Avery Leaks Rangers Third

Rangers third revealedNew York Rangers forward Sean Avery has taken it upon himself to give us a sneak peek at his team's new third jersey.

This image was posted today on Avery's website. Looks like a pre-release photo shoot with the new alternate sweater — obviously.

Having gotten an early look at it myself, I can say that this is in fact the extra uniform the Rangers will have on hand for the 2010-11 season. You can see a patch there on the right shoulder. It's most likely the 85th anniversary logo.

I'm not sure when the team plans to hold an official unveiling for the third. They may just wait until November, like Anaheim. Or they may do it sooner. Either way, you've already gotten a chance to see it for yourself.

I'm a big fan of the color scheme, but it's no secret that personally, I would've rather seen them go with with the Lady Liberty logo from the mid-90s. What do you guys think? Hit or miss?

I'm with Jeff C. on this. I thought the point of a third jersey was to be different. What's the deal with all of these teams with 2 jerseys the same color? If the rumors are true, and the Ducks' new third is black, the LA area now features 2 teams with FOUR black jerseys combined! That's a lot of black. Wasted opportunites to be creative.

It is just okay.
Agree with Kevin, et. al.- too similar to the current jersey.
They should have never retired the Lady Liberty jersey, a real fine third jersey

I always thought the "Liberty" jersey was far too radical of a change from the original jersey. This jersey uses a more traditional approach. I would have liked to have seen the Rangers written in varsity style accross the chest. The varsity lettering was used during the 40's.

@ RICH

The Rangers will NEVER again put their shield crest on the front of a jersey. After the farce that Ferguson brought in in the 70's, the reaction was so much hate that it would be suicide to bring anything similar back. Plus, it just looked plain terrible.

Go look it up at nhluniforms.com, Rangers 76-77.

Yeah, you're right Homer -- boring. It needs gradients, flames, cheetah skin, metallic stripes, neon skulls, and uh..., OH pink polka dots.

Most of your are missing the point of this jersey. It's to pay homage and show respect to their 85 year old club.

God.

Avery took the post down off of his website. So I'm thinking the Rangers didn't want it debuted this way...

I'm also a diehard Rangers fan, and I really like it. The Lady Liberty logo was OK, but the sweater it adorned was awful, as were the socks. Which brings me to the next question: What pants, socks, & helmet will they wear with the new thirds? Stylistically, it looks a lot like the 1928-29 sweater, which makes me wonder, could they wear it with old-school tan-colored pants? Maybe tan gloves? I imagine the socks will be same as the current ones but with navy instead of royal, and that the helmets will be navy. My grandfather was first-line center for Stuyvesant High School when they won the city championship in the late 20s (at Madison Square Garden), so personally I think it would be really cool to see the Rangers go all-out to recreate the look from that era...

Wow. That's so boring that I fell asleep looking at it. Woke up and see there is already 60 other posts...

Its fugly should have went with the 70's jerseys and modernize a little but not too much

Sep 17 · 11:28 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAL

Looks like Avery removed the leaked photo from his website.

I like the NY... but if it's blue, then it's worn at home, so what's the point?

Sep 17 · 11:55 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterChris

I realize it's a "historically accurate" New York version of the Rangers jersey worn as their TBTC jersey in 1991-92, but, although it has a basis in the Rangers jerseys of the past, it's not very exciting to look at, is it?

I give it a "meh".

Leave it to Avery to beg for attention and ruin the Rangers' sweater unveiling. He seriously needs to be institutionalized for his narcissism.

As for the sweater, it's ok but a little boring. But what were the Rangers gonna do? Theyre an original six team that hasn't experimented very much with uniforms and this was an anniversary thing. They had to stay traditional.

Sep 17 · 1:05 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterel

It is not bad. I do like the color and the piping. Would have been cool if they stepped out a little. A red sweater would have been cool but it is a rangers jersey, it does have a lot of tradition in it and it is the 85th year.

I really like it!

On the question of the numbers/NOBs... I'm willing to wager that they'll be similar to the 1991-92 throwback, in that they'll simply be red block letters outlined in white--err, ivory/cream/whatever. It wouldn't make much sense to mix the drop-shadow font in... but, in this day and age, who knows?

Sep 18 · 8:17 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterkyojikasshu

The jersey isn't bad but I think they flopped on it by not using the Lady Liberty logo. That was a great jersey and I'm not sure why they didn't reuse that logo.

Sep 18 · 8:36 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnthony

....Google "sports teams that celebrate 85 years" and you get a few articles questioning why the Rangers are evening HAVING it. 85 is so odd of a year to celebrate anyway, 75 and 100 are the norms.

But to the jersey. I've been hit and miss on it since I first saw the picture a few days ago. If you look up the rangers jeresys back in the day (pre 70's) the navy blue jersey shown here is closer to the shade of color used back then. The narrow wording on the front is also very similar.

Like someone mentioned already, it's the original blue and font but not the original "Rangers" on the front. Instead we have a weird royal blue home jersey that bears our team's name, and a navy dark navy blue that has "New York". If you switched the designs on each jersey I think you'd have a more suitable tribute to the franchise history as well as a special alternate jersey to be used.

While that may work as a possibility, the Liberty jerseys were fine for a team in regard to the Rangers simply because it was just that-a 3rd jersey. They should bring back the liberties since it gave us something different and special, and looked great. The newer rangers shield used recently was based on the same colors from that liberty logo, so everything made sense.

So to have a throwback font and colored jersey, but having the 80's road design, used as an alternate really doesn't make any sense. especially when the regular homes are a shade or two lighter. the 9/11 game jerseys against buffalo would work great too. Same current colors just "New York" in front.

You also can't claim anything in regards to the Yankees; They actually kept the same uniforms since the late gehrig days. Before then the uniforms were different, but for the longest time the uniforms have been kept the same. The rangers have actually changed up the uniforms a few times and "updated". So the actual original-traditional feel to them have been long removed.

I am a die hard ranger fan. I hear every say about liberty logo and all that. Honestly the "NEW YORK" is what they used to wear during the 80s and the are not the same jerseys i think the alternate is fine look at most "classic" new york teams the yankees jersey hasnt been changed in over a century so why start now with the blue shirts its not like they made the jersey red personaly the liberty logo was cool but that logo wont look good on any other jersey that a boring plain jersey like it was on

Sep 20 · 12:54 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterBIG B

I personally would have liked to have seen them bring back the NY Rangers logo in the font and maybe the Liberty on the shoulders

Sep 21 · 10:33 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMag

I really love this jersey. Throwback is fantastic, and the lady liberty got old after they expanded the wearing to every friday home game....then every sunday home game.....then every home game that wasn't at 7pm....

Sep 28 · 7:33 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterTyler

Not a fan. Personally my absolute favorite NYR jerseys are 76' / 77' home & away jerseys SOOOOOO BEAUTIFUL how do you guys feel about those? Seeing as they are celebrating a landmark they should wear those or have them as alternates

Sep 29 · 4:22 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMICHAEL

All you Lady Liberty Lovers: That logo is DEAD! Once they determined that the Statue of Liberty was in New Jersey it no longer represents NY. Maybe the Devils will use it on their 3rd jersey. I would have liked to seen the new 3rd with the NYR type lettering in navy or the players number center chest with Rangers arced over it like Dallas. That would be retro

Sep 30 · 7:29 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterNick Fotiu

I think the main point is that its a commemorative jersey. There is not much the Rangers could have done differently for a vintage early 20th century style jersey since all they ever were in that era was basically the diagnal lettered Rangers word mark. I'm glad they did not go with the 1946 varsity style lettering, I really despise all these new wordmark jerseys that RBK edge has imposed on us. I would like to see a new 3rd jersey introduced next season. Hopefully they revive the lady liberty jersey, but if not, something new at least, with a logo crest. I love the pre RBK edge Rangers jerseys, but unfortunately diagnal wordmark just doesnt look right on these new jersey templates.

I was hoping they would put the iconic shield logo on the sweater. The logo failed the first time in 1976-77, mainly because the team changed the entire color scheme of the uniforms. The logo with the red and white traditional striping would have been a winner.
And for those who preferred Lady Liberty....Really? At best that logo should be a shoulder patch. Nothing more.

Oct 2 · 1:29 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSil27

This sweater is the auld school. I think it's meant to be like the earliest versions of the NY Rangers sweater, c. 1930's? I have no problems with going back to the old look.

Oct 6 · 12:05 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterCharles

I like the jersey myself. While the Statue Of Liberty was cool (I liked the white version myself) you would think that w/the 85th aniversary of the Rangers they'd honor their roots and go the same route as Boston did w/their Winter Classics from last season. Maybe a replica of their innaugural jersey could have been interesting? The one jersey I wouldn't mind seeing come out again was that 77-78 jersey w/the jersey shell of the Jets and that bubble number font (w/primary logo on the front too).

Oct 8 · 12:17 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJason

i think this jersey is hot as hell. cant wait to see it on the ice

Oct 12 · 12:19 PM PDT | Unregistered Commentershane

This is an okay alternate. It would be cool if the Rangers where in the winter classic and the iconic statue of liberty logo would and should be on the jersey. I also like the 85 years patch on the right sholder

That Liberty jersey was Horrible !

Oct 23 · 6:32 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterGREG

Looks like any other jersey out there, but it's simple and that's always a good thing.

Oct 30 · 2:14 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterkc

A third jersey should have a logo.........not a diagonal text like the current home and away..............disappointed!!!
