Blackhawks Unveil 3rd Jersey!

First, huge win for my Bolts tonight over the Rangers — despite the shutout-spoiler with two minutes on the clock.

As expected, the Chicago Blackhawks today followed in the footsteps of the Pittsburgh Penguins and revealed their new third jersey to be that which was designed for last season's Winter Classic. But there was a twist.

But before that, a video on the Blackhawks' web site served as an unveiling of sorts. We watch Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa struggle to wrap the new form-fitting jersey over their bulky gear. Seriously, it's the worst video I've ever seen an NHL team produce.

Patrick Kane tries on the Blackhawks' new third jersey

Look how uncomfortable he looks. Anyway, beyond that, what do you notice? Check out the shoulders.

New colors for the tomahawk logoThe classic tomahawk logo has been been altered to match the red/tan/black color scheme of the new alternate uniform. This was a feature missing from the Winter Classic version.

I think it brings the whole uniform together quite nicely. I've always been a fan of this particular secondary logo and I'm glad the Hawks have found a way to freshen it up and keep it around for this new look.

The Blackhawks have also announced a 12-game schedule in which the new sweater will be worn. It makes its on-ice debut this Tuesday, December 1 when they face the Blue Jackets.

It sees the majority of its 2009-10 action late in the season, during six games in March. The full schedule can be found on their web site or in the Icethetics calendar found in the sidebar.

One more note tonight, also related to the Central Division.

Icethetics reader Jon writes in to point out something surprising in the Nashville Predators' new alternate uniforms — which made their debut tonight.

Check out the picture below and you'll see a third new logo on this uniform. Specifically, look at the pants. There's a stylized "NP" lettermark there — something we're seeing for the first time.

A new NP logo is featured on the alternate uni's pants

When the jerseys were first unveiled, the players were not wearing these pants so today was our first chance at seeing them. I've yet to see an up-close or high-res version of this logo, but from this perspective, it doesn't look like anything that's currently part of the Preds' design package.

It's not a big deal, but certainly worth mentioning. Thanks to Jon for picking that out. If I learn anything more on the subject, I'll keep you posted.

By the way, a quick note on comments. If you guys want to ask me a question directly — whether it's related to the topic of the post or not — don't bother putting it in the comments. I will read and respond to it only if you email me at icethetics@gmail.com. Thanks!

I really like the NP logo on the pants, looks very nice in my opinion. It's simple.

Great to see Nashville's third in action. Interesting NP they're using.

Now to Chicago...Compared to what they had, this is a real upgrade. Though in a way it looks like an unnecessary addition, the Tomahawk logo is a nice touch, the colours give it a real vintage feel.
What else can I say, it's the rare case where a Black Third Jersey looks amazing.
Overall, 5 Out of 5.

Is this it? Is the Third Jersey Class of 2009 Complete? If so I wonder how long it will be until we see updated third jersey rankings?

Love the new NP logo along with the red tomahawk! Good news all around today!

The video looks bad because its suppose to have that old feeling to it like back when the Hawks did have those jerseys.

I don't know if the Preds didn't post it on the website, but they did show the pants in several videos. You've got a jersey that was specifically designed to incorporate elements of Original Six jerseys, but they pair it with a modern looking logo on the pants. Its looks weird up close and it really stands out when they are on the ice.

I liked the Preds jersey last night. On TV, you couldn't see the checkered pattern. You could only see it if you KNEW it was there. And in fact, I think the lighting gives it the necessary shade of blue to make it different enough from the base color. I think the designers took this into consideration, so good job to them.

As for the B'Hawks, I actually don't like the tomahawk logo. I don't know why, but to me it looks a bit... cartoon-ish? I'd actually prefer there not to be any secondary logo on the uniform. Aside from that, I think the band across the chest is actually too wide. While I don't want any team to copy what the Canadiens have, I think this is one case where the jersey would look much better if the Hawks HAD used the same band-width as the Habs.

That video made me lose the little respect I had for Chicago...

Great, another logo-inside-a-circle-with-the-team-name. Am I the only person who is getting sick of them? In my mind, the only teams that should have them are Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Minnesota. St. Louis may also be able to get away with it because their execution was so flawless. Don't worry, Columbus plans to release a 3rd jersey next year, and rumors are suggesting that it may feature their hat-inside-a-circle-with-the-team-name. Originality, anyone?

There is another small adjustment to the chicago jersey, and i only noticed because i have the winter classic jersey.. They changed the colour of the collar laces from black to white. I donno, in my opinion i liked the black laces.

also, why on earth does chicago wear their "new" jersey THREE times against the Blue Jackets? Why not mix it up a bit...

Nov 28 · 10:31 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJosh.C.

Sadly, I agree Glen. Chicago's circular is fine (as are the other teams who either pull it off or are wearing retro), but when a non-traditional team like Florida tries to mimic that their lack of originality really shows.

The worst part is, I think there is a very good chance that Columbus will be sporting that circular patch as their third next year.....

Glen, I don't get your comment. What other logo is in a circle, besides Chicago's (which you said they should have)?

Nov 29 · 10:31 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterAlex

I just hate how the Preds' 3rd is a rip-off of the Hawks home jersey

Nov 29 · 11:31 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterChris D

just an update... the blackhawks play the columbus blue jackets, not the st louis blues.

on a personal note, i really liked the black jerseys but these to me are just as good because it shows how much heritage and history the blackhawks have. it is almost like the canadiens trying out all of their old jerseys. whichever route the blackhawks want to take in their third jersey is fine to me. as long as the jersey is primarily black

Nov 29 · 12:45 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterAnthony

I'm neutral on the new Hawks jerseys, but I'm a big fan of the motif on their shorts.

Nov 29 · 12:53 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterheadsigh

The shorts on Patric Hornqvist look much lighter than the actual ones, which gave me pause. The darker shorts work well with it, though. What I don't get is why Chicago gets Hossa, who's coming off shoulder surgery to have to struggle to put a jersey on, involving more moving around by a shoulder joint..

Nov 29 · 1:00 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterMrPsychic

It looked like Toews, Kane and Hossa had just come off the ice from a practice or something when they tried the jersey on. That would explain the look of being "uncomfortable" as just being out of breath.

Nov 29 · 11:10 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterSandro

I can't believe you don't like Nashville's third jersey. Hasn't anyone noticed that the monochrome look really goes with their logo now? The logo of course features blingy chrome and it looks soooooooooooooooooooooooo much better without that ugly yellow colour. The Preds should rebrand based on this uniform.

Nov 30 · 12:35 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterel

I really like Chicago's new thirds. I actually bought that jersey as a winter classic, however i don't think that teams should keep going backwards with their logos. The third jersey design is awesome, but make a modern logo that has a retro feel. The should do something like the penguins did, the pens put their current logo inside of their circle instead of using the out of date penguin logo the was originally inside the circle. The hawks should do the same with a more modern indian head inside the circle as opposed to the old style indian head logo.
Just my opinion, if you want a retro feel atleast keep the logo modernized. I don't know if others would agree with me or not. What do you guys think?

Nov 30 · 2:10 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterGary Punzak

I was hoping to see something a little different from Chicago other than, what seems to be, the prototypical logo in a circle, but it's still nice.

I really like those Nashville jerseys, simple but clean. I like the NP logo as well.

Glen, where are you reading/hearing the rumors about the Jackets' 3rd jersey logo? I'm an avid follower of the team and have not heard anything about what the logo might be. I'm just curious about where you're getting your info. Many of the fans I've talked to want to have some sort of cannon as a logo.

Nov 30 · 7:19 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJeff E.

I actually liked the video, it was made that way to make it feel like back in the 30s or something, when people stood awkwardly in front of the camera

(see Mike Ivall Design's comment, he gets it)

Dec 1 · 6:52 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterbossy22

I actually think the Hawks' thirds look GREAT--but only if bought blank. Adding sleeve numbers, back numbers and the captain C or alternate A really clutters up the whole set. It's difficult to look at and takes away from the simplicity that made the original '36 sweaters so awesome.

Dec 3 · 3:15 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterAdriel Gonzalez

laces on the front of the hawks jerseys also changed colors from black to tan. i like it. they should put their regular current logo in the circle if there going to do tht.

Dec 6 · 7:34 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJack

What do you mean great another cirlce logo? The Hawks were the first to have a cirle logo before any of the others teams existed. And the tomahawks on the sholders aren't anything new. They were there before. Check your research.

wow, that video made me feel embarassed for my team. Patrick Kane is a brat. he acts like he's having the worst time of his life. Look at his face in the video. Little punk is what he is. But, the jersey is good. GO HAWKS

I give the hawk's jersey a seven.... and that's on a scale of one to five, so that's a pretty big number.
