Stars Seeing Green in 2011?
The Dallas Stars are mulling the possibility of adding a green third jersey for the 2011-12 season, according to Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News.
It sounds too good to be true, but in a brief article posted online Thursday morning, Heika gave us the following tidbits to drool over.
The Stars are currently pondering a third jersey that could debut as early next season, and the early word is that it will be green and it will have an old school NHL look. There's no word yet on whether the green is "North Stars" green or the more traditional Dallas forest green.
The final decisions have not been made, but if the team wants to get NHL clearance for use in the 2011-12 season, it will have to present a finished sweater to the league before the end of December. One highly-place insider did mention that cows and fallopian tubes have already been ruled out.
I've been eager to see Dallas bring back the green sweater ever since they ditched it in 2007. Normally, I would say just throw the primary logo on it — and run away from it (as my boss would say). However, the Stars are in such dire straits regarding uniforms that I'd recommend taking another stab at a brand new logo.
Indeed, the last time they tried this it was 2003 and we ended up with the all too unforgettable "Mooterus." (Hockey fans are nothing if not creative when nicknaming things they don't like.) Still, the primary logo is fine, but if we're going to do an alternate jersey, let's do one.
Which brings me to the topic of conversation in the comments: What do you think the Stars should do with their next third sweater?
By the way, I know the cobwebs are starting to show here on the site and I appreciate you guys not harassing me about it. Moving is a pain, but getting to live/work in Seattle will be worth the trouble in the end. I'm doing my best to stay on top of important/NHL news and notes here on the blog, but some of the other stuff might get put on the back burner for a little while. Should all be back to normal by Christmas time.

I would love to see a team do a kelly-green jersey as a base. We have teal and forest green, but we have only seen the lighter green as an accent color with teams like Van and Dal.
They could always slap the Stars logo from the current thirds on a kelly green, put black and tan/gold stripes and call it a day...
When i hear "old-timey," I envision either a circular logo or a diagonal wordmark. Problem to me is that the Wild have both, and you probably want to differentiate yourself from your previous city.
Seeing D A L L A S from top left to bottom right...I don't know. I'm not thinking it would look right. the Stars logo plopped in a contrived circle with Stars Hockey Club or something....That seems too traditional for a newer market.
What I think could be cool is a kelly-green jersey base. No shoulder yokes. Stars logo used but fade it out/ dull it out so it looks like it's half-vanishing (know what I mean? Don't hype the contrast...almost dull it out...make the lines more jagged instead of meeting perfectly, as it currently does). Then, what I think would be cool is using a mid-chest striping pattern similar to the Habs and the Hawks throwback thirds. Leave it solid on the bottom. Have the gold/tan in a large horizontal swatch in the center and thinner black layers on the top and bottom. Match that on the mid-sleeves, and you could have something really cool without being contrived...
1. It has to be green, preferably forest green.
2. It needs a LOGO the stupid high school-looking name has got to go.
3. It needs to be trimmed in Vegas gold.
4. Black can be used as an accent color - no red allowed
What about a sheriff or marshal as the logo? Either like an actual wild west type figure or just an old west badge shaped like a star? Something that brings out the rough and wild 1800s imagery of Texas cannot be too difficult with the "Stars" name. Maybe two crossed pistols with a sheriff's star between? That could be set in a "retro" circle logo with "Dallas Stars" around it like the Penguins' and Panthers' thirds.
Chris, I went to the Stars game against Philadelphia last year and noticed something strange about the game programs. They had all of the players in black jerseys, but had edited the photos to make the uniforms appear green... I really was surprised they didn't change to green this year, after seeing that last year.
Welcome to the west coast!
Great news! A vibrant green jersey would look fantastic, I'd rather see them pair it with a more yellowish-gold than what they currently use.
Just give it the standard Stars logo and traditional hem and sleeve stripes. And then make a white version of it for the road, mercifully ditching the black ones for good.
ABOUT TIME THEY WENT GREEN!
@ MP- Please, please, PLEASE no circle logo!
follow-up question:
why couldn't the Stars (if they were sold on this black motif) at least use green as an accent on the home jersey? They totally eschewed green on the home...yet the roads have green numbers, green patch etc...green logo on the third. Why totally ditch the green on the homes? Black and a lighter green (kelly or lime) is actually a dynamic combo). Missed opportunity...
Yes, we need more green jerseys in the league, and in sports in general. The Stars have a primary color that isn't black and they should make use of it.
Would love to see them figure out a way to bring back the old jerseys. And by old I mean the ones with the star pattern.
I'd like to see a forest green version of their current primarys, and maybe with a couple of proper arm and waist stripes tacked on as well. That's be the best possible way to go methinks.
Chris I wholeheartedly agree that the Stars are in dire straights when it comes to their uniforms. Those simplistic collegiate, long sleeved basketball jerseys have got to go!
Many people dont know this but during the Dallas Stars inaugural season, they used the same kelly green used by the Northstars until it was darkened to Forest Green the next year. This new alternate is an excellent opportuinity to bring this forgotten colour back. Put the primary logo as the main crest, remove the word dallas from it, add some traditional black and white horizontal stripes (think Dallas' first uniforms) and you've got the perfect jersey. No piping, pit stains, or vertical stripes please!
As a stars fan since 1979 I really wish they would go back to green. The Stars should always be green. It keeps the memory of the North Stars alive. Plus they should never change that "Dallas Stars" logo. The star in that logo is actually the North Star since it was used the final 2 years in Minnesota. Those green star stripe jerseys from the early 2000's were perfect. Why in God's name did they change them? I'm a big believer in "if it isn't broken don't fix it". I Hope this new green jersey has the stars logo on the front, and they eventually make it the full time home and create a white version for the road.
I agree with Adam EDG. No red. I would be interested in seeing something green, gold, and white... with little to no black. The safest bet for a logo would be their primary, but their secondary Texas-shaped star thing wouldn't look bad either.
thats a shame, you'll miss all of us at the Everblades games.
whatever they do.....PLEASE no words (of any kind & at any angle) on the front!!
pay someone a decent fee to design a decent looking logo, i do like the sherrif's star idea tho. oh & they should definitely use the dark green not the bright kelly green.......
I totally agree with Dallas going with green. However, I will go a few steps further. Strike a deal with the Minnesota Wild. Give Minnesota back the "North Stars" name, brand, and history. The N-Star belongs to Minnesota. Not a minor-pro name like Wild. However, Dallas can still keep their Stars brand by calling themselves the "Lone Stars". Baseball's American League has both the Red Sox and the White Sox. So, why not have both the North Stars and the Lone Stars?? As for the uniform colours, Minnesota can wear kelly green with yellow-gold and Dallas can wear forest green with "Texas" silver with a new star logo, resembling a Texas Ranger's badge. There! Problem solved and everybody involved, wins.
I like Andres idea. Although, while I don't care for "Wild" as a team name (Wilderness would have been better. Probably wouldve been shortened to wild as a nickname anyway.) the original Wild logo was great.
@Andre, your post takes me back to the movie Airheads. I'm not sure any team would willfully pluralize a name that is inherently singular. While we're at it, New York Lone Rangers
IIRC, they were initially going to be known as the "Lone Stars" after they moved. I'm not sure how or why that prefix got dropped. "Dallas Stars" sounds entirely too plain.
I still call them the North Stars anyway.
Dallas hasn't had a strong primary logo since they dropped the "N" the last few years in Minnesota, hence the script-and-number look and until proven wrong, I'm skeptical about ever making a star logo work because Dallas, in case the NHL hasn't noticed, already has a sports team with a slightly more famous star...
Personally I wouldn't be surprised if the outline of Texas alternate logo first seen when the franchise moved was the basis for a new primary. Let it bed in for a year on a green sweater as a third, then create a white equivalent and demote the existing black home to third...I can see that working...
Just to give a bit more credibility to the Stars bringing back more green, (although this is only something minor) the home helmets this year feature the fully colored green star primary logo as opposed to last years entirely gold version of the primary logo.
In regards to the nickname I agree that "Dallas Stars" is kinda plain. They should have named the team the "Dallas South Stars". The team went from a Northern state to a Southern state so the name change would have made perfect sense.
Three teams in the past used that name
The Birmingham South Stars
The Memphis South Stars
The Nashville South Stars
I think it would have been so much cooler thah simply "Stars".
In this day and age, changing the teams name is completely out of the question for a pro-league team, let alone two. I say keep the stars name and logo, and I've had some ideas as to a new green template. Take the jerseys used in the ASG in Dallas, change the template to green and Vegas gold, and have gold stars outlined in white on the sleeves and it's a great way to bring back the star shaped jerseys with a modern style. Go back to the primary logo on the front. Hopefully will have a mock up with a link available in a few days.
All of you guys have great ideas and I feel it will be a blend of all of these ideas. I think it would be nice to see a kelly-green, but I have a feeling they might go forest green (although if one looks at their road sweaters they have a nice light/brighter green trim than a forest) so if they went that route that would be great with gold/tan trim. If anyone has ever caught a glimpse of their helmet logo in the past years has anyone seen the one with JUST the star? I feel that it looks amazing and would easily be a great logo for a THIRD jersey. If your going vintage than a nice green (kelly green might be too much which is why I would see them going to a vintage forest even though minnesota has already done it) with that star on the center maybe even some laces on the neck would be nice. I feel that with just the star logo your looking at a sharp, simple, and not too ridiculous (moooooterus) third logo.
Thinking about it more outlandishly they were also affiliated with the Oakland Seals, and Cleveland Barons one with a Teal jersey and the other with a red...lets hope neither one of those "vintage" looks pops up in this new third jersey (I just got chills down my spine)
