Rangers Unveil Heritage Jersey!

New York Rangers Drury and Lundqvist sport the new sweaters

The New York Rangers officially unveiled their new Heritage Jersey tonight in front of fans gathered at Rockefeller Center.

Rangers unveil Heritage JerseyThe retro look comes as no surprise to anyone who saw the photo Sean Avery posted on his website in September, but we got a much better look during tonight's unveiling, as seen in above photo of Chris Drury and Henrik Lundqvist.

The new sweater, dubbed the Heritage Blueshirt by team marketing gurus, features darker and more subdued colors than the Rangers' standard palette. The blue is darker, the red is duller and the white is more... vintage.

Across the front reads NEW YORK in red, but in a font more typical of 1920s sweaters and different from what the team currently uses. The right shoulder features the 85th anniversary patch being used on the home and road uniforms this season — but in the "Heritage" color palette.

The surname runs straight across the shoulders, not arched, and the Rangers' retired sweaters numbers are stitched onto the inside hem in the back.

If you'd like to see the full photo gallery on the Rangers' website, here's a handy link. And another. Their website is filled to the brim with all sorts of pictures and other features relating to Heritage Week, which officially kicked off tonight.

I haven't managed to track down any details on whether this sweater will only be used this season or if it will be the new third jersey indefinitely. Also I don't believe a schedule has been released at this point. To be fair, I haven't looked very hard either.

One more note somewhat related to the Rangers.

Their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack will officially transition to the Connecticut Whale moniker effective Nov. 17. The team is promoting Saturday's game as the Wolf Pack's "last." Last we heard, the change was to happen between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Looks like they got things in order a bit early. Thanks to Alan H. for the tip!

Many of the pictures make the "vintage white" look almost like regular white... but I still don't like it, especially since it looks like they'll wear their regular pants with the set (which has regular white in its stripes).

love the jersey but im gonna miss the wolf pack

Nov 12 · 9:18 PM PST | Unregistered Commentermike

Shoot me, but this needs to be the new home uni. Awesome.

I really vintage white, I do, (and it appears that I'm probably the only person on this site who does,) but if you're going to use vintage white, use it with everyone! Don't throw in bright white nameplates and screw the consistency up. Otherwise, solid jerseys though. Like the retired numbers on the bottom.

This has got to be one of the sharpest throwbacks to date. Really though, each team that has unveiled a throwback (Canucks, Habs, etc) has not failed to impress.

The Rangers' though is the kind of Jersey that needs to either be adopted as the Third, or remade as an away jersey.
Pros:
-Nice Touch with the retired numbers on the bottom of the jersey.
-The Est. 1926 on the back of the collar was also a nice touch, they really went all out for a true "Heritage" Jersey
-Really nice to see "New York" on a jersey again.
-Navy Blue a nice change from the Rangers' royal blue

Cons:
-I can't really find any, they nailed this Jersey pretty well, perhaps the pants like what was said above, but that's pretty small. still gets top marks.

Overall 5 Out of 5

Solid jersey, definitely one of my favorites. Just don't know about the retired numbers though. Rather than on the hem on the back, they should've put them on the inside collar. And the Lady Liberty logo as a shoulder patch could've been a nice touch too.

Otherwise, great jersey!

According to the Rangers photo gallery, the jerseys sold in MSG will have special differences from other retailers, such as featuring the anniversary patch, retired numbers in the inside of the back, and the "established 1926" writing on the collar. The weird thing is that the NHL.com shop shows the collar text in the photo preview.

I think it's part of a strategy to encourage fans to purchase the real deal from legitimate stores, rather than resort to counterfeits on eBay. If that is the case, they could have done more. Soccer jerseys have had plastic-encased holograms for a while, and some of the Olympic hockey jerseys had subliminated designs subtly hidden on the sleeves and back.

i like the color but the striping rmeinds me too much of the regular home jersey. bring back lady liberty. it was the only thing i liked about the rangers

Nov 13 · 7:12 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterst4rr

The retired numbers are only going to be available on the jerseys purchased at Madison Square Garden. Also if you go onto the Rangers website in one of the phtos inside the neckline (on MSG exclusive jersey) it will have Established 1926 on it as well. I can not wait to buy the jersey. I do not plan on buying the exclusive one b/c knowing MSG they'll mark it up to like 300 and I don't want the retired #s on the hem line anyway.

This is one of the rare occasions that this has been worth the hype!! I have to agree that this should become the new permanent home uni! This is the timeless look the Rangers need!!

Nov 13 · 9:11 AM PST | Unregistered Commenterpyotir

The jersey will be worn on sunday home games and against original 6 teams.

Nov 13 · 11:33 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterChris Hernandez

Home run all the way. It's just about perfect. The only thing that wold have made it perfect is if it was a shade lighter than navy. Something like the 1991-92 TBTC ones they used. The Rangers are not navy blue; they are royal blue. That said, I still love it and will be buying several. The numbers look great without the drop shadow and invoke memories of the 1960's team. The numbers inside the hem is a nice touch as well.

Oh and can we PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD stop complaining that it's not the 'Liberty jersey'? That abomination is gone. Get over it. Nothing about that jersey said New York Rangers and hopefully this means we've finally seen its demise.

Nov 13 · 11:55 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterSW

Yeah, it's good.

Nov 13 · 1:16 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterG-Man

Based on the leak I was expecting this to be a decent jersey, but WOW did they nail it. I already own both regular Rangers jerseys, but I'll be buying this one as soon as some more funds come in.

The small touches, like the inside of the collar, and inside the hem being customized to the established year and retired numbers will never be seen on TV, but it's a touch that we fans can really appreciate.

Way to go New York, now quick, go show Anaheim and Columbus how it should be done before they unveil theirs officially.

Nov 13 · 6:21 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterIan K

Still think they need to bring back lady liberty as a third jersey or the jersey's with the actual shield logo on the front.

Nov 13 · 6:56 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterReadBetweenTheLines

i love the vintage white. but if they make it they're 3rd nxt season, make it regular white for sure

Nov 13 · 7:28 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJACK

I like it. I was hoping for 'Lady Liberty' to return, but this is very sharp, and more aligned with the overall New York Rangers look. It's also different enough to qualify as a 'true' alternate jersey.

I just HATE that bottom hem. It has kept me from buying a few RBK jerseys (the WC Blackhawks, the WC Bruins, and my Flames home jersey).

Nov 14 · 10:04 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterDave Delisle

The article on the AHL website say the transition from the Wolf Pack to the Whale will occur on November 27, not the 17th.

Nov 14 · 2:09 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDavid

It really would be nice to go back to a straight waistline, wouldn't it? It would solve so many issues with classic styles.

Nov 14 · 2:59 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterkyojikasshu

I really don't get why they went for diagonal text again. They have jerseys in their archives with the primary logo on them. Why can't they use those as vintage jerseys? So instead of "Rangers," we're getting "New York." Oh, my... soooo different!!!

I love the dark blue and the red striping, as well as the red "NHL" logo on the neck. But I'm not big on the diagonal "New York."

I just don't like teams that don't use logos. It's a personal taste of mine. Dallas, Anaheim, Buffalo's, Ottawa's, Atlanta's, and Minnesota's thirds, and the "Vancouver" text over the Canucks' logo, they're all awful to me.

Nov 14 · 4:20 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterHabitant

I think the name is radially arched on the back. (Instead of vertically arched like on their regulars). Look at the shape of the nameplate. A square nameplate would not deform that way from hanging. It is just not that noticeable with Drury's short name. Now, if it were that rookie they had a training camp with the hyphenated last name...

Nov 14 · 8:31 PM PST | Unregistered Commenterslam

About the Wolf Pack, Saturday's game was their last home game. They still have five more games as the Wolf Pack, before the change on Saturday November 27th.

Nov 14 · 8:54 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterBiggie1083

They don't use a crest jersey because those jerseys were just (blank)ing hideous. Nobody in New York liked them. Fans panned them left and right, and Ferguson was so full of himself and how awesome they were that he took them to Winnipeg, where fans hated them.
Would you ask Detroit or Chicago to make a wordmark jersey? No.
Then why ask New York to put a pretty lame 'primary' logo on their jersey?

Nov 14 · 10:00 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterIan K

I'm a little bummed that they took my "Heritage" name concept! Great looking jersey though. Why no love for the vintage white?

Nov 15 · 11:30 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterJerk Store

If there's any team in the NHL that can get away with a wordmark, it's the Rangers, since they've been doing it for most of their history. But seriously, couldn't they have designed a 3rd jersey that looked a little less like their regular home jersey? This just shows no creativity. The Rangers appear to be going down the road that the Canucks are currently blazing with their four different jerseys that all look basically the same. It's just uninteresting. At the very least, they could have brought back their late '40s jersey with the wordmark arched over the number. At least that was a little bit different.

Nov 17 · 9:41 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterDaniel

Watching the game right now and the names look slightly arched

Nov 17 · 4:13 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterJeffers

The Rangers are wearing shells over their pants when they wear these jerseys. The same striping as the regular pants, only navy and vintage white instead of bleach white and royal.

Nov 18 · 7:44 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterGlen

The way their smiling at each other is unsettling. love the jersy tho

Nov 20 · 9:25 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterTaylor

So...why are the retired numbers on the inside of the jersey :(...they should have been on the outside...

Nov 22 · 2:06 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterHills

The "Whale" have released their third jersey. They waited so long to actual design the jerseys, Reebok won't have the actual jerseys ready until mid-December. They will be wearing this jersey, made by SP, until then.

Nov 23 · 1:43 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterBiggie1083

@ Hills

The retired numbers are on the inside so that they aren't making the jersey gimmicky. At the same time, the true fan appreciates knowing that they are there.

Nov 24 · 1:41 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterIan K

@ Ian K

On the Rangers website it says that the jerseys with the retired numbers is a merchandising jersey sold only at the MSG sports shops. The jerseys the players are wearing on the ice don't have them.

On the site there is a coseup of the numbers and it states:

"The MSG exclusive version of the jersey. Available only at the team stores, includes the retired Rangers numbers on the inside hemline."

As a Blueshirt fan, I love these sweaters. They mix all the different styles of Rangers sweaters. The font is from the 1930's. The "New York" is from the 1979 season, when they went to the finals. And navy blue is from the lady liberty sweaters.

Nov 28 · 2:16 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterDeep

new home uni's? nah, rangers will never give up there classics. great jersey tho. like how they did more of a navy than that bad royal. it really look great.
