Rangers Sweater Leaks — Again
If there were any doubts before, let them certainly be quashed now.
Icethetics reader Sean (presumably not Avery) sends in photos of the New York Rangers new Heritage Jersey he found hanging on a store shelf.
I won't mention the name of the store where the pictures were taken as I'm not interested in getting anyone in trouble. But there were a number of them hanging on the rack (right).
And to be fair, these are pictures of the youth version of the jersey. But you get the idea. It's further proof of the sweater's "retro" design, which will be officially unveiled this Friday — in just two days.
The way the Rangers have been promoting the Heritage Jersey, I'm not sure if it's also going to serve as a third jersey for any indefinite amount of time. It looks good so I'm hoping it sticks around a while.
This jersey was first leaked by Sean Avery back in September. What we didn't see in his lone photo were the details, such as the number and lettering styles.
We've got that covered now (left). And if you're also interested in seeing the special design on the inside of the collar, look no further. It reads "Established 1926" on the back.
Again, these are youth sweaters, so the collar design and jersey material don't match actual Reebok Edge specs, but all the critical design details should be accurate.
Just in case there's any question, I'm told the name and number outlines are in vintage white, not true white. And it appears the number font is the same as the home and road sweaters without the shadow effect.
Despite this pre-release look at the Rangers' newest jersey, I'm still looking forward to seeing it on a player in a game. I'm sure we all are.

Looks cool... hard to tell from the image, but is the player name arched, like the Red Wings?
I was initially disapointed with the design, it has grown on me a bit. I think they'll look good in action. Hope the Rangers wear them often this year instead of the Rbk Edge destroyed classics.
I don't know if this is just something that is due to it being a youth version, But there is no collar tie in these pictures, where the one Avery was wearing has the tie up collar. Like I said, would this just be because its the youth version, or have they ditched the ties?
I too am looking forward to seeing the jersey in action, as soon as I can get my grubby little British hands on one, I will be!
Ryan, it is because this is a youth jersey.
I'm so disappointed in this jersey. It seemed like a lot of people (including me) were hoping for the return of Lady Liberty (still one of the best 3rds of all time), and this is just so boring in comparison. It's barely even different from their regular home jersey. I say the Rangers could have done A LOT better.
Looks great!
It's not that I don't like it, it's just that I find it plain and not much of a change (yes, I know the history behind it).
To Ryan: Yes, the collar is different because it is a youth jersey. The NHL logo doesn't appear lov on the "body" of the jersey on the real deal. Look for the collar Avery's rocking on the real thing.
These look great, although I prefer the match of typefaces ("Rangers" and player name) but the darker blue, vintage white and red are looking real promising. Add the Rangers numbers who, in my opinion, are among the best in the league and you got yourself another solid looking Rangers uniform. Job well done!
I'm curious about the socks and pants that will accompany these. As we've seen, they have a darker helmet.
The socks will probably be identical to the current home set but darker. But I have to think they're going to need at least shells for the pants as well. The vibrant red would just look very offputting when combined with the more subdued, darker blue.
Thanks for sharing the pictures, but you could have at least bent your knees and shot them straight on!
I hate the Rangers. But those are some absolutely great looking jerseys. Note that I am just talking about the jersey though. The damn text based logo kills it. Yes, I know it is standard for the Rangers. But I don't care. Any text based logo on a jersey just kills it for me. I was fine with it when it was only the Rangers because I hate them anyway. But it is becoming a ridiculous trend lately that is ruining some otherwise nice looking jerseys.
I hope the lettering of the player name is vertically arched, as on the home and road jerseys, and not radially arched, as on that youth jersey. That's not a good look on a hockey jersey.
All jerseys for the Rangers have arched name tapes. Maybe I'm not following what you mean by vertically arched, but the arching looks just like it does for the current Rangers home and away jerseys.
I'm and Islander fan, but I'm always envious of the way the Rangers' do their uniforms (except for the Furgueson-era Wiinnepeg rip-offs). This one is no exception, although I think I would have used the team's nickname instead of the city. I'll bet the name plate will be radially arched on the full-size jersey as well, as ithat style harkens "low-tech" retro. It would be cool if they brought out a few guys like Eddie Giacomin, Andy Bathgate, and Rod Gilbert to model these when they are unveiled...
I am so happy with these jersey's!! I am in the minority as I hated the liberty head jersey. Wonder if the authentic will have the patch on the shoulder still...def. a buy for me!
Not nearly as nice as the Lady Liberty jersey.
I really like these jerseys. I never liked the Liberty logo and have been waiting for a new jersey with some retro aspects to it. When I first heard about these, I was a little skeptical, but I think they look great now that I see them.
@ Turk - if you go to the rangers website, there's a list of players who will be at the unveiling tomorrow. a bunch of legends (Leetch and Graves are scheduled to be there) as well as Giacomin and some other, along with a cast of current players. I haven't decided if I'm going yet, maybe I will.
the whole concept is amazing...but theres no replacement for the Lady Liberty in the front and the patches
Since arched NOBs have been mentioned... a picture on the NHL.com front page for the Sabres-Rangers recap has a clear shot of Dan Girardi's back, and it looks like his NOB isn't arched very much at all. Are they just not arching them as much in general? Has this been the case for them since the introduction of the Edge? (Admittedly, I don't get to watch many Rangers games.)
Blue seems to be the new black in the NHL. By my calculations, the Rangers are now the 8th team in the league to have two different shades of blue in their uniforms.
@Turk B
Ferguson did the "Winnipeg" jerseys in New York first. Then he got fired and took the design to Winnipeg after that.
@ Daniel
Difference being that NY has used Blue for...well 85 years now, and it originally was a darker blue, so it'd be pretty hard to accuse them of being unoriginal. Afterall, the wordmark thing seems to have been stolen from them quite often.
If these were Royal blue instead of navy they wouldve been perfect.
@ Ian K
I wasn't passing judgment - just making an observation that I thought was interesting - although, to be fair, the Rangers only started wearing navy blue in 1996, so it's not that historic (unless you consider those Jets-esque jerseys from the late '70s to be navy).
