In 1992, the NHL expands to 24 teams with the addition of two more franchises. A record eighth Canadian team joins the league, bringing back the old Ottawa Senators moniker. The NHL also tries its luck once again in the southern United States with the Tampa Bay Lightning membership.

Elsewhere, logo and uniform changes abound as the New Jersey Devils swap green for black while the Pittsburgh Penguins and Hartford Whalers refresh their brands. The Penguins go with wholesale logo and uniform changes as the Whalers add silver with their update.

The Canucks also made some uniform changes. Before the 1992 season, the Orange trim on their jerseys and logo changes to Red.
