Winter Classic Windfall

If you've been following the comments in the previous post today, then by now you're aware of what I'm posting tonight. If you steer clear of the comments as I do, it's time to catch up on the big news of the day and it's all about the 2010 Winter Classic.

First, the Philadelphia Flyers officially unveiled their new jersey for the outdoor game.

Keeping in step with the previous four Winter Classic participants, the Flyers will don a classic look that harkens back to their earlier days. Unsurprisingly, it is simply a reversed version of the orange jersey introduced as an alternate last year. (It will become the new home sweater this season.)

Flyers players shoot at a wall of ice to reveal the jersey

Daniel Briere, Simon Gagne and Braydon Coburn were on hand today to reveal the new design by shooting pucks at a wall of ice that concealed it. The three Philadelphia skaters then modeled the sweaters for photos.

Briere, Gagne and Coburn model the Winter Classic threads

Interestingly, the biggest talker with this unveiling wasn't even the design itself — which had been rumored expected for months. From the comments and emails I read, many people could not get over the black nameplate on the back of the white sweater.

Notice the black nameplate on the white sweater...

Personally, I don't mind it. It fits well in context with the orange jersey (which features a white nameplate). It opens the door to making this the new road jersey in the near future. I know many of you are hoping for that. Maybe an orange nameplate would've been better, but black will certainly be more legible.

I recommend checking out the full photo gallery on the Flyers' web site.

The surprise of the day? The Boston Bruins third jersey was leaked online! And no, not at the hands of Icethetics. (Surprisingly.)

In fact, I'm actually not sure where this picture originated. But it clearly shows Tim Thomas wearing a yellow jersey the Bruins have never used before. (Much better than yesterday's poor excuse for a leaked image.)

Take a look.

Is Tim Thomas wearing the Bs' new Winter Classic sweater?

There's little doubt in my mind that this is the real thing — the Bs' brand new Winter Classic sweater. We'll get official word on that next Thursday when it is unveiled at the State of the Bruins event.

As far as the source of this image, the closest I could find was The Boston Sports Network blog. But I am not certain. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I certainly don't want to credit the wrong source.

Anyway, that wraps up today's big Winter Classic news. Just 110 days until the big event!

I like, I like. Of course it was expected. I guess this becomes the away jersey next season and the Third last season becomes the home jersey. Last year's home will take the Third Jersey spot.

Despite being what we expected, this is really sharp. In little details, I'd switch the colours on the collar so the orange is on the outside and the black is on the inside. Overall, the worse thing they did to this uni was the black name plate. It should have been orange or just plain white.

Overall 4 Out of 5.

Yellow Bruins uniforms are nice! (as is the lady). Boston is doing something right with every new jersey they make. Tip of the hat to their creative team!

Philly jersey is okay. I actually like their new Reebok jerseys but I can see how diehard fans like the retro. The black nameplate is out of place, as is the white nameplate on the orange. You can go retro but at least update it a bit. This isn't the 80's anymore.

Sep 11 · 6:18 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDandy

Wow, I totally called that. CHALK ONE UP FOR GLEN!!!!

Sep 11 · 6:42 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterGlen

That new yellow sweater ought to become their new road garb. That jersey is HOT (as is that chickie)

Sep 11 · 6:46 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterPhil

I love both sweaters. Glad to see the Bruins back in yellow. Actually, a black B on the yellow would work better and matching yellow helmets would look great with the sweaters.

Sep 11 · 6:53 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAndre

The white nameplate on the orange jersey was an afterthought in the 70's. The Flyers wore orange jersey with no names. Then, because a game was being televised nationally, the decided to add names. So, they took the names off of the white jerseys and sewed them onto the orange ones. So, the 2008 retro is a neat tribute to that. The black nameplate isn't in keeping with how the jersey looked in the 70's and for being designed as the reverse of the third nameplate, is just lame. Switch it to a white nameplate, black letters, and I'll pony up the cash...

Sep 11 · 6:53 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenter204A

Very nice jerseys for both sides, I like them a lot. Flyers will probably axe the black nameplate eventually (especially if they get enough fan feedback) so it's no big deal.

Sep 11 · 7:01 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterEvan

very nice on both sides. two very distinct jerseys. could do w.o the black name plate that everyone else has been biatching about as well. can't wait for Jan. 1 to roll around and see these teams on ice and in these awesome sweaters!

Sep 11 · 7:25 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterIceman

the black nameplate is a blatant attempt at something different... uncool to say the least. stick with a standard namebar for the whites and the orange can then keep the white namebar.

Sep 11 · 7:36 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterGrinch

whos that fine girl with tim thomas?

Sep 11 · 7:42 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterrobs

The Bruins jersey seems to be the one used from 1959 to 1965 but the stripes on it are a little bigger than the ones from back then. It's more similar to the yellow jersey they used for the 1958-59 season, but the end of the sleeves weren't black like the ones we see on this pic.

Sep 11 · 9:09 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterBob

Okay, from what I know, the Flyers never used a black namebar, even in the past. The white-on-orange namebar was used, yes, but on the white jerseys, the letters were black. Seems a little odd or even forced to me.

As for the Bruins, the poster above is right in that style or something similar was used from the 50's till 1967, but the big oddity is that B on the front. That B was used for only ONE season (1949) on a jersey which celebrated the Bruins' 25th Anniversary (the numbers 24 and 49 were seen on either side of the B itself, yellow numbers on the black spokes, not seen on this jersey of course), and notably, only on the WHITE jersey (the other jersey in 1949 was BLACK!). If they're going for authenticity, they missed by a mile, but it certainly is stylish. I'm a little disappointed that they didn't go for a modified version of the original 1924 Bruins jersey (brown and yellow, with the logo they borrowed for their current third... and yes, this yellow one kicks the daylights out of their current third and sends it home crying).

Either way, cool ideas for both, but the genuine "old school" feel is lost by forcing things that weren't there before (Flyers) or by playing cut-and-paste (Bruins) with older designs.

Putting hockey and it's cool jersey's aside for a minute..............................................
Who in God's name is that bombshell next to Thomas? Wow.

I agree with the posts that say the black nameplate seems forced. I mentioned that yesterday. The white nameplate fits perfectly cause that's how they wore it when t.v. forced the issue. It just looks way better on the orange version.

Dallas hits it on the head by mentioning Boston being all over the board when it comes to authenticity.
They took a little of this, mixed it with a little of that, ignoring the fact that the traditionalists would cry in disapproval. I just think that tweaking should be left for alternate shirts, and 'turn back the clock' events should be 100% in keeping with tradition.

NHL's twitter has been posting pictures of players doing interviews with Carrie Milbank (the girl with Thomas for those asking) for a few days now. I didn't see this one on twitter, though. Maybe someone working with the photos sent it out somewhere else too soon?

Sep 11 · 10:54 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJason

Is it possible for me to get one of those things next to Tim Thomas? I'll take 2 please.

Sep 11 · 11:16 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

Awesome...yellow is a terribly underused color. I can even deal with the black nameplate on the Flyers one.

Carrie Milbank needs to have my love child.

Sep 12 · 2:03 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterG-Man

Is it me, or if you look closely is that brown, not black, on the Bruins jersey? If so, awesome, and they should totally go with Brown helmets/gloves/pants. It will help darken the uniform, since they will be playing teams in white jerseys when they wear it.

Honestly though, I was hoping for them to scrap the Black third and replace it with this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/DaveCormz/wcbruinsuni1.png

I think the Flyers did a great job on the jersey. I've never been a big fan of yellow but I don't hate the Bruins jersey because it is a classic jersey. Bob mentioned it already, it does seem that they recreated the Bruins jerseys from the 60s according to this decorative clock: http://www.teamontop.com/all_images/NHLHorizClock-Bruins_detail.jpg it was the only thing i could find on their jersey history. And yes Carrie Milbank is nice as well.

Sep 12 · 6:10 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterFranco

That Boston jersey is GODLY. How freaking AWESOME.

That should be the third jersey (with the regular spoked B) but they couldn't have done much better. I and most Boston fans LOVE this jersey.

I'd pay 500 bucks for on of those.

Its definitely New, it is an RBK EDGE jersey notice the triangle in the neck.

I can't believe I am saying this but I really like the black name plate lol... Although if I was going to have a problem with the plate it would be because I do not think the Flyers have ever used a black name plate so it might be historically incorrect. LOVE the Boston yellows as well! They look pretty much exactly like the ones from the 50's- 60's... The B looks off though, it looks a little more obscure than the ones on those jerseys.

Sep 12 · 10:37 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJimbo

Dave, you're not going crazy, the "B" crest looks brown to me too. Could just be the lighting though. In anycase, we'll find out for sure in at least a week if not sooner. Either way, it look's good.

Sep 12 · 11:22 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterdownRupLYB

Of the two, the Boston one is by far the best. The Flyers haven't made enough changes to their jersey style to do anything interesting. Boston, like Chicago and Detroit have lots of history to draw from. Looking at another site that has 99% of the NHL jersey history I was able to find out the "B" is taken from the 1948-49 season, the stripe layout is taken from the 1958-59 season. All in all a good combo - the best of the two and the one I'll get this year.

Sep 12 · 12:32 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterEd

If you look closely, the spokes around the B look brown, while the jersey stripes look black.
Could that be?
And if you look closely again....... you'll see why Miss Milbank really deserves a blog all to her own!
Heavens.

Sep 12 · 12:56 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterbwayblueshirt

ya, thats brown for sure on the boston jersey, i think it looks nice, almost half as good as carrie milbank there. flyers one is fine.

NASHVILLE 3rd HAS BEEN REVEALED at a Taylor Swift concert.

Unfortunately so far the pics are not great.

"Taylor Swift debuts Preds 3rd jersey!
By
Jeremy K. Gover

The rumors were true: Taylor Swift, during her show at The Sommet Center tonight, debuted the Nashville Predators 3rd jersey.

Swift, who’s been featured in Predators TV spots, took the stage during the encore and showed off – and advertised – to the 18,000 strong inside the building.

MORE TO COME –"

The shade of orange the Flyers chose is way too bright. Almost feminine. Why would they go away from the traditional darker burnt ornage?

Sep 12 · 10:10 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterTimaa

Bright colors being seen as "feminine" is why we get the tired "tough" navy blue / black horrors.

Sep 13 · 1:10 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterG-Man

Seems Craegus beat Chris to a scoop. Chris yer asleep! Wakey wakey!

The new Nashville 3rd...gotta say...the best jersey the franchise has ever had. New home jersey next year guaranteed.

Sep 13 · 4:39 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDave Delisle

I think the main reason that the black nameplate is used is for visibility purposes. I must imagine that they tested an orange nameplate and it may have been to hard to read the names on.

Overall, I don't mind if team tweak retro sweaters for the sake of visibility or updating them for TV purposes (adding names/numbers to sweaters from the original 6 days) That being said, I hope that Boston uses an authentic classic sweater and makes this yellow one their new alternate

Sep 13 · 3:37 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterP-Rus

Sep 14 · 2:46 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterNewYorqker

Wait... you said Tim Thomas is in one of the pictures? Which one. All there was is a photo of the Flyers doing something and Carrie Millbank....

Sep 14 · 8:21 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMIke L

Am I the only one who thinks that something besides a tone-on-tone namebar is a nice change? Even if it is black on white?

Sep 14 · 8:57 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterCarolyn J.

Both teams made shit up. The Flyers made up the existence of a black nameplate to match the white ones on the oranges that only existed because they were the same ones that came off the whites. The Bruins mashed up several logos and stuck it on a random yellow jersey. The logo on the sweater never existed, and the logo with the funk B was never on a colored sweater at all- it only appeared for one year on a white.

Both teams fail. Both could have easily done something accurate and cool, and both farked it up royally.

Sep 14 · 1:07 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJeff P

Am I the only one that finds all this backlash about the "non-historically accurate-ness" of these jerseys a little uncalled for (especially the Bruins)? Just because a franchise has several looks to choose from doesn't mean they are restricted to those looks. And who said that the Winter Classic jerseys have to be exact replicas of old jerseys anyway? It just so happens that these organizations choose to go back to their roots and create jerseys that look similar to or draw heavily from the past. So what if they combined the striping from this year and the crest from that year with the jersey color from another? This way, instead of giving a nod to one specific year, the organization can show tribute to all of their history.

Sep 14 · 4:37 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterOgre39666

and so what if they "made shit up". At some point all the things everyone is saying these team should have done were "made up" as well...

Sep 14 · 4:42 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterOgre39666

Easy cowboy. I think the reason people (traditionalists) are giving lots of backlash is for the reason I stated before. Hockey has gone WAY overboard in tweeking it's game to suit any newcomers who are willing to pick up the sports' ratings. They've changed SO much of this 100 yr old sport already. RBK, in my opinion, killed the jersey when they made the form fitting, diaper hem ,piping all over the place, no hem stripes shirt! NHL finally comes up with a great idea in the Winter Classic, and the purists FINALLY get to see the throwback jerseys in their original form. (Penguins, Sabres)
Can't we at least have that??? Except for a few teams, hockey has messed with home & away jerseys, and the alternates. Suddenly, the teams started using the alternates as their 'throwback'.
So why must we now tweak the WC jerseys too? When is enough enough?

I've said it a million times........ All you gotta do is see how correct and beautiful it works in Baseball, football and even basketball. None of them are tweaked! Did anyone happen to see how awesome all 4 teams looked on MNF yesterday? Now THAT'S the way to celebrate a teams past. Hands down.

Sep 15 · 4:33 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterbwayblueshirt

My previous post was not meant to be mean spirited or rant-ish, so I apologize if it was taken as such.
I agree that the football teams that took part looked great in the AFL throwbacks. The only issue I have with the comparison is that the NFL was giving a specific nod to their absorption of the AFL by having former AFL member teams wearing their uniforms from that time period. Where this differs with the Winter Classic is that the WC is not a throwback night or a NHL wide turn-back-the-clock event; it’s an outdoor game. Yes, I loved the Sabres, Pens, and Blackhawks wearing pretty much exact replicas of their old jerseys (Detroit’s was so-so in my opinion, not that they had a lot of old looks to choose from) but when you have a team like Boston who has a wealth of former looks to choose from, I don’t see the harm in creating a "conglomerate" type jersey that draws from multiple points in the teams history. And I’m not even taking into consideration the RBK-ification here; I'm talking solely about the reaction towards not using an exact replica of an old jersey, that's all.

Sep 15 · 11:38 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterOgre39666

Point taken. But I think you see the 'traditionalists' viewside of this. There has to be a way that between 3 or 4 jerseys for A TEAM....... we can at least get one to view on tv, or buy to wear, that is totally replicating the teams past era/year.

Sep 16 · 11:15 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterbwayblueshirt

i like both jerseys, even if they aren't faithful reproductions of classic jerseys.

i really like the boston jersey, which is a knockoff of their home jersey from 1955 to 1967:

Sep 16 · 3:43 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterfamar

And now we know it's official. And that the darker portions are brown, not black as the 58-59 jersey on which the design is based.

Sep 17 · 5:09 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterkyojikasshu

I vote to make both vintage jerseys their full time ones. Never enjoyed Philly in black. Orange is their color. It BELONGS to them (not to say no one else can use it), but I think we can all agree orange is a color you associate in the NHL with Philadelphia.

Sep 18 · 6:18 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterHabitant

Like the Bruins, especially the Brown. The logo is nice and I can understand why management or whoever decided to drop the anniversary years from the design. It wouldn't make sense and would raise needless questions. The Flyers one is kinda meh to me, but I have no emotional investment in it either.

Now I have to run make a deposit in the bank, just wish it was the Milbank...

Wow! The Bruins jersey really looks GREAT next to a hot chick. Come to think of it, all 30 NHL teams should unveil new jerseys with perfect 10s in the background.

Wait, the girls should be wearing the jerseys! How can you go wrong? Even the 1997 Penguins threads would look killer. :D

Whoever that is, she ain't his wife - no ring!
