Hurricanes Ready for "New Storm"

Carolina will unveil overhauled uniforms on June 4

The Carolina Hurricanes just officially joined this summer's new uniform fray — as reported in our NHL JerseyWatch series. The club confirmed today it will have completely new home and road uniforms next season and announced plans to slowly reveal teasers every morning over the next 10 days beginning tomorrow.

They did release this image this morning.

Already I like it. If that's the new font and the collar is solid black, these are steps in the right direction.

Preview photos to be revealed every morning

Ten days. That gets us from now until Sat., June 1. Then the Hurricanes will unveil the whole kit at an event on Tues., June 4 at noon. Wait, that date sounds familiar, doesn't it? I seem to think there's something else going on in Dallas.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the Hurricanes are just trying to stress me out now. The Dallas Stars have already scheduled their logo/uniform unveiling for the evening of June 4 and I'll be on an airplane headed that way just as the Canes do their big reveal. If ever there was a reason to pull my hair out.

So while I'll be able to share one unveiling with you guys live, for the other, I'll have to be very late to the party. According to Carolina's Twitter feed, this scheduling is a "coincidence."

"New Storm" unveiling requires special invitation

In their press release, the Hurricanes said an invitation is required to attend the June 4 event at PNC Arena but that you can enter for a chance to win an invite.

They're referring to the redesigned uniforms as "New Storm" which is on the same level as "BlackArmor." Here's what they're saying about it right now:

This marks the first significant uniform alteration — from the home and road sweaters to the pants to the socks — in the team's 15-year North Carolina history. The team's primary logo and colors will remain intact. Beginning Friday, May 24, teaser swatches of the new uniforms will be posted each day. Follow the team on Instagram for a first look at each day's teaser image.

If you're not on Instagram, bookmark this page for the next 10 days to keep an eye on the updates. Of course I'll have them here on Icethetics as well.

New look questions answered via Twitter

Following this morning's announcement, the team took some time to answer fan questions on Twitter. I'll do a quick rundown of all the details of this unveiling, including those Twitter answers.

  • New uniforms will be unveiled on Tues., June 4 at 12pm ET.
  • The logos will NOT change.
  • It's not just the sweaters. The whole uniform is changing — including socks and pants.
  • Teaser images will be posted to Instagram every morning at 10am leading up to the unveiling.
  • The jerseys will be available to purchase in September.
  • Sharing the June 4 date with Dallas is a "coincidence" and not the result of the NHL or Reebok meddling.
  • Apparently, the new look is "a whole lot of awesome."

Time for you to chime in. Are you excited about the Hurricanes' plans to overhaul their entire uniform?

I'm a season ticket holder in Charlotte, whose jerseys will be changing as well and should fall in line with the new Canes. The warning flag stripe and silver accents are supposedly gone. The new ones are supposed to be lace ups. Charlotte will not be using the black alternates again, and Carolina will stop after their 2 year NHL requirement is up. I think that font sucks. Too Capitalish.

The logo is the biggest thing that needed changing.

So the question is: aside from changing the logo and colors, what else qualifies as a "significant uniform alteration"?

Well, it would appear they've ditched the piping around the yoke. That's a plus right there, as it only makes sense to have that piping if the shoulders are actually a different color than the body of the jersey.

I think i'm the only one who liked the Canes' Current(Old) jerseys. sure the piping wasn't that great, but i like the Red, Black, and Silver and the little hurricane flags at the bottom. I hope they don't change it up TOO much.

If they are changing the pants, I hope that means black. I have never been a fan of any uniform set that was head-to-toe one solid colour. Yup, I'm looking at you Vancouver Canucks and 1980's Calgary Flames...

If it makes you feel any better, the Dallas unveiling should be more exciting and better because there will be a whole new look, logo, everything. Carolina is just showing new jerseys and that is all. Flushing toilet logo to remain unchanged.

Two weeks ago we suddenly lost our mom, we live in Raleigh -- hopefully this will ease our pain. I will be checking in for the next ten days to find out.

The uniform change for the Canes is something of a tragedy to me. I think the sweater design is one of the best in the league. Despite the very little changes since 1997, I'll always have a special place in my heart for those jerseys. Yeah, the red/black/white thing is overused in the NHL, but I think the Canes do it perfectly, even slightly better than the Devils. Can't say much for what we have so far, I don't have anything much against yoke piping when the shoulder and body are the same color. Though, if done badly, I am pretty much turned off by piping in general (a la the current Sabres blue jersey).

As for the logo, I'm glad it's staying. I love it. It's epic, pure and simple, and goes along with their now-old sweaters excellently.

About the event, it just adds more to be excited for. The summer makes for a lot of jersey and new identity unveilings to look forward to, the events that will determine the future of the faces of the teams. As for this one, I'm glad I don't have to wait as much. In fact, it'll probably make waiting for the new Stars jersey even easier, I think.

So Carolina at Noon eastern and Dallas at 8pm eastern, it can be done
Hope you haven't bought your ticket yet

Jes, I know what it's like to lose a Mom. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

@ Possum: Do you have a source to back up your claims? How are we to believe that without evidence?

I'm a caniac and can't wait to see more! Hopefully the white jersey will have more red than the last 2, or maybe even red and white versions of the black alternate. I'll be upset if they loose the storm warning belt!

May 23 · 9:38 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterKris K

As a Canes fan, I always liked the flag stripe. If they're indeed losing it, I hope it winds up as a side stripe on the pants. Too few NHL teams have interesting pants. At least add some striping, you're getting the things custom anyway! Add some interest, teams like the Rangers know what's up.

And yeah, black pants would be nice. I'd be scared of winding up too close to the Sens, Hawks, or Devils, but it's useful to break up the elements of a uniform, I think. On the other hand, the white jerseys with the red pants are really sharp as is, with lots of crisp white and bright color at the same time, an effect you really don't get with black pants.

Anyway, I'm curious. And if I don't wind up liking it, I can always buy another pre yoke stripe jersey on e-bay.

I actually really like their current look, but hope this new set will be even better.

May 23 · 11:05 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMatt Marczel

I think that Carolina would standout a lot more if they went with just red and silver. It sounds like they will be even more red black and white than they have been and will be more like a lot of other teams. The silver gave them an identity that everyone else didn't have and now it sounds like that and the Hurricane stripes that they have been known for since they moved from Hartford will be gone. I think the update will be an improvement but I think they should have gone with red and silver since nobody else uses it.

So that puts 13 or 14 teams that are removing themselves from the Reebok template. Are you paying attention Reebok??

May 24 · 2:54 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDerek M

I have heard the same things as the user possum. The canes are 100% getting rid of the flag logo and will use the black jersey in the NHL for one to two more seasons... the checkers are getting rid of their black jersey now.

I am told that the canes jerseys are lace ups and the checkers are not. The jerseys are said to look very similar to the team canada jerseys with an additional black stripe. No shoulder logos on the canes jerseys.

@Brian, don't believe it. Doesn't matter to me. See you back here after it happens.

May 24 · 2:35 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterpossum

Derek, there is no one "Reebok Template". There were something like 8, and they allowed a great deal of customization. The teams with very traditional striped jerseys were using a "Reebok Template" too.

Ultimate responsibility for bad jerseys lies in the front office of the teams that wear them. The edge jerseys were only unable to support two designs- the mountain yoke on the Colorado jerseys, and the star of the Dallas jersey. There were teams like Boston that made their jerseys more traditional, and there were a lot of teams who kept their jerseys entirely or mostly the same. The option was always there.
