Red Wings vs Predators

vs
RED WINGS
PREDATORS
4-9
7-5

The Aesthetics
Neither of these logos are very simple in design but they're complete opposites in color. The Red Wings logo is rather monochrome while the Predators logo just goes nuts with color. Ultimately, that will give the Preds the edge here.
Predators

The Nickname
I'd imagine any Red-Winged bird would be smart enough to fly up high so as to avoid the Predators on the ground.
Red Wings

The Analysis
Even though I think the Red Wings logo could use some upgrades (think Boston Bruins), it is still very effective and one of the most well-known in all of sports. That has to earn it some credit, right? The reason I'm giving in this point, though, is because it takes that extra step in referencing their home city with the wheel (you know, Motor City) while the Predators does not. And so ends the tournament for the Wings.

Senators vs Panthers

vs
SENATORS
PANTHERS
5-6
11-2

The Aesthetics
There's a lot of detail in each logo but it doesn't really get bogged down in it. But still, that panther is scary. We're anticipating a logo change for the Senators, but could it really be better than the Panthers?
Panthers

The Nickname
It's a Senator who sits in his government office making laws to protect animals such as the Panther. He, therefore, has the upper hand in this relationship.
Senators

The Analysis
These two teams have nicknames that are associated with their city, so a logo that references it specifically is doing double duty. The Florida panther is from Florida. Ottawa is the capital oif Canada where government representatives get together. But in the Senators logo, you could say there's a gold "O" for Ottawa and a red "C" for Canada. Or at least that's what I'm telling people. And the Panthers are done for this tournament.

Flames vs Avalanche

vs
FLAMES
AVALANCHE
10-1
11-1

The Aesthetics
Despite what some readers may think, I actually like letter-based logos. We've got flames on a "C" and an avalanche on an "A." Plus, I've said before that I feel like the Avalanche logo will be an all-time NHL logo classic. But that's not to say the Flames logo isn't already. However, when we look at the elements of these logos, the avalanche is being led by a subtle puck and that is cool.
Avalanche

The Nickname
This is the ultimate battle. Fire and ice. The Flames melt the Avalanche, turning it into a waterfall which extinguishes the fire. That was a pretty good one.
Flames

The Analysis
This is another hard call to make. If you want to know my thoughts on these logos, you should go back and read their previous matches since I'd rather not go through it all again. The deciding factor, though, will be that as one of the few Canadian teams, the Flames logo's "C" can stand for Calgary or Canada. The "A" is only for Avalanche.

Hurricanes vs Sabres

vs
HURRICANES
SABRES
10-1
6-5

The Aesthetics
These two logos are definitely in the same league. The colors may be different but the designs are very similar. Notice how they're both outlined in silver. Weird. Anyway, I'm partial to the puck in the eye of the storm in the Hurricanes logo.
Hurricanes

The Nickname
I'm not sure a swordfight is the wisest thing to do in a Hurricane. Those winds can make blunt object deadly. Imagine what it could do with a sharpened Sabre.
Hurricanes

The Analysis
I've said before that the Sabres logo makes for a very strong sports symbol. The problem it has here is that its more buffalo than sabre. At least with the Hurricanes, at least you get a hurricane. But really, how can you deny the impressiveness of the 'Canes logo? Like I've said, the only thing I'd change is the aspect. Make it a little rounder — like an actual hurricane.

Blue Jackets vs Coyotes

vs
BLUE JACKETS
COYOTES
11-2
5-6

The Aesthetics
These are a couple of young logos — less than five years under their belts. The Coyotes logo certainly says desert but not any better than the old one. I like it, but not more than the Blue Jackets logo. These is where small detail can actually help.
Blue Jackets

The Nickname
If a Coyote snuck up on a Blue Jacket while he was sleeping, do you think he'd be able to react quick enough to avoid becoming dinner? I have my doubts.
Coyotes

The Analysis
The Blue Jackets logo features an Ohio flag forming a "C" for Columbus. How can you improve on that? The Jackets definitely hit the mark with this logo. Nice to see them going with it as the primary this season. The Coyotes logo doesn't really have anything like that and it just looks awkward to me. By the way, this is the finale for the Jackets.

Kings vs Blue Jackets

vs
KINGS
BLUE JACKETS
7-5
10-2

The Aesthetics
Both of these logos have lots of pointy edges. I don't know why that matters. Anyway, I like the color schemes in each logo and despite the fact that neither one has existed for very long, I see the Blue Jackets logo becoming a classic... you know, one day when the team actually makes the playoffs and that sort of thing. The Kings have struggled to find an identity when it comes to logos and I feel like this is just another in a long line.
Blue Jackets

The Nickname
An army is usually at the King's command. But in fact, it was the ancestors of the Blue Jackets who overthrew the King almost a hundred years before. So it's in their blood.
Blue Jackets

The Analysis
I know it isn't vital for a logo to incorporate the home city, but it's always a nice touch. You've got suns on either side of the crown in the Kings logo and the Ohio flag wrapping around a silver star for the Blue Jackets. I'm also a fan of subtlety in logos and the Kings are guilty. Check out those hockey sticks on top of the crown. If they were blatant, I'd be hesitant, but since they aren't, they'll help the Kings logo avoid the sweep. One more match left for each logo in this tournament.

Panthers vs Canadiens

vs
PANTHERS
CANADIENS
11-1
7-4

The Aesthetics
That panther makes for one fierce logo. Unfortunately for the Panthers, though, simplicity is going to win the day for the Canadiens logo. There's a profound quality to it that's hard to describe which likely stems from the fact that it's only been around since the beginning of time itself. No, I'm not usually one to bend to the irritating whim of tradition, but what can I say? I'm helpless against the force today.
Canadiens

The Nickname
On the other hand, a hungry Panther would totally eat a Canadien for breakfast.
Panthers

The Analysis
The Panthers logo speaks for itself, but not necessarily Florida or Miami. Whatever. The Canadiens logo speaks French to me, although there's been some debate about the meaning of the "H" here among the readers at the NHLToL. And when I say "debate," I of course mean me being a smartass. Now once and for all, may I state my opinion here before ultimately giving this point to the Habs. I understand that back in the day (1917 to be precise, right?), the "H" stood for hockey as the team was called Le Club de Hockey Canadien or something to that effect. However, my (ignorant?) stance is that in today's world where the team is more commonly known as the Habs, why can't the logo evolve to take on new meanings? I'm actually asking if anyone has a good reason why that makes absolutely no sense. Because I'm sure that's the case.

Bruins vs Devils

vs
BRUINS
DEVILS
8-3
12-1

The Aesthetics
I was going to make a comment about how both of these logos have circles for primary elements. But what's wrong with circles, anyway? They've long made for great logos worldwide in every aspect. Anyway, they each also have letters inside their circles. Though, here's where I think I'd be more impressed if the "B" formed some sort of bruin since the "NJ" manages to form a devil. Good stuff.
Devils

The Nickname
Devil, all-powerful, et cetera. Bruin, itty-bitty bear in comparison. Fire, brimstone, hell, move on. Stupid Satan. Go ahead, smite me with your pitchfork! (Okay, that's enough.)
Devils

The Analysis
I don't know what it is that makes the Bruins logo stand out so much. Maybe its the thick black lines over yellow. Not that the Devils logo has nothing to offer. This is a tough one. But I have yet to actual mention this so I'm going to take this opportunity. It's been pointed out to me that the spokes behind the "B" form a wheel, a hub if you will. And why is this significant? In fact, Oliver Wendell Holmes referred to the State House in Boston as the "hub of the solar system." Long story short: It stuck. And here we are. The Hub of Hockey. End of the road for the Devils, by the way. Count 'em up.

Panthers vs Sabres

vs
PANTHERS
SABRES
10-1
6-4

The Aesthetics
I wonder if the Panthers logo might just be the most fear-inspiring in the league. I almost said scary. But it's the "Buffaslug" that's scary. But as far as it being a good sports logo, it's a tough call — even though Sabres fans hate it. But come on, is there realy a question here?
Panthers

The Nickname
In the hands of an experienced swordsman, a Sabre is rather dangerous, even to a Panther.
Sabres

The Analysis
Look, the animals in both logos have red eyes. Creepy. Anyway, panther? Check. Sabre? Sort of, check. It's been pointed out there's a very subtle blue sword extending from the horn on the buffalo which doubles as the sword's handle. I kind of see it. But the Panther is much cooler.
Panthers

Blue Jackets vs Stars

vs
BLUE JACKETS
STARS
10-1
6-5

The Aesthetics
Both of these logos have five-pointed stars as a primary element. You could even say the Stars have two stars — a gold one and a green one. Ah, but the Blue Jackets logo has the most when you count the 12 in the Ohio flag. So I'll give them this point for that and the fact that there are no words in it. A logo is a symbol in my book. (And don't start in with how words are symbols too. I don't want to hear about it.)
Blue Jackets

The Nickname
I don't think the Blue Jackets win this war. A bayonet doesn't stop a Star from burning. Not even a little bit.
Stars

The Analysis
This is a difficult decision. Both of these logos are appropriate. I've talked about the big "lone star" in the Stars logo a number of times. The Ohio flag almost forms a "jacket" around the silver star. But I like the Stars logo's Texas reference. It's clever.
