Tough one...right down to the wire I think. I voted Whalers.
Whalers will harpoon the Leafs.
I can't decide...
Am I the only one thinking that the Whalers logo ( the new one, but old still kick ass) is the best of all time, all sports?
the NHL should be punished for allowing the whalers to leave Hartford. Just another example of Bettman's hubris and stupidity

I understand that the whalers had a terrific franchise.. But I can tell you that NC loves our Canes very much <3
They love the team so much that they could barely muster 90% capacity for the defense of the Cup. I assure you, if the Whalers were defending a Cup you'd have to have had season tickets to get into a game, because there's no way that you would have been able to buy tickets walking up on the day of the game.
The sad thing is that many of the fans would have been bandwagoneers who had disparaged the Whale in the 90s, but the fact remains that the team would have sold out every game, even if the arena had 20,000 seats, if they were defending the Cup.
And I'd place the move of the Whale as just one of the many elements of the monumental Bettman blunder known as the Southern Expansion. Look at attendences, not only in Raleigh, but also in Miami, Nashville, Phoenix and Atlanta. And they want to keep the Preds in a city where they're losing money hand over fist? And to add two expansion teams, including one in Kansas City, which was a complete mistake and failure in 1975, when hockey was MORE popular in the US than it is today???
You forget the Whalers sold something like 95% of their seats in a crappy arena in the middle of a then crappy city that had no parking, for 3 years before they left, even though they hadn't made the playoffs since 1992.
The college teams here sellout all the time and the AHL teams all draw well. Not to mention the coverage a team 20 miles from ESPN would get.
NC may love their team now, but we loved it in tough times, and still love it now.
