Jackets Unveil 3rd Jersey

The Columbus Blue Jackets unveiled the second alternate jersey in team history tonight at a special fan-centric event, while the players were away at a road game.

Now, normally I'd go into all the details about the unveiling and post lots of pictures with different angles of the new sweater. But instead, since I'm unable to write up a full blog post right now, I'll supply you with a link to the Jackets' website.

And if it's commentary you're hoping for, I'll say this: I'm a fan. I like them because they're both familiar and different at once. We can all give Columbus a hard time for being yet another team to go with the two-tone blue palette, but I'm not going to go that route. In fact, their twist on the recent trend is actually kind of refreshing.

We get our first look at it on the ice on Friday along with the Anaheim Ducks' new third jersey. Sorry again for the minimal content lately. Just another couple of weeks and I'll get everything back to the way it was.

I really like the job .... but like someone else write it before ....
It would have been better and give some life to the jersey with a little red line here and there !

Its a 9/10

At first glance I loved the jerseys, then I realised they are just the Panthers third jersey with minimal changes.

Nov 25 · 1:09 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterGoodsie

@KZED "My only thing is I'd like to have seen the body being grey and the stripes 2 different blues."

Why in the world would it make sense for the BLUE JACKETS to wear confederate grey jerseys?

My 2 complaints about this jersey is the lack of the current logo on the shoulder(however that would mess up the "military uniform" look) and the fact they are still using the original cartoonish font on the name plate.
The striping pattern I feel looks good because it does have the feel of a military officer uniform. If were gonna add red to it the only place it would have worked and still held the feel is the "ribbon"

It doesn't look bad at all, but it has no imagination to it. Circle logos and vintage should probably be reserved for vintage/throwback jerseys.

Nov 25 · 2:41 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterrhas2916

I like the crest logo on the jersey, but really, the jersey overall doesn't appeal to me. I'm just not for having light blue on your third jersey when it's not apart of you regular color scheme. I didn't care for the Panthers doing it, and don't care for the Blue Jackets doing it. Hopefully, next year no teams do this. Still like the crest though. I know the circular crests are done a lot, but I always found to be professional looking, so they've never bothered me. Not a great jersey though.

wow another jersey that looks like the pens and the panthers third jersey. so unoriginal and very bland. very disappointed. they could of done so much more with the canon idea. HORRIBLE!

Nov 25 · 5:17 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterHollywood

i think i'm in love

Nov 25 · 5:47 PM PST | Unregistered Commentermark

Those numbers are hideous.

Nov 25 · 6:50 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterbreaktheice

I had to look twice at the picture and the blog post title to be sure that it was NOT a new "retro" themed Penguins jersey! Why can't teams somehow both retain the integrity of their own original color scheme while at the same time coming up with a classic-looking alternate? I'm just saying where's at least a bit of red trim?

Nov 25 · 8:22 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterwestcoast Dave

Change the teal to red, make the logo just the cannon, and bleach the white and you have a winner.

Until then, 3/5

Nov 25 · 9:09 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterGlen

SO PISSED about these. They could have done something way cooler with that logo. Too much white. Where the hell is the red?! Why the unnecessary light shade of blue?

Good logo, good font. Scrap everything else!

Nov 26 · 12:31 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterChris D

In regards of their tradition and looking to the uniforms during the civil war on colors for that 3rd the Blue Jackets did just hit the nail on the head. For me perfect at all.

Nov 26 · 2:29 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterBooze

don't rip on the Jackets, rip on the Panthers for their FAIL.

Nov 26 · 7:52 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterroccot

I think it god awful. It looks exactly like the Panthers third or, as someone else pointed out, it kinda looks like pittsburgh third. I am very disapointed as the Blue Jackets have sick Home and Away Jersey. I would have hoped for a red jersey. With blue shorts, it would have mixed things around nicely. Two thumbs way down as it has 0 originality and 0 pezzaz.

Nov 26 · 10:33 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterEmanuel

Before I saw the picture I took a guess. Here's what I predicted:
Standard dark blue? yep. Frustrating circular logo complete with the team name so that no one will forget who they cheer for? yep. (albeit with a decent looking cannon...) Vintage white? yep.

Seems like it's got the marks of every single new third jersey these days.
I do like the epic nature of the little video on the website. My only hope is that they transform a decade of mediocrity into a tradition of victory, which they haven't done just yet, but I'm crossing my fingers this year.

Nov 26 · 11:06 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterJD

The new cannon logo looks way too much like a piece of generic clip art. It really could have been more dynamic and exciting. It's a cannon. What does it do? It shoots stuff! How about showing it shooting a puck out of the barrel in a cloud of smoke?

And where's the red? Once more Reebok decides to strip away the secondary color from a team's set for their new alt. Enlighten me, is there some sort of marketing survey that says this will drive sales through the roof? Otherwise, I guess I don't get it.

Freeing the cannon from the now ubiquitous circle would free it up to have been made larger, allowing for something with more detail and more colors - like red!

Not a great fan of the number font either. I would have stuck with the copperplate from the home and roads.

Nov 26 · 11:51 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterspyboy1

Has anyone notice they are the exact same design as the Sharks?

Nov 26 · 12:31 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterAndy

I like the classic look, although it does look like the generic 3rd with the color scheme and cicle logo. But i like the vintage white, gray and the twist with steel blue instead of baby blue. I also like the use of numbers and letters in the logo and jersey. Overall grade- B

Nov 26 · 1:54 PM PST | Unregistered Commenteri am a ranger

Can we just get rid of RBK all together, bring back the CCM Box Cut jerseys. I guess Blue is the new Black(every other team in the '90s HAD TO HAVE a Black jersey...wtf!!) and why must all the 3rds have ties or a circle logo??

Nov 26 · 2:19 PM PST | Unregistered Commenter91Pens92

Don't get me wrong, but is this a work of some player's kid? Really? CBJ? Third jersey? You gotta be kidding me... This is ridiculous crap,I'd rather go with new Ducks jersey than this...

Nov 26 · 3:42 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterArthur

Looking at them in action against the Wings, they looked awful. I'm now fully convinced "vintage white" has absolutely NO PLACE on a hockey rink. The contrast against the Red Wings' white jerseys - and even the ice surface - was startling, to say the least.

Memo to Reebok: Quit trying to make jerseys that look like they haven't been washed in 50 years!

Just Stop The Madness. For. The. Love. Of. Gordie.

Nov 26 · 7:25 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterkyojikasshu

What twist? They look exactly like every other double-blue jersey.

Every time a new 3rd jersey is unveiled I grow happier that the Wings are committed to steering clear of that BS altogether.

Nov 27 · 1:02 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterCorbeauNoir

Not bad. I firmly believe that if the blue third/vintage jersey trend wasn't so big right now that a lot more of you would like these. I do agree how ever, that the lighter blue should have been red. As far as the cannon goes, I like it. Some one stated before me that the cannon should have been shooting a puck out of it. Seriously? This are pro athletes, getting away from the cartoon aspect is a good thing.

Nov 27 · 2:28 PM PST | Unregistered Commentereaef

Y'know, initially I was extremely disappointed. I thought some nice grey would make its way onto the jersey, but it came out looking like a knock-off Pens 3rd. After seeing them on TV though, I like how 'yellowed' the white looks. It gives it a much more vintage feel than the picture on this article.

Still was hoping for some blue & grey though.

Nov 27 · 2:54 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterjakfrost

oh look, its the Flori-Bus-Burgh Pen-Panther-Jackets!!!

very nice jersey (which i want to buy), but........enough with the blue already!

Nov 27 · 2:54 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJerseyman

I agree with 91Pens92 that we need to get rid of RBK alltogether. Those jerseys suck and are uncomfortable to wear... I'm so tired of the coat tails and the slim arms. Those RBK Edge jerseys remind me of every car in NASCAR that now must have tons of zig zags all over them, ironically enough, all designed by the same guy I think (Sam Bass)... Not too sure about the Cannon logo, but I like the stripes. At least it looks like a hockey jersey, not a race car (Ducks)... I hate all those marketing fads... Watching hockey this year, I can't believe how many of those uniforms are ridiculously ugly, including 2 teams with the exact same pattern (Senators and Penguins). I guess RBK (And Gary Bettman)'s dream was to have identical patterns for every team with only the colous changing..... Duhhh... When they finally kick Bettman out of hockey, I hope they put RBK in the same bus out of town!

Nov 27 · 11:21 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterSupersyl

I feel the blue sweaters and the circle logos are a bit overplayed. See: Minnesota, St Louis, Pittsburgh, and Florida. However I like those sweaters, and I do like these sweaters. When the Blue Jackets became a team in 2000, I thought: what the heck is a blue jacket. I later learned it was a Civil War reference. I think this sweater makes it clear of that reference.

Nov 28 · 2:07 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDeep

incredibly bland , no color, just the same old thing done before , does the NHL have some restriction on actually using any color other than blue and black

Nov 28 · 2:33 PM PST | Unregistered Commentertoadman

I Like the jersey, as a wings fan It is nice to see a team other than minnesota use vintage white. a step above the regular jerseys in my opinion, those have too much going on. Way to go for keeping it simple. Plus it was nice to actually be able to read names and numbers of the opposition for once when the camera was not on a closeup.

Nov 28 · 7:53 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterCount of Monte Kristo

Love the colors and patterns, but something about the crest just looks bad to me. Not the logo necessarily, more the solid circle.

It's a good jersey from a distance, though it feels more like a Tampa Bay Lightning jersey than a Jackets jersey.

Nov 29 · 10:56 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterInteger Man

I like the jersey but it lacks originality. Sort of the same old, same old. In the days of HD television these are going to look pretty plain. Color isn't a bad thing if done correctly.

Nov 29 · 2:35 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterPAUL

These are fantastic. I'm not a Colombus fan at all, and I really like these. This should be their uniform--it's actually respectable, unlike those hideous things they usually wear.

These get a solid A. Cool uniforms, brah.

Dec 1 · 11:12 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterHank

As a Jackets Fan, I Hate the 3rd sweaters.

This Is after getting over our new secondary mascot, It took a couple of days for that. just type Boomer in google to see this joke played on us.

After going on Icejerseys.com to see if it can stand to our current jerseys. It just look like a mess compared to them. the only good thing on them is the crest. Keep the Crest and give us the fan a better jersey that piece of crap.

Dec 1 · 6:39 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDeshawn

Everyone saying these have been done before, take a look at how popular the others have been (aside from Florida's which is a joke). Now consider that the team name is the BLUE Jackets, what did you expect them to use, red? The striping is very original, as is the ribbon style that the font is on in the logo vs an enclosed circle. Not a fan of the blocky font, but other than that, I don't see how CBJ could have done better. 8.5/10

Dec 2 · 12:57 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterNon-Idiot

The amount of whining about the color is hilarious. The color is "Union Blue"... you know, the color the Union soldiers wore during the Civil War... which is what inspired the name "Blue Jackets". If you want to complain about the use of blue, complain about the Pens and Panthers who have not had blue in their color pallet in recent history.

Dec 2 · 4:17 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJosh

Not a fan of these. Caught them in action against Buffalo last night and one thing I noticed (don't think this was mentioned yet) was that the white stripes on the socks appear to a different white than the 'vintage' white on the jersey and pant covers. Anyone else notice this? Is it a screwup (Reebok screwed up the NYI socks when they first released the 3rd jersey, current home, a few years ago)? Or worse, is it intentional?

Dec 4 · 8:50 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterLaw

I think the Penguins should get a cut from the sales of these jerseys since the Jackets copied the Pens's 3rd jersey to make this one. I can't wait to see which team starts to copy the Pen's new Winter Classic jersey.

Dec 7 · 12:11 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDan K from Pittsburgh

I really can't believe some of the negative emotions around here. If you judge this thing solely on aesthetics it's a winner. Hands down. The only thing you can say about it is that it isn't original. Well OK, but a lot of NHL uniforms are not original. There are only so many templates one can use and this team looks good in blue and it makes sense.

The teams that don't belong in blue and shouldnt have a round circle around their logo are the Panthers and Blues. The penguins are OK with their third jerseys but that fauxback of theirs should just go.

Dec 7 · 3:32 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterel

Has anyone noticed that since Anaheim and Columbus introduced their new sweaters (and have worn them on a couple of occasions already) that neither team has won in them?

Just an observation. That's all :)

Dec 7 · 10:48 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJason

First of all you people do realize they're named the Blue Jackets because Columbus produced the most Union uniforms during the Civil War right? And second have any of you people ever seen a Union military uniform? The blue for the jackets and hats was rather dark. Now I must agree the font for the numbers and names should have been a regular standard font like Boston and Detroits. Other than that I love the new threads, just hope Boomer the giant penis is not a permanent mascot change.

Dec 8 · 11:00 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterBrad H

I just randomly noticed something that people who are ripping the Jackets for using light/steel blue might be interested in:
In the ORIGINAL Columbus logo, the "bug" shoulder patch, both the piping on the bug's uniform AND his hat are steel blue.

Therefore, this is actually more of a RETURN to the two-tone blue that the Blue Jackets started with than an addition of a new color.

Dec 10 · 12:48 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDrew

I'm just curious as to why some guy said the Blues don't belong in blue. I don't know if it was a joke or the least sensible thing I've seen posted on icethetics. I'm also wondering how the same poster determined which teams should be allowed to have circular logos and which teams shouldn't. I don't get it.

As far as the jackets' thirds go, they're fine. I like classic looks. Weird font, and yeah, they're blue, but I wouldn't have expected any other color. It's the panthers that ruined this jersey for everybody.
