B-Sens Sport Ottawa Throwbacks
The AHL's Binghamton Senators hit the ice last week looking about 100 years old — at least as far as their uniforms went.
On Saturday, the B-Sens wore striped specialty jerseys that paid tribute to the original incarnation of the NHL's Ottawa Senators from 1930s — complete with the barber-pole stripes and the big O. While wearing them, the Senators beat the Rochester Americans 2-1.
For the record, I would've posted this sooner, but you may have noticed the All-Star jerseys took center stage this week. So we go from super-futuristic to super-old today.
The game-worn sweaters are currently up for auction on NHL.com by MeiGray.
So the question is this: Should we expect to see these in Ottawa at some point to come? And while I can't answer that for certain, I can tell you the SENS jersey is going away.
Multiple sources suggest that a new alternate sweater is in the works for the Senators, being prepared for a 2011-12 launch. Many fans have been pushing for a throwback jersey for years, especially concept designer Jacob Barrette. His design is absolutely outstanding.
It's unknown what the new third jersey would look like, but I do hope they avoid the B-Sens' throwback. The Montreal Canadiens did something similar for their 100th anniversary and it did not turn out well. It's fine for a game or two, but let's not make a habit of it.
There were a couple of links I forgot to include when I posted this yesterday. First, the Ottawa Senators posted a photo gallery on their website from the Binghamton-Rochester game. So if you want to see more, that's where to go.
Also, the blog Sens Town did a write-up on the specialty jersey in advance of the game last week. They express their disappointment that the farm club beat Ottawa to the punch on these throwbacks — among other complaints. But the way I see, Binghamton was a test market. Say what you like about the NHL, but at least they don't go all willy-nilly with the specialty jerseys — regardless of what charities may benefit. Structure is good. My two cents.

I'm sorry Chris, but I disagree. This is a fantastic thing for a third jersey, especially for a team with the tradition of the Ottawa Senators. Hell, it's a major improvement over what they are wearing, I can tell you that right now.
THE GOGGLES! THEY DO NOTHING!!
I would have gone with black helmets and bleach white, but for a one-off game, not bad at all.
The Helmets dont' match! ewww! I mean, I know the original Senators didn't have helemts in first place, but... atleast those helmets could have a little red and black on them.
dont look now, but the chicago wolves are wearing some awful jerseys tonight....for a good cause, but just awful
The Ottawa 67's were able to rock a similar jersey for the longest of times. I think the Sens should wear something close to this for a future Winter Classic when Lansdowne Park reopens a CFL venue for the team to play in. I think the Sens should wear black at home, white on the road and have something red with the "O". Either way, Go Sens Go!
I love the concept 3rd but to me add the shoe strings to it and even u can copy the jesrsy with kinda the ottawa 67 look it will give it a modern and throwback look I can't design to give u guys a kinda look so if any designer out there tht can due that I will be appreciate.
I'm in the minority, no doubt, but I think they look good. And good riddance to the "Sens" childishness.
Like the Habs barber pole jerseys, these could be great if they just reduced the overall stripe count drastically. I think something along the lines of what the Flames will be wearing at the Heritage Classic this year.
I will personally lead the campaign to have a gold statue of Cyril Leeder erected if he puts the Sens back in full barberpole.
Then again, I am one of those who would like to see the return of 1910s sensibility to NHL sweaters. I'm so committed to this cause that I'm even making myself a Cobalt Silver Kings sweater!
I read when RBK EDGE came to the ohl the 67s planned on going back to the barber pole but rbk said no i like the modern clash they wear now, my dad used to wear the barber pole when he played for the 67s
Sometimes they're retro for a reason. I like the idea of throwback jerseys but these are awful.
IMO the Ottawa Senators should've reserved these unis for a special occasion like a Heritage Classic. For their farm club to wear it first during a non special occasion, to me it kinda takes away any element of surprise and anticipation for any future Ottawa Senators planned throwback jersey for a Heritage Classic or a future anniversary tribute jersey (ala Canucks), but anyway this is just my 2 cents on the subject, those unis do look very cool though.
I think it would be a great idea for a Heritage Classic for 2015 to feature the Ottawa Senators VS Vancouver Canucks to take place in Ottawa. In like a tribute to the 1915 Stanley Cup series, the Sens of course would wear throwback unis like these, while the Canucks would wear Vancouver Millionaires throwback unis similar if not identicle to those that the Vancouver Giants wore the other year, now that that the Canucks own the trademarks to those sweaters as well as the name Vancouver Millionaires.
I agree with NEV, if the 67s can pull it off, the sens certainly can. Frankly, anything is an improvement over their current monstrosity of a third.
As an avid jersey collector, I am waiting for the Senators to go with the O design that they accidently put up on the website. Until they get something new, I won't touch the SENS 3rd or any variation of the current Home or Away jersey. It's time for the O. This Freddy Kruger look has to go and I hope it never rears its sickly head on an NHL ice rink. If they keep this up, the Senators will join the Stars, Panthers, Lighning, and Red Wings as jerseys I will never own.
It has to be said that the modern NHL Ottawa Senators franchise is turning 20 next year. Interesting what the possibility are with this.
Glen, I agree. Of course, I've stated my rather low opinion of "vintage white" before in past comments. In this set, had they gone with matching equipment, I could almost... ALMOST... let it slide. Maybe throw in some canvas-colored pant shells for good measure... I'd almost say make the helmets leather-like brown, except after seeing the Green Bay Packers try that this past fall with their throwbacks, it'd be better to go with a black or red lid.
Personally, I like Jacob's design. Understated, clean, with a nice traditional look without going overboard. Maybe the Sens could celebrate an anniversary (the nearest meaningful one would be the modern franchise's 20th) by breaking out a version of the barber-pole jerseys for a game or two.
Whatever happens, lose the SENS jersey. Put the O on the front, put the red and white stripe down through the middle, and make it the third. Done. Easy and respectable.
Jailbreak!!!
ugh...these barber pole designs are just hideous. There's a reason they stopped wearing them in the first place. And vintage white has officially jumped the shark. Hard to advocate for the return of bright colours while also pushing these sweat-stained whites. Want to make a distinctive jersey? Make one whose primary colour is something other than black, red or blue. Sad that the Sharks and Flyers are the only NHL teams doing so with their primary darks. Kings should bring back the purple or gold as a full time third. Dallas desperately needs a green. I don't like their Winter Classic jersey, but it would be nice if Boston experimented more with brown or gold.
Those are horrid.
I happen to like these throwbacks. If you think about it these are pretty much what the original Senators wore back in 1917 so they pay tribute to the past. I am however in agreement though that this isn't something the Binghamton Sens shouldn't have worn though. They should have saved this for the "big club" to have worn for something like the 20th anniversary/Heritage Classic.
The other nice thing about this jersey, it's nice to not see the M&T banks logo on a "vintage" sweater.
Also check out on the Binghamton website, they are having a "Police Night" (tonight the 16th) where they are wearing yet another speciality sweater. (w/all proceeds going to a Police Foundation)
Seriously, this needs to be made the full-time third for the parent club! The current "SENS" sweater sucks.
Please bring back the old 2D profile logo or use the new 2D one.. Please! These are as bad as the SENS jerseys, lol. Will this team ever get it right?
Minh, that's hilarious!!!
