Kings, Ducks Unveil Stadium Jerseys!

Video stills from NHL

Dodger Stadium game will feature orange versus grey

The 2014 Stadium Series jerseys to be worn by the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings were unveiled this morning. While we await more photos, check out this unveiling video. Or if you can't watch the video, I grabbed some stills for all to enjoy.

Both teams are sticking with their recently unveiled chrome logos. This suggests the other Stadium teams will likely do the same. However, that may not be the case with the Rangers and Devils. I've heard the Rangers will have a "NEW YORK" script on their jersey while the Devils will simply wear their red and green throwbacks. But I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

As rumored, both jerseys have new ligature shoulder patches. We saw L.A.'s on a T-shirt not too long ago. And Anaheim's "OC" logo was barely visible on another shirt. Both are great extensions of the existing brand identities. But you can definitely tell these two jerseys were designed together. That's good if they were only intended for use during this one game. But if the two teams continue to use them as alternate uniforms, it could be awkward.

The close-ups of the sleeve numbers look a lot like the teaser videos released over the weekend.

And here are the nameplates. Anaheim's is unique with the letters looking very thin on the inside.

Looks like this new collar style is here to stay. We first saw it on the Islanders' Stadium Series jersey. Now the Ducks and Kings are repeating it. It's modern with a hint of retro. Personally, I like it.

Remember, the big game is Jan. 25, 2014. Don't miss the NHL's first orange-versus-grey game!

I don't know why professional designers, team presidents, league officials, whoever involved in the process of making new uniforms have such a hard time with stuff and have no idea what fans want. Nike, with their Olympics jerseys that everywhere I've seen have received universal dislike and now RBK with these. Did they bother doing focus groups or anything? Did people say "yeah. Half stripes look great! No! The ducks don't need any accenting colors on their jerseys! The giant skating tangerine look is awesome!"

And again, the NHL/RBK are multibillion companies and yet they couldn't get a better fitting jersey for their big unveiling so Getzlaf doesn't look like he's a sumo wrestler.

Maybe Under Armour or CCM need to try to get into the NHL/international jersey scene. nike and RBK are apparently clueless.

They could have done better with these, for sure.

@EDDIE I certainly agree with you on that. It feels like Reebok has given up on trying to be even slightly creative. I liked the squared shoulder yolks when I saw it the first time, but then every single new jersey had it! Now all these jerseys use the same template. I hope they are paying these people super well...

I really like the Kings' jersey. The Ducks kinda fail at unveiling a jersey; it's almost like they're deliberately hiding the hem stripes. (Or maybe they're hiding the fact that there aren't any?) So I can't really pass judgment on that one until I see the whole thing.

I wish the Ducks would have used helmets like Notre Dame's hockey teams. The HGI Gold Chrome finish would have helped a little. At least to get rid of them having a black lid against LA's, and I don't think flat gold/orange/yellow works as an NHL helmet.

Poor Getzlaf looks like Ron Burgundy in an ugly sweater contest. For some reason the Ducks jersey makes me think of a cardigan. Bad shade of orange and too plain. I give it a 3 out of 10. Don't mind the Kings version at all though, a grey jersey is long overdue and black and white are the perfect accent colours for it. 8 out of 10. Would have given a 9 but the angled sleeve numbers look really goofy.

Meh!! God please don't let the Pens screw this up! Follow the lead of WBS (black away jersey)

The Ducks jersey is a bit generic and bland. They have had many good looks throughout their franchise history with their unique striping style. They could have did some research and come up with something you know is a Ducks jersey the minute you see it. Or better yet, they could have taken someone's concept from here, and went with that. That would have made a lot of people happy...

The Ducks jersey is leaving a bit to be desired. It seems like it's missing something. I do wish they had used the original logo instead, but oh well. I do like the Kings jersey. I love the grey, it does feel very similar to the Islanders. I'm still holding out hope my Penguins go with a gold jersey. I don't think it'll happen, but there's always hope until they release it. By the way does it not bother anyone else that they both have black helmets?

Kings jersey looks sharpe, great to see grey used and I think the colours complement the design features.

I personally like the chrome crown better than the regular and I love anaheims new font with the thin black

Is it just me or does that OC logo kinda resemble a duck head?

Dec 3 · 6:55 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterMarch

They interviewed one of the Ducks and he pointed out what everyone else is saying - he said Getzlaf looks like he was given a boys medium. Lol.

@March: You might be onto something.

There are no stripes at the bottom of the Ducks jersey...you can see the entire jersey on the NHL's instagram account. There is a black hem stripe at the very bottom as well as one on the end of the sleeves.
My take: Ducks TERRIBLE. Only thing they got right was to use orange, but there is way too much of it and it kills it. Kings nailed it, considering they were probably restricted to this new template. Best they could have done. I like it.

The logo and design of the Kings' jersey is great, but it could really use some purple (the Kings' true color).

I have been tying the laces on my jerseys like that for years. There is no goofy bow and the laces ends don't flap around as they are tucked inside the jersey.

As for the Kings helmets, they could go with a silver/grey one. They are actually available from some manufacturers.

Are those only meant to be different? Boy are they UGLY!

Dec 4 · 9:38 AM PST | Unregistered Commentergagp

Individually, I don't think either jersey is great given the weird template they're contrasted to, although the shoulder yoke on the Kings (and recent Isles) is an interesting and fun element that works great with the shoulder patches. However, when they're out on the ice together, I think we'll have a visually interesting game.

Living on the boarder between LA and Orange County the Ducks OC patch is very interesting. it looks great and hopefully is a signal of the direction they're going with their branding. Because of Disney, the Ducks and the Angels got stuck with the Anaheim tag in the 90's. Anaheim is associated with Disneyland (along with suburbs and sometimes a prostitution problem), but using the OC label is broader in terms of recognition outside the So-Cal market and in more inclusive in terms of local fan base - OC has a population of 3.09 million, Anaheim's is 343,000. As an Angels fan from Long Beach right on the OC boarder, I can tell you I never liked the Anaheim tag that Disney affixed to the team in the 90's since I do not identify with Anaheim.

As for my Kings, this would be a good basis for a future 3rd jersey. I also like the smaller captain's C. The patches the Kings are currently using do not fit with their current jerseys.

I can't stop laughing looking at Getzlaf in the uniform. It really cracks me up.It's a great corrections uniform.I feel sorry for any fans of the ducks. Almost as bad as Team Canada's Olympic sweaters.Which should be burnt if you ask me.

If you go to the Team LA store website, they have official images of both the kings and ducks jerseys: http://teamlastore.com/collections/stadium-series-collection

Well I think it has all been said up above but I want to add my two cents. I hate these uniforms. The Kings grey looks washed out, like when you wash a white sock with a black one and it comes out all dirty looking. The Ducks is too simple it doesn't even look like a uniform. Both teams have great uniform history (IMO) and they could have added too that but missed the mark badly!

I am really impressed with the Grey Kings jersey. I like that they are trying a grey jersey for a change and I think that the chromed crown really suits the jersey and blends in very well. As long as they keep the Forum Blue and Gold Throwbacks, I'd love to see this become their alternate jersey, at least for a few years. As for the Ducks, yikes. I don't like their new jersey at all. I love the color orange and I think it is an excellent jersey color if the entire look is done right but in this case, it looks terrible. Orange and Metallic Gold do not go together whatsoever and the chromed 'D' is hideous. I think that the chromed 'D' logo needs to at least be on a black jersey to actually look okay. The Ducks jersey looks like it was designed by Nike. It looks that cheap to me. The thing looks like a practice jersey/real jersey hybrid gone wrong. I'm glad that there are people that like it but for me, it completely missed the mark. What I don't get is why they couldn't have just made an orange version of the original Mighty Duck jerseys and slapped a chromed Mighty Ducks logo on the front. From what I've heard, that's what most people wanted to see. The whole Mighty Ducks look is still quite futuristic and nontraditional compared to the vast majority of NHL jerseys ever made. If they did that, their jerseys would sell like hotcakes compared to what they will make from selling these.

There's nothing I can say about the ducks jersey that hasn't been said already. But I think the Kings deserve all the credit in the world for making their awful chrome logo NOT look terrible. I think it fits nicely with the grey and will make for a great looking game!

Dec 5 · 11:08 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterMorgan

Would it have killed anyone involved to drag an iron across those jerseys before the shoot?

Dec 5 · 12:51 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterSterlingRod

If you notice, Getzlaf is wearing a premier jersey for some reason. You can tell by the jersey material (Kings is more old school CCM), and the fake stitching on the numbers and letters.

Dec 5 · 5:33 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterAndy

Oh man, all these Stadium Series jerseys are terrible. After years of correcting the Reebok Edge the NHL is again going down the bad jersey road with the new Sabres third and these. Gross.

Dec 5 · 6:40 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterEric

They are both kind of underwhelming and I'm not really liking the metallic logos. I like Getzlaf, but it looks like he just ate too much lasagna.
