Glimpses of a New Calgary Sweater
New logo found through Canada's trademark office
I know I've been ignoring the blog a bit lately, but I'm pretty excited about the new Jersey Galleries I've been putting together. Time now, though, to get caught up on some Flames news.
The Calgary Flames will officially unveil their new third jersey on Sunday afternoon at Flames Fest. Earlier this month, of course, it leaked. Then last week, the Flames revealed a sneak peek in-arena video. But the fun continues.
Up top you can see the new third jersey shoulder patch design in all its detailed glory — rather than just the video game rendering from before. This is possible thanks to the diligence of a blog called SportsDocuments. Writer James Gordon tracked down the new mark via the Canadian Intellectual Property Office website.
In fairness, the logo depicted there is actually black and white, like this.
All I did was fill in the colors based on what we saw in the NHL 14 leak. I can't link you directly to the filing, but if you search Calgary Flames, you should be able to find it. Gordon also pointed out that no other new logos — including the jersey's crest — could be located via the CIPO website at this time. I found that to be the case as well.
It's an interesting mark. Like I've said before, it's like nothing the Flames have used before. Could it be a sign of a new creative direction for the team? Or a simple one-off for a special uniform?
Flames still determined to offer sneak peeks
The jersey has leaked and the Flames themselves have shown a lot of bits already by way of that in-arena video. But regardless, they are continuing to share little "sneak peek" photos via Twitter. They've shown four in the last two days and, presumably, there are more to come before Sunday.
Here's a graphic that shows everything they've tweeted so far.
The first, showing the sleeve or waist stripe or shoulder yoke where the black and red meet, came down Wednesday afternoon. Later that evening came the close-up of the waist with the thin yellow stripe. All stuff we've seen before.
Thursday morning brought a better look at the nameplate — specifically the one on the jersey of Curtis Glencross. Later in the afternoon came another angle, but this time on Mark Giordano's. (UPDATE: As a reader pointed out, this is probably all Glencross. Don't know why I keep assuming Giordano.) And that's where we stand at the time of this writing.
I'll update this post as the Flames release new images. But the main event will be Sunday when the whole thing should be revealed — and then added to the NHL 2013-14 Jersey Gallery. See how we came full circle?
Got any thoughts on the new details we've seen here? Has your gut reaction to the leak changed at all?
New sneak peeks focus on new collar
The Flames shared a couple more photos of their new third jersey today. These show the detail of new collar style featured on the uniform. Unlike any other Reebok template, this one extends down to the laces. (By the way, this proves the EA leak is not 100% accurate. Go back and take a look.)
The first photo came this morning, the other a few hours later. The official unveiling is in two days.
Next pair of photos previews "hanger effect" design
Saturday brought two more sneak peeks at the Flames' new alternate sweater. Specifically, they showed us the new "hanger effect" design — the detail on the inside of the collar. It's the hot new trend from Reebok these days and here in all its glory. It appears to be the snow-capped mountains from the jersey's new shoulder patch.
The first photo came early this morning. The second was released in the afternoon. Both are close-ups of the collar design from slightly different angles. Almost not worth having two separate photos. Nothing you get from one that isn't in the other. But there you have it anyway.
The full uniform will be officially unveiled tomorrow around 1:30 PM MT. Check back here for photos!

Personally, I think that new alternate logo that will be on the Flames new alternate sweater is actually quite nice however, there are a couple things about it that I can't get over. It is the fact that the logo is round and features the team's name, just like the Edmonton Oilers.
I like that logo a lot, actually. If I had to make a complaint, it's that having a circular logo makes them too similar to their nearest rivals Edmonton and Winnipeg.
I don't get why you're so hung up on that being Giordano? The first part of the "L" in GLENCROSS would look the same as the first part of the "I" in GIORDANO. And since you can't see the complete letter to know if it's a "L" or "I", it's far more likely that they're snapping teases of the same jersey.
Reminds me a lot of the old Colorado Rockies' logo.
Since the NHL 14 jerseys weren't the best, I think that the jersey will look way better in person than we all think it will look.
My question is why the heck this logo is not going to be the main chest logo? It's much better than the script "Calgary" with the "C" emblem.
The logo looks awful busy to me. And the 'F' as a mountain peak seems forced.
The only complaint I have is that there's to much black and not enough yellow. Settle down people I'm pretty sure the logo above will be on the shoulders only.
I like the logo but, i like it as the shoulder patch
As it stands now I'm neutral to the jersey. Though I've come to like this logo, it has a nice vintage feel to it as well as unique original features. Nothing much else to be said.
@WildFan: Wow, good point. I suddenly have no idea why I kept thinking that. May have started out thinking it was the C on the front and that locked Giordano into my head. But makes more sense it's Glencross. Goes to show sometimes we just see what our brains want us to see.
Decent logo, but what does it have to do with flames? Looks like Calgary Fields to me
2 more pics have come up on the Flames twitter, showing the shoulder yoke extended down to the front laces, if you want to update this post.

If I had no knowledge of the leak, I would be positively STOKED for this new jersey, shoulder patch included. Of course, I am assuming that no team in a die hard hockey market like Calgary could possibly go the Dallas/Atlanta way and put city script on the front of a jersey (oh wait, Vancouver can do it.... but isn't their 5-year-jersey-swap coming up?)
That said, I am positively CHOKED about this new jersey, knowing that I will likely have to deal with a silly script on the front of a Flames jersey for 2+ years.
Just came back from the Flames website. I like the general concept, but as usual with too many teams, they messed up with little details. The flaming "C" on the front is extraneous, as I said before in my comments on the NHL14 post. And, once again, they placed the captain's and alternate's "C" and "A" on the side of the jersey where the slanting font goes up, therefore squishing too much in one area. Listen, NHL teams, if you're going to have a slanting logo like this, always put captain's letters (or questionable extra front jersey numbers) on the side where the logo is lower. In the case of Calgary, they should have went on the right. Unless there's an NHL rule that states that captain's letters have to go on the left side of the chest, the team's that continue doing this are just plain stupid! I like the striping pattern of these jerseys, and love the shoulder patch! While I'm not a betting man, I could easily see an "all-star" team of Devils, Hurricanes and Flames players all take the ice in their proper team's new red sweaters, with little confusion among fans, commentators, opposing players or officials taking place; they're just all too much alike in basic setup with that black yoke on red jersey with too little in the way of third colors. Bring back the green permanently, NJ! Carolina, drop the yokes and bring back the storm flags! You can keep the yoke, Calgary, if you just drop the flaming "C" and switch those captain's letters! Sigh...
