this is pathetic. everyone knows its going to end up with the 4 remaining canadian teams. so much for that theory of us canadians not having any national pride. the evidence is right here on this tourny blog. ruining what was supposed to be a pretty cool logo challenge with their homer voting. i now take it upon myself to apologize to chris and all true hockey fans out there who were looking for a fair representation of this challenge. way to go fellow canadians. i cant wait for the oilers to be crowned "greatest logo in the nhl"

Well at least you're honest.

I think the new Canucks logo is one of the best in the NHL.

Sep 10 · 7:43 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJeff

couldn't agree more andrew. what was once promising has demised into something not worth voting on.

am i really to believe that the canucks logo beat the red wings?

that somehow that hideous oilers logo is going to beat the avs?

that the senators new logo will beat the flyers?

thanks a lot you homers for destroying this tourney!!!!!

Hell, I'm a Canucks fan and I don't think we should have made it past Detroit.

However, I can see Montreal winning, and I don't think I'd ahve any problems at all with that.

If we were counting the votes now, that's definitely not the case Andrew. Philly would beat the Sens and the Blues would beat the Canucks.

However, if Chris was a true hockey fan? Perhaps he would have a little more input on hockey history and know that the Sens have a little more logo history than he's letting on in this blog.

As for the Oilers logo beating the Avs logo. The Avs logo could be simplified more than it is. Why not just remove the puck that is pretty much non existent and take out all the detail in the avalanche and figure out a more simple way of producing it.

I don't see a lot of great American logos, so why would I vote for them being a Canadian? In the Philly vs Atlanta I voted for Philly because it's much more simple and to the point.

However, now that they are facing the Sens, which are my team. Of course bias is going to come into play. Not to mention I really don't like the flying P.

Oh, war and defense? Why exactly should Detroit have beaten the Vancouver logo?

OK Andrew, show me your KING OF THE WORLD badge and then maybe I'll agree that your opinion counts more than 20,000 voters! But until then this is just your opinion and your vote counts as 1, just like the rest of us. WE ARE TRUE HOCKEY FANS! What the hell makes you so much holier than every other hockey fan out there?

IT IS NOT PATHETIC!!! I think Chris is doing a great job with this poll and the people who are following this tourney are the ones who care about hockey and the logos of the nhl. Andrew, do your own freakin tournament of logos if you think that only your opinion counts! It's fine to disagree, but don't discount the entire thing because YOU don't agree with the results! Get a clue!

I need a little help here. What did I miss, DylanSensFan? What is keeping you from perceiving me as a "true hockey fan" (your words)? What bit of hockey history have I overlooked? I actually want to know. I don't want to be posting inaccurate information here.

By the way, I'm merely presiding over the logo tournament and trying to leave my opinion out of it. I want this to be about everybody else's opinions. That's why I don't vote.

Thanks for the comments, everybody!

Ottawa Sentors.
National Hockey League (NHL) 1917/18-1933/34

Chris, I would start with the "0" on the Senators shoulder patch. The Ottawa Senators were originally apart of the NHL back in the day and won a few Stanley Cups back then as well. After joining the NHL.

I just notice you have a vote for the best all time logo for a team. I feel the Sens should be up there, as they have 3 viable logo changes. From their beginnings in the NHL to their re beginnings.

Sep 10 · 10:15 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDylanSensFan

This coming from an AVS Fan:

Simply put, a logo that incorporates Motor City like the Red Wings have should beat a collaborative effort of the Indian tribes that created the Canucks logo. Spare me your sympathy for the Native Americans. The Red Wings logo is more iconic and relevant than the Canucks.

By the way, the 1991/92 - Present Senators ARE A LOT DIFFERENT THAN the 1917 - 34 Senators. Cmon, do you REALLY have to go that far back to embrace their GLORY YEARS and then tell me YOU WERE AROUND FOR IT? It doesn't make sense. They were two different teams in two different eras. No sir, your team's cups back then are completely irrelevant to the modern hockey club that plays in Ottawa now. Hence the big ZERO on the shoulder patch. No CUPS, NO GLORY!

Furthermore, the Sens new logo is atrocious.

Okay, I do see your point, DylanSensFan. But the original Senators team was a completely different franchise — only the same city and team name as today's club. Other than that, it's not the same club and this may be a personal preference on my part, but I won't consider them as anything but.

Furthermore, a Senators logo history vote is coming. Notice the "More logo history polls to be listed soon" statement beneath the list. I believe I have the Sens scheduled for September 27. It will include three logos. (Not the one from 1917.)

Thanks again for the comments!

What a disgrace. It's a shame that fans like Canuck-fans have ruined what looked like was going to be a pretty cool competition.

Sep 10 · 11:26 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterRay Irwin

Blues logo is hands down the better logo between these two...the Canucks logo (an Orca Whale) has nothing to do with the word Canuck...just the ownership group...how does a logo like that come close to the classic Blue Note? Vote Note!

Sep 10 · 11:41 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAndrew

I feel like I need to debunk this flawed theory that seems to be floating around that Vancouver Canucks fans are somehow responsible for "ruining the tournament."

First, Canucks fans weren't the only ones voting. Almost 25,000 votes were cast and I defy anyone to prove they were even in the majority. And the idea that any Canucks fans were coming back to vote over and over again is simply misleading and false.

Second, as the creator of this blog, I don't feel the tournament is ruined. Many of you have made the valid point that just because a logo has been around for a long time doesn't automatically put it into the "best" category. The majority of the people who cast votes felt the Canucks had a better logo — for whatever reason, which I might add, was entirely subjective, just like this entire tournament.

So as I've said before, don't take it so seriously!

Fans from all over the world are voting in this tournament. I've heard from many of them personally. The idea that a handful of folks from Vancouver could tip the scales truly bewilders me.

On the idea that some people are casting votes for their favorite team is perfectly valid and there's nothing wrong with that. As a Lightning fan, I would've chosen the Bolts logo over almost any other one because of what it means to me. I see a Stanley Cup championship when I look at it.

Logos, like any artwork, are meant to evoke different feelings. When you look at a logo it makes you feel something. For example, to a Habs fan, a Leafs logo may evoke contempt as long-time rivals.

Vote for whichever logo you want for whatever reason you want. This tournament is for you! Ignore people who think theirs in the only opinion that matters. Yours does too and you can make it count by voting the way you choose.

Enjoy the rest of the tournament! I'm looking forward to seeing the results at the end!

(Plus, after this is over, we'll have another logo tournament to follow. Details coming a week from today.)

Of coarse we are going to vote for our logo why would we vote for our enemy's!

Why would a flying music note be a sweet logo?

Sep 10 · 1:02 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterclint

Great comment Chris. you said what i wanted to, but couldnt.

I'm a die-hard canucks fan. since i was a kid i loved the canucks. But don't get me wrong, i like some other teams, and can appriciate a great logo when i see one. So far in this tourny it has been rather easy, now i'm stumped. i really like the new canucks logo, but i've always admired the blues' logo. I have been deciding by saying "what one would i prefer to wear" trying to keep my canucks loyalty to a minimum. This VS and the habs-NJ VS are stumping me. but i think habs/canucks will gain my votes.

Although i'm a sturdy 'Nucks fan, i will vote for a better logo if we go against one.

Sep 10 · 1:39 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterRobert

Well said Robert, couldn't have put it better myself. Also responding to an earlier post for those who are not familiar with the basis of the canucks logo, I will explain. The word "canuck" also means canadian and is very original. The orca on the logo may be tied in previous ownership, but is also a symbol of Vancouver and British Columbia as we are a home to the killer whale, (orca). We are not simply a team with a corporate logo and a cheesy name.. Try to think before you speak next time.

i like the blues logo, it symbolizes the team.

I know i dont get the Canuks logo
its hard to grasp for me

the st louis logo is a music note, givng me that its a music city and the blue color make me see its the blue which together makes it the blues

i get that logo and any logo that describel the city is a good logo and detail makes it great

Sep 10 · 2:08 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAvalanchesabres

Why would you vote for the logo of your enemy? Oh, I don't know perhaps because it's a poll about logos and not about "who's your favorite team?" I don't mind the newest canuck logo but there is no way it should of beaten the flyin tire. I just wish Vancouver would pick a logo and stick with it. As far as the Bluenote goes it's over 40 years old now therefore a classic as well as being simple, clean and distinctive. When you see it you know exactly what it represents. It has a deep and meaningful significance to the city of St. Louis and it's people.

If you truly want to know who has the best logo. . then you should block the IP Addresses from voting more than once. . Period.

You need to lay off the pot to those of you who think the Canucks logo is better than the Wings. .

If you're going to tell me that you don't have 14 year old kids on here voting 50 times a day .. then you also need to lay off the pot.

Just go to the Canucks.com fan forum. That place. . like this "tourney" is a joke.

I gotta admit, i wish this were a fair fight but seems the canadian teams are gonna make it through. Everyone has their own opinions, but in my head best logo in teh leaugue is still the Blackhawks... i love that freakin logo..(i'm a canuck fan btw)

best logo's

1. Blackhawks
2. Devils
3. Habs
4. Pens
5. Flames ( even though i hate them)

p.s. and for the record, i love my canucks logo, but i hate that stupid vancouver on the jerseys

I'm sorry, even with the monochrome color swap, that orca still looks like it was hit in the face with a bazooka filled with lipstick and hand cream, and this is coming from someone who loves the aesthetic of NW-coast native art. They create beautiful images but it's NOT good sports-logo fare. It'll either come out looking like a weak imitation of the real thing, or it'll look too busy for it's own good (even without a huge wordmark slapped on top).

The totem is apart of Canadian history, especially Western Canadian history and so are the First nations tribes that produced them. Killer whales that migrate from Seattle to the coast of British Columbia are also a very real and relative interpretation of the culture of our coast. The killer whale breaking through the ice is not only a natural happening during their winter hunting, but it relates to hockey, being that hockey is played on ice. The shape of the "C" pertains to Canuck's. All very relevant and packaged simply and effectively. I'm not sure if you are American or not. But your sheer lack of historical knowledge makes your comments skewed and bias because you aren't basing yourself with any factual evidence. The relevance of Detroit being the motor city makes sense and that is why I understand their logo? I don't know the history of the red wing. But as a whole I understand what the designers of Detroit's red wing logo were trying to get at. Is Detroit's logo better than the Canuck's perhaps it has some historical significance that the Vancouver logo doesn't, but in no way does that make it a better logo or any more relevant.

By the way, the 1991/92 - Present Senators ARE A LOT DIFFERENT THAN the 1917 - 34 Senators. I dunno how you interpreted what I wrote before as my going back to the glory years? I was simply stating that Ottawa and the Senators have more history than just that of recent history! The Ottawa franchise was apart of the NHL in it's beginnings and should by rights be apart of the history of their logo, as the shoulder patch is a testament to the team of old, so the "New" franchise is saying hey... the old one existed in the history of hockey and played apart in what the NHL is today.

Being 26 years old, I surely wasn't around back then. However, I do like to get a sense of history, rather than just winging everything I say or think about in this life.
You seem to be riding by the seat of your pants with everything you post, come back with something realistic and arguable, pertaining to what I've posted and then you might have a debate.

Furthermore, the Sens new logo is atrocious."

I wouldn't consider the AVS logo a work of Art. At least all the lines of the new sens logo are clean and simple. The AVS logo could use some work. There is supposed to be a hockey puck?

Oh and War.
A logo is not an icon, look up the precepts of design.
