On the Ice, Nothing's Scarier
This always happens once the season gets going. I have less and less time to update the web site and I know many of you are disappointed by that. But I'm just one guy with a job and a life (sort of). Anyway, when I have time and content worth posting, I'll be here. (No plans to shut down like last year.)
All right, so here's today's content worth posting. The OHL's Kingston Frontenacs paid tribute last night to Don Cherry of all people — by wearing jerseys modeled after his trademark plaid suit.
Does anything make you smile more than that? It's just so ridiculous.
The jerseys will be auctioned off online Here's the full release from the Frontenacs.
The Kingston Frontenacs are pleased to announce that on Wednesday, October 21st, 2009, they will be honouring Canadian Forces Base Kingston in their annual salute to the military and Don Cherry will be joining them at the event.
On that night, the Kingston Frontenacs will be unveiling and wearing a limited edition, one-of-a-kind Don Cherry game sweater. Each Don Cherry sweater will be autographed by the Canadian hockey legend and then made available for sale in an on-line auction, with proceeds from the monies raised to be donated to Soldier On.
Seriously, who wouldn't want one of those jerseys? Looks like they're all starting around $150. Get your bids in now!
By the way, nothing is funnier than Cameron Gaunce's face in this ceremonial faceoff photo-op. A true WTF moment.
Thanks to Carlo for sending this in.
All right, back to the NHL now for some quick updates. Yesterday, I posted a link to Twitter about third jersey article on NHL.com. It outlined a lot of information we already know and touched on a few new items — primarily with regard to the Cats and Avs.
The biggest new info is that the Florida Panthers have set a debut date for their third jersey. Ladies and gentlemen — Monday, November 23 hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins.
This is actually the only alternate sweater in this year's batch we have yet to see. Either they are the best team in the NHL at keeping secrets... or it's the Panthers and no one cares what their third jersey looks like.
I live in Fort Myers (technically Panther territory, not Lightning) and that game will be televised on FS Florida. That means I'll be able to offer HD video of the new sweater in action.
By the way, I just realized the Panthers and Penguins play each other in Miami both on Oct. 23 and Nov. 23. Weird.
The NHL.com article is the first official confirmation that the Colorado Avalanche will unveil a new third jersey in mid-November.
Specifically, it says that the sweater "will be worn for the first time in an unspecified mid-November game. A press conference will act as the grand unveiling a day or two before the game."
The only mid-November game the Avs play at home is on Saturday, November 14 against the Canucks. That's what I call a safe bet. We should probably expect that press conference on Nov. 12 or 13.
In case you missed it, here's an unconfirmed look at that new sweater.
That's it for today. When I next have time to update the site, I promise a concept post. You have my word!

Actually the Oct 23rd game is in Pittsburgh, not Florida
I'm bidding on one of those jerseys! I love ugly jerseys! I wish I had one of those Ronald McDonald ones from last season.
Well to be fair I beat you to that NHL.com link on the comments back here, but I'm just glad to see you're back in action.
What's going on with the IceHL? Getting a decent amount of jersey submissions?
Just so everyone is aware, the Wild's third jersey debuted last night, and it looks great

You can jump to the photo gallery from there. Love it. Bring on uniqueness and color. Welcome back !
AHHH ! the wild's 3rd looks awful on the ice.
not common that a great jersey looks so bad in reality. the helmet, jersey, gloves and pants are all different shades of green and the overall result is bad. they look like garbage bags out there.
FAIL.
totally disagree

how can you knock that jersey? It's great !
I would like to see a team rock a Celtics green, too. that'd be sweet. Now we need to see Dallas lose those lame-o colors.
I'm sure they'll fix the gloves ... the rest of the jersey/ helmet looks fine to me.
Ditto, as long as they switch to green and wheat gloves, it will look great. With the green and red gloves it looks bad since there's obviously very little red in the sweater.
I Can't knock my team and i love the look but the best part of the night was Cherry riding out to center ice in a military truck in the gunners position
I swear hockey fans are Luddites. I can't stand the wilds 3rd. I'm probably the only person who don't jizz his pants over the old timey look.
@ Josh
Don't worry, I did it twice, so we've got you covered.
haha
yeah thought the wild's jersey looked ok, i still think they need a lighter shade of green because on the tv it looked almost black
Those Cherry nod-to jerseys are really a stretch. While they were at it, they should of replaced their helmets with fedoras! I guess there are no limits anymore.
Looking at the Kingston Cherry sweaters in the puck drop photo, all i notice is how awful the St Michaels Majors redesigned uniforms are. :(
The Wild's unis look great. Green, glorious green! Now it's the Stars' turn to bring color back.
The only thing I would change on it is the same thing I would change on their red jersey- that shoulder yoke stripe that seems to serve no purpose but to add clutter.
On the Kingston jerseys the 3 buttons down the front spell out "KKK". Is that a sponsor...or what?
hey chris ----i'd been waiting for the flames' third for ages, and when it finally came out i was sortof devastated (i wanted a true third, not a retro throwback). turns out that they don't make that jersey in womens sizes and currently have no plans to.... a total devastation to me.
then i realized that almost NONE of the league's third jerseys are offered in women's sizes. total slap in the face.
i'd like to give that fact some publicity if you wanted to do any of the research on it or at very least post something relating to the fact that the nhl store is missing out on 50% of the population where jerseys are concerned....
much appreciated, wi.
Yeah, the Wild's 3rds were designed--like all of their jerseys--to be worn with jeans. They've never seemed concerned with how the team looks on the ice, just whether or not middle-aged women will feel comfortable in them (since the men buy them no matter what.)
Why the 4 shades of green? Maybe the same reason the Vikings helmets don't match their jerseys either.
To Eddie Ray Design,
Kingston's regular logo is The Bruins Hub design with a K inplace of the B. But you'd think someone would relazing putting 3 K's on a jersey isn't the best idea.
How about some concepts, Chris?
Someone is probably in trouble for the "KKK" mess-up on Kingston's uniforms. Just a mess-up though... I hope so.
To Iceman,
I realize that. I was just making a joke while pointing out the "KKK" thing. How could somebody ever think putting that on the front of a jersey is ok??
Did anyone see the bizarre sight of Darth Vader flanked by two Storm Troopers dropping the puck at the Oct. 21st game between Florida and Buffalo?
I love how Cherry looks like a senile old man dropping the puck! Come on, doesn't he?
