All The News is Black & Gold
The only news around the NHL these days centers around one Stanley Cup. So that combined with my need for a break from the computer this past week means this is the first new blog post in nine days. Sorry about that. To try and dig up something worth posting, I look to my inbox.
The OHL's priority draft was held April 30 and the Sarnia Sting gave a brand new jersey to the kid selected first overall, according to several readers.
Currently, the Sting wear a black jersey and a white one, each with that giant bee found in the primary logo. The jersey given to Alex Galchenyuk at the draft announcement was black but read SARNIA across the front arched above the No. 1, a la the Dallas Stars.
It's a terrible look. Logos belong on the front of hockey jerseys, not block letters. But what do I know about Canadian junior hockey anyway?
Many have surmised it's a third jersey which will first hit the ice next fall, though this article doesn't even mention it. In the meantime, if you've come across any information that would shed light on this subject, I'd be happy to update the Icethetics faithful.
But we've got more from another black and gold Canadian Hockey League team.
The WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings donned a special commemorative sweater for the opening game of the Memorial Cup on Friday.
The jerseys will now be auctioned off with proceeds going to the Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund, to support veterans and their families. Bidding is open through May 25.
The opening game jerseys were designed by the CHL in conjunction with the Brandon Wheat Kings in honour of the Canadian Army, specifically the men and women past, present, and future of CFB Shilo. CFB Shilo is Manitoba’s only army base and is located approximately 20 minutes from the Keystone Centre.
For the record, the Wheaties (as I guess they're called) suffered a 9-3 blowout at the hands of the OHL's Windsor Spitfires while wearing the jersey. They'll use their regular sweaters for the rest of the CHL tournament.
Thanks to those of you who sent in links on this topic.
Looks like we just cannot escape the black and gold tonight.
As host of the 2010 IIHF World Championships, Team Germany pulled out a special gold sweater to open the tournament May 7.
They defeated Team USA 2-1 before a record home crowd of almost 80,000 inside a frozen soccer stadium. The jersey is quite refreshing when compared with the black and whites they usually wear — and will continue to wear throughout the tourney.
Maybe the goal was to help the team keep its eye on the prize from the beginning — gold all the way! You can see more pictures of this jersey in action in the IIHF photo gallery. That website also has images of every participating team's jersey.
I haven't been keeping an eye on the Worlds, by the way. How's it all going? All I know is they were worried Steven Stamkos was going to be sidelined with a concussion.
Just one more item on the agenda and it's not black or gold. It's blue!
During this afternoon's NBC telecast of the Sharks-Blackhawks Game 1, PxP man Mike Emrick mentioned the name of Antti Niemi's team back in Finland — the Lahden Pelicans.
He then wondered aloud what those jerseys would've looked like. In case you were wondering too, that's a picture (right) of Niemi in his Pelicans garb.
That logo only looks the slightest bit ridiculous, right? No, let's not kid ourselves, it's full-on ridiculous. Pelicans, haha!
GO SHARKS!
All right, now the real reason I've been taking it easy with the website this week. If you don't see or hear from me after May 23, it's probably not because I'm dead. It's probably Super Mario Galaxy 2, which comes out in a week and could develop into a minor obsession.
I don't consider myself a "gamer" in the least, but when it comes to that little red-suited plumber, what can I say? I enjoyed the first game and have been looking forward to the sequel. Anybody else enjoy a little Mario action or are you guys just strictly hockey here?

That Wheat Kings jersey is awesome!!! Must add to collection.
I was watching the "Wheaties" game the other night, and my family and I all agreed you couldn't even make out the numbers on the back. It was a yellow number on a gold stripe. If they have black numbers, they'd look great. GO FLYERS!
The Sarnia jersey is a third as per this article.
What makes it worse is that the Sting used to have a great jersey set, including the third jersey at the top of this page
Also, that second 'third' jersey looks great too. Awful that the 'Edge' era did away with those great jerseys.
Hey Chris... Not a total gamer here too, but my son is a Mario freak (He's 7). When I bought him Super Mario Galaxy 1, I ended up playing just as much as him. I know I will be playing a lot of Part 2 also so I understand where you are coming from.
Anyways, keep up the good work on the site and I agree that logos (not wordmarks) should be on jerseys.
oh yeah, off Mario and on to the jerseys...
Sting jersey is a fail. Wheat Kings is kinda cool. Germany's is a pretty good looking jersey and the pelicans... really pelicans. Hopefully Niemi plays like a pelican so my Sharks can finally go (And Win fingers crossed) a cup.
GO SHARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Being of half German myself and being a Canucks fan, I LOVE the German gold jerseys. What makes these jerseys a lot nicer than the Canucks' V and skate home jerseys from the 80s is that they are more simple in design. The use of red trimming instead of orange and no gaudy V designs make this look a real classic. It's nice to see yellow-gold uniforms.
What if Mario wasn't so Super?
History will be made.
I'm not a big fan of Mario, but I Go Crazy for the rabbids when I play it.
No sweat Chris, i'm sure i'll be playing SMG2 too for a while.
I don't think the new Sarnia sweater is horrible, it just reeks of Reebok template. The font and design is identical to Dallas. Boring!
The Wheat Kings jersey is a nice twist of Chicagos WC jersey and Chris, team USA lost also against Denmark and Finland.
Don't like the German gold jersey. Their Olympic uniforms were pretty nice though. No I don't like any of the Canucks uniforms with yellow. Sweep them under the rug and forget about em.
In Pittsburgh, we've had Super Mario since 1984.
Am I the only one here who thinks that bee is so ridiculous-looking, I'll take the text jersey every time?
Whatever happened to simple logo designs, rather than comic-book covers with hockey paraphernalia?
Blowout or not, the Wheat Kings logo (well, I suppose not Wheat Kings, but the logo on their jersey) is one of the best I've ever seen. You're going to need to design some sort of competition that'll allow us to award that the best logo of... something honour, because it definitely deserves it.
As for the World Championship, the US are in the (still nigh impossible) position to potentially be relegated (wow, that word never gets used in regards to North American sports...) to the Division I championships next year... though for that to happen, France and Italy have to win both their games and the US and Kazakhstan would have to lose, so... probably not possible, but then again, who would have foreseen the US playing in the relegation round instead of the medal round?
I'm going to have to fight hard to get one of those Wheat Kings jerseys, but it'll be a welcome addition to my collection! They're using Brayden Schenn's in the Hockey Hall of Fame display here until the end of the week, then it will return to the auction pile. The logo on the front is that of the Canadian Army, as Brandon has CFB Shilo just out of town, as well as a rich military history. I agree, they should have continued to emulate the Blackhawk's' Third jersey and used BLACK numbers, but that's the only flaw on a gorgeous sweater. Wish me luck getting one!
I haven't played any of the recent Super Mario games because I don't have a Wii. But all the others kick ass, so I assume this one would as well.
to be completely honest i REALLY like those sarnia/dallas jerseys. dont know why but it looks very sharp
wow love those wheaties jerseys!!
No love for the Pelicans? PELI means GAME in Finnish. The name and organisation are actually pretty new when compared to other Finnish teams. The logo is very cartoonish I have to admit
The team is just Pelicans btw. Lahden means Lahti's/of Lahti. They come from the city of Lahti.
