Preview New Flames Threads

The Calgary Flames won't make an official announcement until later today, but here's what their new Rbk EDGE uniforms look like. A couple of fans got their hands on the official online photo gallery this morning before it was taken down.

I'll obviously have more later today. Until then, notice the new shoulder patches. Canadian flag on one side. Albertan flag on the other. Very unique.

What a great rebuttal. I guess you are conceding the facts.

Actually, Los Angeles did have it rather large and seperate from the crest, but they had it along the bottom strip of the shirt and inside a bit of striping that seperated it from the rest of the uniform helping it fit in, unlike what vancouver has done which is essentially slap a large nameplate on the front of the shirt to indentify their town since they couldn't come up with a proper logo to do that for them.

I'm in the school of though that a logo should be the same on both jerseys, not one white and another black. Pick one and roll with it.

Yet another few tweaks here and there Edge jersey in the NHL.

hmmm at first glance i thought they were actually pretty nice, but the more i look at them the less i like. first of all the piping is horrible. unless you're going to fill in the underarms with a different colour, the piping is just plain unnecessary. as far as the canadian flag goes i do like it because i'm all for canadian pride (after all, it really is our game), but it seems a little bit like a slap in the face of all other canadian hockey markets. i just get this image in my head of the flames and maple leafs going head to head in the thunderdome, to see who has the right to call themselves "Canada's Team". all that being said though, i really like that black home logo. so simple, yet it just jumps out at you from that red backgrond.

come on, whoever is angry because someone wrote something about "pulling a vancouver"... grow up please... i mean, it IS funny ;) It does NOT fit the jersey (which looks great apart from that IMHO btw)

@topic: I like the new Flames uniform... the patches are... childish, senceless or whatever but it's only a shoulderpatch.. if that's it for the downsides then it's a nice jersey i think.

I think these are the worst of all jerseys that were unveiled. And I agree that it is very wrong of them to put a Canadian flag and an Albertain shield. A big dis to the Oilers and all Canadian teams.

Sep 4 · 10:52 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterLucas

And by the way... The CANADIENS (!!!) are canadas team anyway, count the cups, look at the name... they don't need to add any flag on their jersey ;) owned you guys :D

All of you who are leaving crap about Calgary trying to become "Canada's Team" are the ones that need to grow up.

Nothing is stopping the rest of the teams from Canada from identifying with their nation. Heck, most of them already do. The Canadiens are... The Candiens. The Maple Leafs have... A Maple Leaf. The Canucks are the Canucks and have VANCOUVER in ridiculously sized letters accross their chest.

The two teams from Alberta are the only ones that don't have any real Canadian identity to their uniforms already, so why is it so horrible that they want that? Who's to say the Oilers won't be doing the same thing, nothing is stopping them from doing it, thats for sure.

That's very bold of the Flames to put the Canadian and Alberta flag on their jerseys. I love it.

It would be redundant to express my opinion on the stupid flag patches, so I go on about that. As for the rest of the jersey, it looks ok. Perhaps the piping comes down to the point where the numbers are are. I have to question the designers though, with Vancouver's too....what 5th grader came up with some of these hideous ideas? (Flag patches, "VANCOUVER". Maybe the oilers will put a huge map of Canada on their jerseys. Get with it designers...We're not morons, we know where there play. Problem is, the designers probably don't.

These Calgary uniforms look horrible. The odd piping and the color mismatched patches make it look very minor league. BTW, I think the "Vancouver" wordmark looks great on the Canucks uniforms!

Sep 4 · 11:13 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

the white on the logo would have looked awful they kept it looking nice

Sep 4 · 11:14 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

as an oilers fan i am apalled that Calgary feels they are "Alberta's Team"... let's not forget Edmonton

Sep 4 · 11:19 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Who the hell ever said just because they put the flag on their jersey they are claiming to be "Alberta's Team"

Thats something that you dumb fools have made up out of nothing. They just want to identify with their region, they didnt purchase exclusive rights to fly the flag of alberta on their uniforms, Edmonton can do the same thing if they want to.

You might not like the patches but come on don't accuse them of doing something they obviously have not done just because your team didnt do it first.

Sep 4 · 11:22 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

Of any team that should have a provincial flag on their jersey, shouldn't it be, you know, the team of the CAPITAL of the province in question? Now even if the Oilers do put similar patches on their jerseys, this is just Calgary taking the piss.

Sep 4 · 11:25 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

It's the 100th anniversary of the AAHA (alberta something hockey association) which is why the Flames decided to have the alberta flag and canadian flag on their jerseys. It's a one year deal, next year they're getting a new logo for the shoulders.

Sep 4 · 11:26 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

"what is so funny about a wordmark with its city names? nashville did it, washington did it, dallas did it, LA did it and YET, you guys all must continue these unoriginal and overused jokes at vancouvers, and ONLY at vancouvers."

It's because Vancouver's wordmark dwarfs the logo itself. If they made it WAY smaller it'd be just fine.

We HAD to put the flags on the jersey because we know that there aren't any other teams in this country who have a shot at winning. We're taking the burden on ourselves here guys, y'all can just go and play Wii golf all winter now 'cause the Flames got it from here.

"Thats something that you dumb fools have made up out of nothing. They just want to identify with their region, they didnt purchase exclusive rights to fly the flag of alberta on their uniforms, Edmonton can do the same thing if they want to."

You're right. Most teams try to recreate region-identification through things like 'subtlety' or 'good design'. At least making such a brash, uncalled-for gesture with the shoulder patches fits perfectly with the obnoxious, overcompensating behaviour that goes on at the Red Mile.

Sep 4 · 11:36 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

see i told you - coat of arms = against the law when its to be donned for commercial use. flags it be; now the new oilers jersey will have to have the canadian patch on the left side and the albertan patch on the right.

I....I'm getting a vision...playoffs...first round...game six at the 'Dome...a white jersey with wings...second overtime...one million bandwagoning, smug faces simultaneously erased...

Sep 4 · 11:38 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I like the new jerseys, with the exception of the flags. People like a team, not necessarily the area they come from. I think the flags will be short lived.

Sep 4 · 11:40 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJermey

Gotta say, I think they're terrible. The vertical and horizontal mix of stripes looks awkward, as does the stupid pin-striping. I'm sure the "coat-tails" that the RBK template uses will make the jerseys look even crappier (This affects all teams with horizontal stripes). While we're on it, the shoulder patches are a stupid idea.

I really like Calgary's jerseys from last season. Can't say the same anymore.

Sep 4 · 11:44 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymous

I am against the patches just because they look stupid on the jersey, regardless of whether or not they are claiming to be Canada's team or Alberta's team. They just plain look out of place. This could be speculation, but the Oilers may have opted to release their jerseys so late to get a feel of how fans in other markets reacted to the new jerseys, thus giving them time to change any whacked out ideas they may have had.

Sep 4 · 11:45 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterChristopher

I'm sick of RBK already. The form fitting jerseys look like crap on players, the coat-tails at the bottom are awkward...ugh fucking gary bettman.

"People like a team, not necessarily the area "

You, my friend, have just explained perfectly one reason why they might have chosen to put the flags on the uniform. More and more people are growing to support 'Teams' with absolutely no regard for history or regional identity. Personally I think its a bit of a joke when you walk through the streets of Boston and ask someone why they are wearing a Red Wings jersey, and they don't say "I was born there" or "My father was a fan" but they say something along the lines of "I don't know, they are just good I like that, so what I grew up in Boston".

Thats the problem, and I applaud the Flames advertant or inadvertant attempt to bring back a bit of regional indentity in their shirts.

Too many people are taking teams for granted now that they are recruiting players from all over the world and some teams are losing identity with their own communities. This didn't used to be a problem as teams may primarily recruit players from in and around their area, young children who would grow up in the region of a team would want to play for that team and would go through the ranks with that team, not just accept the first contract that is thrown at them as seems to happen today.

Thank You for unintentionally supporting the Flames somewhat controversial move, it shows the rational point of view is not totally ungrounded.
