On Location in Vancouver

This isn't really jersey-related, but I was watching Fringe last night and noticed they shot a scene in the Vancouver Canucks locker room. Thought it was pretty cool.

You can clearly read Andrew Alberts' and Roberto Luongo's names on their lockers. Well, Luongo's is not so clear in this image, but it was on my high-def TV.

Interestingly, this scene takes place in an "alternate" version of New York, so I wonder if this means Alberts and Luongo play for the Rangers — or if the Canucks even exist. (Also, the FBI's Fringe Division building in Manhattan looks remarkably like the Vancouver public library.)

Luongo with the Rangers? Don't make me think about that.

Ah, good old Vancouver Doubling. Of course, if you've ever visited TV Tropes, you might be aware that this sibling of California Doubling has its own page as "Stargate City"... but then, if you actually go to TV Tropes, it will ruin your life!

I did my bachelors in Vancouver, they film stuff there all the time. I recognize so many spots in Fringe as places in Vancouver. There are even moments when you can see Canadian flags in the background of scenes quite easily.

Well, as a watcher of Fringe myself, if the Rangers exist in the alternate reality, they don't play @ MSG, as it's been encased in quarantine amber, which was shown in the Season 2 finale.

I never noticed that, but then again, Fringe does shoot in Vancouver.

Fringe also filmed in the lobby of the building I work at a few weeks back. They set up a false elevator set - right next to our bank of 16 REAL elevators. Ah well they can afford it.

Across the street from us is the "Daily Planet" building from Smallville too. It truly is Hollywood North.

That also is the nicest dressing room I have ever seen.

Ha! Good point, jrzman. Didn't think of that.

Anyway, yeah I do remember when the show moved to Vancouver at the beginning of last season. I was working for Fox at the time actually. I recall recognizing Science World in a couple of scenes early on in Season 2. It's funny how the show is set primarily in New York and Boston yet they shoot all the way across the continent. But I guess the money they save shooting in Canada can be spent on better CGI to make it look like they're anywhere in the world.

I noticed those names as well and thought it was damn cool! Also I lived in Van for 20 years and it's always pretty interesting seeing so many locations I know like the back of my hand (Granville Street, Chinatown, etc.) used so often and in the alternate universe.

The shows up here get tax breaks to film in Canada. It's always neat to be downtown and suddenly find yourself in Metropolis or Caprica, heh.

I've never heard of Fringe, but us Vancouverites are quite used to seeing our city double for others on TV and movies. It's still cool though...and cool locker room. Must be nice :P
