Get Ready for Green!

Devils throwback promoThe New Jersey Devils are offering a little sneak peek at their throwback jersey night on their official web site.

In case you haven't heard, the Devils will be wearing their original red and green jerseys this St. Patrick's Day, March 17.

This ad — featuring a sneak peek at the green-injected sweater — just started showing up on their web site, promoting the "one night only" event when the Devils host the Pittsburgh Penguins. It links you to a page where you can purchase game tickets.

That's all we've got so far. I don't think we'll see the actual jerseys until the players step out onto the ice for that game. In the meantime, we already know what it's going to look like — it'll just be Reebok Edgeified.

Not sure if the jerseys will be available to purchase, but the Devils could use the money. They need to re-sign Ilya Kovalchuk this summer and the man's already turned down $100 million.

Thanks to Tom!

It might not be Edgeified. The Calgary Flames throwbacks used the CCM cut and so did the replica's for the Winter Classic. Hope its a sign of things to come

Habs did it first, boycotting the Edge cut that is....with their 1945 throwback from last season. they had the CCM cut and collar, even the CCM logo on the hemline

It won't be Edge-ified, in the sense that it'll have piping and no horizontal stripes or anything dumb like that; it'll be Edge-ified in the sense that Montreal's jerseys are: made to work with the new "system," but aesthetically identical. See also the Oilers' third/home jersey, Boston's jerseys, etc.

I do hope it's a sign of what's to come. No more Rbk Edge. Hmmmmm, if this is true, I'll buy hockey jerseys again(I'm on a self imposed RBK Edge ban). If it's not CCM, I don't want it!

You people need to stop whining about the EDGE cut. They make for much more comfortable jerseys to wear. As someone who owns over 30 NHL jerseys, and at least 10 of the EDGE variety I continue to have a hard time understanding why you blame the EDGE for "Ruining hockey jerseys". They fit better, they're more comfortable, and they're about 30x lighter than the CCM ones.

As far as the aesthetics are concerned. How exactly does a New Jersey CCM look any better than a New Jersey RBK EDGE. Just because some teams (read: Avalanche) decided to overhaul their look doesn't mean you should be blaming EDGE for it. Some teams just took the opportunity of a change in manufacturer to change up their look. For those of you that seem to think RBK forced them to do it, I need only point at Montreal, who despite your constant claims of how RBK makes teams use piping, managed to keep their horizontal stripe unchanged.

God, you people are never happy.

Put a Replica RBK Football jersey side by side with a Replica RBK Edge Hockey jersey and it looks the same(a long sleeve football jersey) why does the Hockey jersey have slits on the sides? My CCM Replica NYI Mike Bossy #22 has sewn on lettering. The RBK Edge Replicas have that fake sewn on look but its actually heat pressed lettering .Hockey jerseys are not meant to be tucked in, like a football jersey or a baseball jersey. On the Authentic RBK Edge jersey(my wife owns a Pens #29 Fleury one) why does it have rounded bottom hems? It looks like a "Onsie" that I put on my 4month old baby(all its missing are the buttons on the bottom of it). That's why I don't like them. Sure it's my opinion only BUT........

A New Jersey Devils throwback would look better in the CCM cut because they dont have scooped hemlines that make every team with horizontal stripes look like their wearing diapers. Im surprised an owner of as many hockey jerseys as you would favour the edge. What with their cut hemlines, cheap materials, and screened printed shoulder patches.

If there was ONE good thing about the Devils during the "Mickey Mouse" era, it was their classy red and dark green uniforms. Many traditionalists like referring to them as Christmas unis. Well, the Red Wings dark unis have as much of a Christmas theme to them as well. It's nice to have variety and simplicity in colour schemes. What the Devils have now may symbolize their Cup-winning years, but their uniforms look far too generic. Red and black should only go as far as Chicago and Ottawa - that's it.

P.S. The Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA have gone back to their dark green and red uniforms.

I'm glad the Devs are doing this, but I much prefer the white jersey with green and red accents. On the dark red, the green always looked muddy and almost black to me anyway. It's not that whacky or bold.

I also think the Devils missed the boat to host a game in white because that's a gimmick that a lot of guys in their late 20's, 30's , 40's etc. would soak up because that's how they remember the game (i'm 27 and personally fine with it being darks at home). Imagine the Devils hosting the game in white...you'd have a better looking jersey on the Devils, and it would be a legit throwback to earlier times. The Pens could bring their black/ vegas gold or the baby blue. Either way would be fun.

The Devils legitimately don't think. I told my Devs buddy 2 years ago that it made no sense not to run the red/white / green jersey again as a third. It's part of their history. It's not new and ugly. There's so many reasons to do it. You would think they'd have people with a brain working there. There's a huge Italian population in NJ. You can rock that for Italian Heritage Day / Week or whatever. You can have a 12 Days of Christmas Promotion and wear 'em then. You have St. Pats. It's just such a slam dunk. Can't expect much from this sad organization. Good start though. Go Rangers !

No, the Edge jersey isn't the same, it's a very different cut that fits completely differently, and is much less comfortable. The difference in quality is remarkable. Even the "authentics" that junior league teams use fall apart much quicker than CCM, SP, or AK models, especially with the numbering and logos.

The heat-pressed alternates that exist now are an abomination. There is no excuse for them, considering people have paid $80 for a replica (that costs roughly $10 to make) with stitched numbering, lettering, and logos for decades. The only reason for these terrible alternates are a cash grab.

as for being forced, it stands to reason that all of the teams were told that certain things wouldn't work, or that certain designs would be more popular than others. What other excuse could be had for the massive jersey changes for Pittsburgh, Ottawa (who wear the same jerseys as Pittsburgh), Edmonton, Florida, St. Louis, Nashville, Calgary, and Tampa Bay? How about the teams that attempted to keep their look but made changes in order to do it, like Philadelphia and Minnesota?

There is no other explanation other than the teams were told one thing, and only because of certain teams refusing to change anything (Montreal, Chicago, Detroit, Rangers, New Jersey), teams now have the freedom to push the envelope.

The whole futuristic Edge look has caused such a backlash in the tastes of Hockey Fans that we now have a throwback craze, and only because of those Original Six teams do we have that.

Did Reebok force anybody? No. Did they persuade a lot of teams? Absolutely.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that more than half of the teams just so happened to opt for the same awful template featuring idiotic vertical piping and diaper hems. That's what Reebok wanted leaguewide; fortunately some clubs resisted, and they all rejected tucking them in.

'We're RBK and we're going to put our stamp on hockey'

No thanks.

Morgan, lighter material != cheaper material. I will grant you the shoulder patches, but those are only on the replicas.

And only the replicas have the slits in the sides.

Fit and comfort are biggies. I have never been tempted to wear a hockey jersey other then to a game with the CCM ones. They're baggy and look like crap on me. I like the fit of RBK ones and might actually wear one outside of a game if I had the money to get one. I've tried 'em on and like them though. The hem is silly, but hardly the end of the world. The hems do exist for a reason, they're there so that players can have the length they're used to from wearing way oversized jerseys without constricting movement. Hockey jerseys didn't used to be as long or as loose then the CCMs got by the end of their use.

Also, you can get sewn on lettering for the RBK replicas too. You just have to buy from a retailer, not the NHL. The NHL has never sewn the lettering on any replica jersey, they heat pressed 'em on the CCMs too. It's the independent shop owners looking to add that extra something for the customer that do that, and if the NHL could stop them they sure as hell would, as it devalues the much pricier authentics.

Completely in agreement with Jeff and Ian on this. The basic template of the Edge jerseys is very good, its just small details and design choices that bring them down. I've heard players say they like the mobility the "baseball cut" hem provides them, and by all accounts the lighter material, which keeps players drier, is preferred over soaking wet cotton. That said, there are some Reebok cues that I wouldn't miss if they magically disappeared. Piping is just silly, and ruins otherwise okay designs like Carolina, Florida and the Buffalo third. I'm also not wild about the narrow stripe along the front-inside of the Capitals sleeves. But in general, I think a lot of the third jerseys have proven that, for the most part, ugly jersey designs are caused by ugly design, not Reebok's template. In my humble opinion, some of the best jerseys in use today take full advantage of the modern look of Edge cut without descending into busy minor-league cartoonishness. I'll take Ottawa, Pittsburgh, Calgary, LA and San Jose primary designs over the same-old-same-old blandness in the guise of heritage of original six or the too-busy looks of the Isles, Minnesota and Nashville. Also, Dallas needs to stop pretending they're a college basketball team. Ditto for the Wild (baseball) and Thrashers (football) thirds.

cannot wait!!! about time the devils got an alternate

I don't get the bitching about the RBK jerseys. I much prefer the feel of that material on my arms (worn overtop a T-shirt, usually) to the CCM stuff. Much softer/smoother.

Feb 10 · 5:21 AM PST | Unregistered CommenterDoogie2K

Yeah the material might be cheaper cause its lighter but it looks ridiculously cheap. I own two replica edge jerseys and in spite of them only being washed once or twice they are literally falling apart. The mesh panels are torn and wrinkled while the threads of the supposed water resistant material are coming loose and sticking out making the sweater look fuzzy and worn out. The slits are only on the replica's yes but whats the point of them? They look ridiculous and amateurish. Then theres the brilliant idea of having a jock tag on the front that takes a long time to remove if you want to avoid damaging the jersey. I own 12 jerseys in the CCM cut and when i put one side to side with an Edge the jump in quality is apparant. The replica's of the CCM cut look almost good as the authentics.
