Flames Leak 30th Logo?

Got some Calgary Flames news for you this afternoon on a couple of topics — their 30th anniversary and their brand new third jersey.

Icethetics reader Cody has sent in information on this first subject. According to Sportsnet.ca, the Flames aren't supposed to unveil their new 30th anniversary logo until September. However, it seems to have appeared briefly on the team's web site on Tuesday. An intentional effort to net a free but unsuspecting focus group or a simple mistake?

It is rumoured that the Calgary Flames will wear a new logo on occasion this year to commemorate its 30th NHL season.

The logo was expected to be officially unveiled in September, but it appeared on the team's web site on Tuesday. It is unknown for what games the new logo will appear.

Flames' 30th anniversary logo? The logo in question is apparently what you see here to the right.

There's no way to know at this point if this will be the 30th anniversary logo or if it's even a final version. If it is, I think it's safe to say the Oilers beat them on 30th logos — by a mile.

That's really all I have on that. This logo has been making its way around Flames fan sites and message boards since Tuesday but no one seems to have any definitive information.

Personally, I'm curious about that last line in the Sportsnet story. "It is unknown for what games the new logo will appear." If it's an anniversary logo, it should simply be a patch on the uniform for the whole season. I certainly hope there's no plan to put this on a third jersey.

Which brings me to the third jersey news. Last September, I posted this story — which appeared in the Calgary Sun. Basically, it was Flames president Ken King talking about the team's third jersey plans. King all but confirmed the new sweater to be black with a new crest — not the Flaming C — and that it would debut for the 2009-10 season. At the time he said it was 95% complete.

I'm now hearing from a couple of sources that this design is being replaced in favor of a retro look from the team's early days (no word if the Atlanta Flames logo will make a reappearance). It's possible the team is working on a white sweater devoid of any black. Those were the days.

I'll continue to follow these stories but keep in mind that we're less than a month away from getting some official news — which I always prefer anyway. Meantime, Calgary fans, were you wary of another black jersey? Excited about a vintage look? What about this 30th anniversary logo?

If that is their 30th anniversary logo that is ridiculous i hope that is not the final version because if it is that looks completely unprofessional and halfassed.

That's a jersey badge to match a similar one they had in for their 25th. It's not a logo.

Come on, this is not a logo. This will be a crest that will be on the jersey all year.

The idiots at Sportsnet actually thought this would be a logo? Fire them.

personally i think it looks nice

I would love to see a throw-back alternate. I'm a big fan of the black accents in the current uniforms; I think it gives the jerseys a much sharper, contemporary look. I don't like the thought of another unoriginal, boring black-base alternate, though. Of course, I'm of the opinion that the Flames' reds are the best looking uniforms in the league, so I'd be just as happy if they forgot about an alternate altogether. If we're set on an alternate, we could do much worse than to jump on the vintage bandwagon.

a couple of things:

1.a number of my design buddies agreed that a skyline logo would be cool for a 3rd calgary jersey. personally, i kinda like the graffiti look but i can't imagine it getting greenlit by ken king et al. have you SEEN the recent logo for the abbotsford heat ??!?! sleek and masculine is in, according to the designers chez les flambés, apparently,...

2. the rbk/nhl store in nyc told me recently that (according to their nhl contact) there would be a vintage re-release this year and not an alternate (aka: 3rd) jersey. i'm not sure this would apply.

3. a buddy of mine who works with the flames saw the original concept last year which was reportedly crimson and apparently didn't look retro or vintage at all. if they're scrapping that for a re-release then who knows ?

4. the flames have spent a lot of years/time/money marketing "the C of red" and the organization probably rubs their greedy hands together when they see the crowd in the sutterdome all donned in red (home) flaming C jerseys. an alternate in any colour outside the red/crimson/orange family would be an outrage.

Though the '30' is calligraphic, the '0' seems to imply a candle flame.

As a lifelong Flames fan, I hope this isn't the patch! I remember the 10th anniversay patch--timeless. The 25th one...not so much.

If they do go retro--great. Will look nice when playing against the Edmonton third jersey. However I would like to see what they discarded. I am very curious about what could have been.

I'm a fan of the flames since the nordiques departed. I would love the third jersey to be in the water of the jjersey they wore in the cup finals of 89, no black, red yellow white with the white flaming C

It will be an ok patch i think , not sure where they'll adorn it on the current sweaters though, it's already all flagged up :)

I hope they wear the 1980s flames... I think they look horrible in black. They are a walking 2000's sports cliche', lets add black for the sake of adding black!

This anniversary logo has been on the top right corner of the Flames new website above Kippers head since they launched it like 3 weeks ago.

Aug 20 · 1:33 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterErik

I can confirm that this logo did appear on the Flames website. I saw it several times over two or three days.

I've been saying for a LONG time that the original red or white jerseys would be the best alternate look possible (the ones they won the cup in). No need for black, they're a red team (it's not the "sea of black" in the playoffs for a good reason), and the league is already too black-happy. There's also not too much one can do to top the flaming C logo as an identity for that team.

So I say keep the red and keep the C. I'd prefer the white throwback because...

1) could be worn against the Oilers retro or Canucks pseduo-retro.

2) Would be worn more on the road, and the home jersey is already a great look for the team, it should have as many appearances as possible. (There's a reason since the re-introduction of the red jersey in 2003 it's been worn for every single home game, by far the NHL's longest streak).

3) The white was the home back then, and I've always throught wearing what was a road jersey as a home throwback (EG: Oilers) is a bit odd if you think about it.

4) The league needs more light colored third jerseys (Thank you Toronto!)

Chris, this is not a leaked logo. It's not a even a logo that was taken off the website. It has been there for almost a month above Kipper's head, and hasn't been taken down once. This is not a secret logo. Get the facts straight.

Aug 20 · 4:58 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSilver

In fact, go to the Flames website right now! It's STILL THERE

Aug 20 · 5:00 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSilver

Easy there, Silver. It's not there anymore. You probably just have an old version of the background image in your browser. Clear your cache and you'll see. And anyway, what difference does it really make? I'm merely reporting on a story from Sportsnet. You can simply ignore the post (or the entire site) if you don't like the content. Thanks!

Aug 20 · 5:10 PM PDT | Registered CommenterChris

WHY in the world do you mess with the flaming C? Its one of the best logos in sports. As a fan going back to the days here in Atlanta, I was disappointed when they turned the crest black on the red jersey instead of white and having the black as an accent - but at least they got smart and trashed the silly horse head!

Aug 20 · 5:30 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterGlovesave29

Apparently I did have an old version of the background image in my browser. I apologize. However, I never said I do not enjoy the content of this site, nor did I say this "makes a difference." Please do not put words in my mouth like that. I have been an avid reader since the early NHLToL days, and have recommended the site to all of my friends. Sp please, even if you feel disrespected by me, don't disrespect me.

BTW, I'm not the only one who made that mistake for the record. Erik did as well.

Aug 20 · 6:11 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSilver

I do not understand why, if it is real, the patch would not have a silhouette of the Saddledome on it.

Aug 20 · 6:53 PM PDT | Unregistered Commentermwchad

Arn't the Canucks coming up on thier 40th any news on that?

Aug 20 · 10:13 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterCarnell

The 30th anniversary patch does need a redo if that is in fact it. As for the third situation I'm tired of the retro thing. The Flames jersey improved immensely when they added the black. Except for those years in between 93 and 99 when they had the weird strip pattern. If you ask me ( which from what I see many wouldn't ) the old retro jersey's were missing something until the black came into the color scheme. I was looking forward to a new look with a new logo. Change is good. If it fails then go to the retro. You don't know until you try!

Aug 20 · 10:51 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterWoody

If that's the Flames' 30th anniversary logo, the Oilers win by much more than a mile... if the crests were racing the Indy 500, the Oilers would win before the Flames complete their first lap.

And how did we all miss it in that post a month ago? We should all be ashamed of ourselves.

Aug 20 · 11:11 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterKevin Y

Mixed bag for Calgary. A retro jersey would be cool, but that 30th logo is bad. It looks like something you'd see from an NBA Street game or something.

Aug 20 · 11:47 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJason

The Flames website is my homepage and the logo has been on the website since the day icethetics broke the story. This blog is actually what pointed it out to me in the first place. I'd like to say its been over a month. It wasn't until sportsnet so called "broke" the story that it was removed. How ridiculous that a media outlet that covers the tteam ook so long to notice it. Something cant be leaked when its been posted for such a long time. It was open and public.

That patch design is a joke. Poorly designed. What's with the graffiti font?

Aug 21 · 9:30 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJerk Store

That logo looks like the graffiti you see on a passing train....

Aug 21 · 12:32 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterNick

I've been hoping for a retro look to make a comeback for quite some time now. I know that there are many people that also think that there is far too much black in NHL jerseys. Personally, I was disappointed when the new RBK Edge jerseys weren't retro in nature. if I were in charge of marketing and design for the team, I would have abolished the black long ago in favor of the red, white, and yellow. That being said, I think the Flames pull off the black very well.

Aug 21 · 2:10 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterCopelin

Yep....that's exactly where I saw the logo on their website....

Aug 23 · 9:31 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSkizzyMcB

I really hope they realize soon that this would be their 31st year. you count the first year as year 1. so so 1980 is year 1 and 2010 is year 31. way to go flames and canada. counting is clearly not your strong suit
