Official: OKC Barons Unveiled!
After weeks of knowing but not really knowing, now we know. The Edmonton Oilers' AHL affiliate is named the Oklahoma City Barons. And the logo is exactly as leaked.
The unveiling took place this afternoon at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City where Prodigal Hockey officially unveiled the name, logo and uniforms for the AHL's newest member.
Icethetics readers were not surprised by the logo, but likely disappointed by the uniforms. Instead of being bold and creative, the Barons will wear the same, poorly designed home and road uniforms their parent club debuted in 2007 with the introduction of the Age of Reebok (right).
Hockey logos and uniforms never seem to surprise me anymore. Everybody seems to go for the safe option, lest they leave anyone offended. But such is the nature of things, right?
You can check out more photos from today's press event via the Oilers' official website. If you want to become a Barons fan, here are some useful links.
- www.okcbarons.com (the official website)
- @OKCBaronsHockey (official Twitter account)
- @RealOKCBarons (Prodigal Hockey on Twitter)
- Barons Official Facebook page
That should cover all of your Barons needs. If you visit the official website, you can pre-order merchandise and throw in your two cents to help name the team mascot.
The next big name/logo unveiling will come by way of Greenville's new ECHL club, formerly known as the Johnstown Chiefs. That will take place on June 25. And unlike the Barons, they seem to be locked up pretty tight. Either that or no one really cares about that team.
I would also expect, at some point this summer, the announcement that the AHL's Lowell Devils are moving to Albany. That will likely bring with it a new logo as well. And in the meantime, it appears the Phoenix Coyotes may be safe in xenophobic Arizona. If anything changes there, I'll try to keep you apprised.

Stunningly hideous.
I'd say that regarding the uniforms, they went with the lazy option, and just didn't care. But then, this is also the city that gave us one of the blandest logos and uniform sets in the NBA.
The Barons' logo is okay, at least. But that's about all I can say that's positive.
Nice practice jerseys, when are they unveiling the real ones?
Why? Why would the Oilers subject its AHL club to these hideous uniforms when the vintage home blue is the primary color and design? What the heck is Patrick Laforge smoking? Laforge needs to stick with the business side of things because he has to clue how to design a proper uniform that respects the Edmonton Oilers history. I really thought Daryl Katz would have put in his 2 cents when he bought the club and demanded a return to the vintage look. So very disappointing. The Oilers are probably going to hold off on changing the uniforms until a new arena is constructed. Most NHL clubs are realizing that vintage is in and Reebok Edge-ified look is out, so why are the Oilers so oblivious to this fact. You guys are killing me with these ugly arse pajama uniforms.
HORRIBLE!!!! I am so happy to be a Hershey Bears fan so I don't have to worry about my team copying the colors and unis of the parent club. Bridgeport Sound tigers used to have the coolest colors/jerseys and now are a carbon copy of the islanders. Albany used to have the river rats (even when hooked up with new jersey) now it looks like they'll be the devils. It sucks to see OKC go down the same dumb road
Im no designer, but i dont see what the fuss is about the rbk vertical piping, i like it i think it adds a nice look and a shape to jersey
Lame.
Man I wish NHL/AHL teams would get rid of the stupid piping on the jerseys. The logo is alright I guess, but the jersey colours are gross.
Wow. Even shoulder logos can't save that jersey.
The Oilers Vintage Look is sheer garbage. these jerseys are godly compared to the retros and they're not even that great... dont roll back in time Katz... this team has been living the past for way too long.
I know I am in the minority, but I actually prefer the copper and navy look the oilers have. If i was designing them new I would go back to the striping patterns of the late 90s and pre reebok.
The RBK era continues to disappoint. That concept we saw the other day was SO much better.
they're not named the blazers, but it's close enough. it's strange having a team called the barons that's not from cleveland. the logo is sleek and does the trick. as far as the uniforms go, i think it's the pattern and piping that are the problems, not the colors. the oilers uni's they wore from 96 up until the rbk edge era were awesome because they had the classic pattern with the modern colors.
as far as AHL teams changing their colors to represent parent clubs, it's great that clubs like hershey, milwaukee, and the chicago wolves can keep a separate their identities from their parent clubs. but NHL owned ahl teams are less likely to do that. I remember talking to the Bridgeport brass a few years ago when they changed their colors to represent the islanders who had purchased the team. they said the reasoning goes beyond marketing because they can buy one set of socks, pants, and gloves for all the players in both leagues to save on cost.
i totally agree mollard, i think its time for a new jersey but just in the current colour scheme, its fantastic
I really like the logo, it reminds me of my childhood when I was a HUGE Houston Oilers fan. Unis are boring though.
I HATE the RBK Edge crap. Everything from the stupid piping, to the stupid Diaper effect (Det,Chi,Mtl,etc...), to the gray sweat stain on Sabres 3rd, to the wannabe gold (beige) that my Pens wear, to just how cheap they look(take a look at an old CCM replica, players name & numbers are tackle/twill sewn on. RBK Edge replica players name & numbers are ironed on with FAKE stitches to make it look sewn on....Bring back the CCM box cut look and return the jerseys to the classic look, the way a jersey is supposed to look
Hockey jerseys should NEVER have piping. When will Reebok give it up? A travesty once again/
I have no comment on the jerseys, but the fact that they are the BARONS isn't right. The nickname Barons belongs in Cleveland, and I'll be dammed if any other cities going to steal that!
The sound tigers personnel who claimed that they needed to change their colors for uniform purposes is full of it! The islanders have 0 orange on their pants/gloves outside of maybe the pants logo.
It also kills me that the springfield falcons have been stripped of their identity, and it seems that the charlotte checkers are on their way too... :-(
Teams can be unique even if they share pants/gloves/helmets with a parent club. Of course, being affiliated with tampa bay is a little bit different than being affiliated with vancouver.
