Third Thursday
Quick note picked up from PuckDrawn via Twitter this morning.
The Atlanta Thrashers' web guy, Ben Wright, said yesterday that the team will be wearing the red third jersey exclusively for home games on Thursdays this season. Third Jersey Thursday, as he points out.
BenThrashers Thrashers red third jerseys will be worn exclusively on Thursdays this season. Third- Thursday. Nice and easy to remember, right?
He followed that up this morning with a reminder.
BenThrashers In case you missed it yesterday, the Thrashers will wear their red third jerseys exclusively for Thursday home games.
So mark your calendars — or not. I think the irony here is that this is on the of third jerseys people care about the least. In fact, it was recently the butt of a joke here on Icethetics.
All the comments about how funny it would be if Thursday home games were rare this season got me thinking. I took a look at the Thrashers' season and I now have a full third jersey schedule for you. Ben said the third will be "exclusive" to Thursday home games. I'm assuming that also means "every" Thursday home game.
If so, here are the 12 games in which Atlanta will don those maroon duds this coming season. Fans, mark your calendars.
- October 22 - vs Capitals
- October 29 - vs Capitals
- November 5 - vs Blue Jackets
- November 19 - vs Bruins
- December 3 - vs Islanders
- December 17 - vs Stars
- January 7 - vs Rangers
- January 14 - vs Sabres
- January 21 - vs Hurricanes
- March 4 - vs Islanders
- March 18 - vs Senators
- March 25 - vs Maple Leafs
The Capitals will be subject to it twice in back-to-back Thursdays in the early part of the season. The Thrashers will save it for Ontario only as the season winds down. Like the Caps, the Isles will also be treated to the red third jersey twice before the season's out.
If any other teams announce third jersey schedules, I'll be sure to post them for you.

If I was that guy, I wouldn't have bothered. I don't think the fans care whether they get to see that horrible jersey or not!
I'd like to know one thing, why? I fully understand the Predator's idea to wear thrid jerseys on Saturdays because of higher attendance and increased visibility, but Thursday just seems like an odd choice.
I actually kind of like it .. I mean, I don't LIKE it, but it's not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be.
i agree with tim, think about how many home games can one team have on a thursday, so really the horribly ugly jersey wont really se that much ice tim (thank God)
I live in Nashville, so I'm not intimately familiar with the Atlanta hockey market, but I did make it to a Thrashers-Pens game down there last season, and I was surprised at how many fans I saw wearing the third jersey. I know the general consensus around here is that it sucks (and I agree), but it seems to be fairly popular among Thrasher fans. So this might be a bigger deal than you guys are giving it credit for.
Like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
Good choice. Now it's on a night with little national TV coverage and lower attedance than prime weekend dates. If my third jersey sucked that much I'd want to hide it, too.
why does everyone hate this jersey? I think its one of the coolest jerseys in the NHL
The Falcons should be the ones in this jersey. Ugh.
I like them. They're very unique. At least they tried something different. 'Ahem San Jose, Boston, and so-on (black).
An awesome update to this would be if they didn't have any Thursday games.
@alex
People hate them because believe it or not, the Thrashers are a hockey team, not an NBA team.
At least the third doesn't look that bad as the ugly blue ones with Atlanta on the sleeve...
God, I feel sorry for the Capitals. October, they have to see this crap TWICE!!! Just when they're finally able to get it out of their heads, they're subject to it just a week later. As for the Islanders... I don't care so much about them since they suck, and their torture should be having to see it twice. Considering the Isles play twice in Atlanta this year, and they're both on Thursdays, they don't get to see Blue Land.
Personally, I just think of it of the Thrashers third as a much better version of every Stars jersey in their current set. The Stars jerseys are certainly the worst, which is terrible since their previous set (taken from the old All-Star game jerseys) were among the best.
Look, as a Thrashers fan, I feel that it is time to defend this a little. At first, I didn't like the jersey either, but when the full team wears it in the entire uniform, it is pretty cool. However, when you are walking around the arena and see a fan wearing it, it doesn't look as good. Its a different style from the traditional stuff that hockey fans are used to. I look forward to seeing these games on special occasions, but I will always be a fan of the baby blue jerseys.
