NHL 2013-14 Third Jersey Schedules
The Carolina Hurricanes have new home and road sweaters this season, but that doesn't mean they're losing the popular black third jersey. In fact, they recently released a schedule that outlines the 12 games in which they'll be wearing it.
The Canes will wear black 11 times at home and once on the road toward the end of the season. It'll make its season debut on Sun., Oct. 13 for an afternoon game against Phoenix.
Additionally, the Hurricanes point out that fans will get to see the new road jersey at home a couple times this year.
They'll sport white at PNC Arena when they host Tampa Bay on Fri., Nov. 1 and against Columbus on Sat., March 29.
I plan to add more third jersey schedules to this blog post as I come across them. Let me know if you spot any — specifically the Sabres' as I'd love to know when that one debuts!
The San Jose Sharks will wear their black third jersey 11 times this season for Thursday and Sunday home games (excluding opening night).
Here's a look at how the schedule shakes out.
- Thurs., Nov. 7 — vs. Vancouver Canucks
- Thurs., Nov. 21 — vs. Tampa Bay Lightning
- Thurs., Dec. 12 — vs. Minnesota Wild
- Sun., Dec. 29 — vs. Anaheim Ducks
- Thurs., Jan. 2 — vs. Edmonton Oilers
- Thurs., Jan. 9 — vs. Detroit Red Wings
- Thurs., Jan. 23 — vs. Winnipeg Jets
- Thurs., March 6 — vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
- Thurs., March 20 — vs. Anaheim Ducks
- Thurs., March 27 — vs. Winnipeg Jets
- Thurs., April 3 — vs. Los Angeles Kings
Only one Sunday date on the list and three Eastern Conference foes in Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Detroit will face the Sharks in black.
By the way, now that the San Jose has new home and road jerseys to match their minimalist thirds, perhaps teal will make a return to the playoffs — should the team qualify this season.
The Sharks first introduced this uniform in 2008.
For a dozen games this season, the Colorado Avalanche will sport blue. The club plans to wear their alternate sweater 12 times, all at home.
Here is a list of those dates.
- Tues., Oct. 15 — vs. Dallas Stars
- Sun., Nov. 10 — vs. Washington Capitals
- Sat., Nov. 30 — vs. Minnesota Wild
- Sat., Dec. 14 — vs. Minnesota Wild
- Sun., Dec. 29 — vs. Winnipeg Jets
- Mon., Jan. 6 — vs. Calgary Flames
- Thurs., Jan. 16 — vs. New Jersey Devils
- Sat., Feb. 1 — vs. Buffalo Sabres
- Sun., March 2 — vs. Tampa Bay Lightning
- Fri., March 14 — vs. Anaheim Ducks
- Thurs., March 27 — vs. Vancouver Canucks
- Thurs., April 3 — vs. New York Rangers
These dates are all over the map. The only night of the week you won't find the Avs in blue is Wednesday. Every other night is covered at some point during the season.
By the way, maybe I'm only noticing this because I'm a Lightning fan, but so far all three teams we have a schedule for plans to wear their third against Tampa Bay at some point this season. I'm looking forward to the variety!

About the whole "wearing road jerseys at home" thing. I think this is a great idea, and they should do it more, in my opinion. I mean, not so much that it gets more home games than the colored jersey does, but like, enough to mix it up a bit. Like, the two main jerseys of all teams are different, and sometimes a little bit more than just a color swap. The 2000-01 season, for example, saw rather a few cases. The Penguins, Caps, Senators, some of the original 6 teams (Habs and Rangers mainly, as it has always been), among a couple others, albeit less minor.
Point is, I'd like to see some more home/road game uniform variation. Not just the alternate (especially for teams that don't have one), but the two main jerseys can be swapped for a game or two. I mean, the white jerseys can't always be for home. The Caps' alternate is white, they can't always wear them at home? Says who? The dark jerseys have been the home standard since 2003-04, but I would think they swapped them for a handful of games per year, especially since most of the alternates back then were colored. Oh, the possibilities. I hope they do this kind of thing more often, variety FTW.
The Warning Flag LIVES!!
With color TV now being the standard, there really isn't a reason why both teams can't wear the darker jersey. As long as they're not the same color scheme (Carolina / Detroit, Tampa/Toronto). Carolina can wear their dark jersey when hosting the Islanders (who could also wear their dark jersey). This happens in soccer and it isn't confusing.
@Advemtureshorts I concur, but like I said, I don't want it to be that the road unis get worn every two games or so. Some of them are very unique compared to the homes and alternates, and I'd like some variety, too. That said, both teams wearing dark jerseys will be great if it's a continuing trend after the Detroit/Toronto Winter Classic. I used to play both dark jerseys in the old NHL games all the time, haha.
I'll say it again. The warning flag pattern on the waist of the previous jerseys was great and unique, and I liked the font of the name and numbers of those jerseys as well. The Hurricanes wanted a cleaner look and all they got was a boring look.
I was completely against the new Hurricanes jerseys until I saw them in action. The white uniform looks great in person. The colors, letters, and numbers really pop out. They looked great from my seats in the PNC arena during the Red/White scrimmage on Sunday. Last night I had another chance to see the red uniform during the pre-season game against Columbus. It is growing on me and I'll probably end up purchasing one. When I do, I'll definately get a player name and number on it. The jersey looks so much better when personalized. When the red jersey is plain, it looks boring.
I'm going to all 11 home games with the black jerseys and I'm going to pretend the canes never changed jerseys! If the canes were smart they should have used the fan favorite black alternate as the basis for the new jerseys, I think all us caniacs would agree that would've been a much better direction, though I don't really think any change was needed.
Great! that means the Sharks wont be weighed down by shoulder yokes and waist stripes for 11 more games
