques. This would be nice, sweet and classic. No mistakes with that.

Well done to the winning artist on the Ice Bulls logo, it looks amazing.

Hi Chris
As a big fan of Icethetics, I have a little request. Because my team is the habs, I would like you do something with their logo or something, like designing a sketch jersey or something, if possible. Thanks alot.

My problem with the picture that is being used is the use of black. There was a mock-up on that same SportsLogo thread that used gray/silver in place of the black and it looked so much better. I guess we'll know for sure once the jersey is actually out there.

You're a Lightning fan Chris. Shame is no stranger, more like a frequent companion. ;p

That would certainly explain my comfort with it.

I don't think the black is that random, considering that the Avs have solid black pants. The fact that they use solid black pants in the first place, however, is kind of random/out of place, though.

My biggest problem with what we've seen so far is the color combo - something about that blue is just a little off with everything else. Like Chris said, though, it's usually hard to judge these things without seeing either a high quality picture of the actual jersey or seeing it in person.

I saw a rendering on the Official Avalanche message board and the jersey had more subdued colors. It also had more of a squarish neck design, as opposed to the triangular one in the pic above. It kinda looked like the Sharks current jersey, or the Devils old jersey. If that's the case, then I approve. However, the pic above is just horrendous!

avs 3rd.........ugh. Dare I say I would rather see them with a black alt? Haha, maybe not, but this doesn't jump off the page for me.

Maybe it's because it's not a picture of an actual jersey, just a mock up. I'd like to see the physical jersey, in some kind of unveiling, and then again on the ice.

Kinda weird route for them to go... it doesn't look terrible... certainly better than their current home and away mess. I've said it before and i'll say it again... Hockey jerseys need waist stripes, why does reebok hate them so much?

but, i'll believe this when i see it on the ice... i'm a little skeptical

I agree with matt, I was one of those readers who disliked the third at the first glance, but I'll give it a chance when I see the jersey (Please have a bottom stripe, oh please!!!).

Ugly. What's wrong with this franchise? Didn't they try this Ranger rip-off a few years back?
It looked weird back then, and it looks weird now. All they did was change the colors.
Seems like teams are getting lazier and lazier when it comes to designing jerseys nowadays.

The older original teams are part of the group that seem to get it....... the rest have a lot to learn.

I think the jersey will be alright (at least it's very colourful!) My only issues are the fact that it has no stripes at the bottom and it looks like its going to have those out of place black armpits. Other than that I like it because it's some what simple and not over done. Not to mention because of the blue it has that Nordiques feel.

very nice very simpe, something to look at foe avs fans now that sakic is gone

Jason, though weird, the black pants and helmet can be explained. When they were moving, they didn't have time to have custom pants and such made up, as both of their colors would have required a custom order, so they had to go with a stock color. Those are Black, navy, Bright Red, and royal. All except black would have been a complete mismatch and look pretty awful, except the royal which would have been close, but not quite right.

Same with the black helmets and gloves. In fact, for some games at the start they wore the black helmets with the home whites as well as the aways, until the NHL decided it was too confusing for the refs and had them buy a set of white helmets.

And I guess it looked good enough, black will go with most anything, so they kept it. Probably a good thing too, as changing jersey manufacturers has changed the color at least once.

the only team that can rock the diagonal lettering is the rangers. sorry pens and avs.

Aug 20 · 9:49 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterpotvin sucks!

thats cuase the rangers's logo sucks, they're too scarred to put it on a jersey,

Aug 20 · 10:01 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterfraser40

hhmm......
i wonder where the sleeve numbers would go
above the stripes
or below?

Aug 20 · 10:32 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterfraser40

That is a pretty bad looking jersey, I mean I thought it was great when it was burgundy. The NHL is all about retro now, so maybe some sort of design paying tribute to Quebec, or even a blue jersey with the foot. I just really think that 3d jerseys should get some type of approval, I was under the impression the whole reason to get new jerseys was 9a.) to clean up the league, and (b.) MONEY. If that was the case than Atlanta would of been told to do a whole new jersey.

LOOKING FORWARD TO CAL., FLA., and any other 3rd jerseys this season.

LETS GO FLYERS

i dont get why theres blue in the avs one, thats like the leafs wearing burgundy

Aug 24 · 7:14 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterleafs=awesome

thats stupid why would the leafs wear bugundy, its ot in their colour scheme, but for the avs blue is in the clour scheme and its also the alternate colour so why not use it on the alternate jersey

Aug 25 · 8:17 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterfraser40

Hey Fraser... watch it. The Rangers aren't 'afraid' to put any logo on their sweater. Take a look into history a bit. Rangers - original 6 teams. End of story. You don't mess with 100 yr. old tradition for the sake of looking cooler.

Sep 2 · 10:31 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterbwayblueshirt

Why do teams want to write their name on the jersey? If it's part of the logo, that's fine. But if all you want to put is text, what makes your jersey so special?

I like the color on Colorado's third, but I would prefer a logo rather than just the name written diagonally or across it or in any way, shape or form.

As I write this, Minnesota revealed their 3rd and other than the beautiful green color, the jersey sucks in my book.

i like the blue and all but i think they should have gone with the bigfoot logo on the from instead of the plain colorado lettering, i wasn't a huge fan of the first third jersey however this is a step up, but i have thought the bigfoot would look good on a third since before the original third jersey even came out

Blue and burgundy don't match together! There is no harmony!

Oct 24 · 1:06 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMindKey

I never noticed that this concept had "AVALANCHE" on the back of the collar too...
