Never-before-seen logos appear on Stars' mobile app
The Dallas Stars may have leaked their own logos tonight. Oops!
The logos aren't scheduled to be unveiled officially until June 4. But it appears the Stars themselves are responsible for an accidental leak, by way of the Wallpapers section of their own iOS mobile app. The images have since been removed, of course.
A user on the HFBoards web forum named "Zrhutch" posted what he says are screen shots from the app. Zrhutch is Zach Hutchison, who emailed me tonight to confirm he was among the first to spot and post these images. He made sure to grab them for us all to see.

Now that you've seen them, what do you think? It's hard for me to doubt they're the real deal considering they showed up on the team's own mobile app. Are you surprised? Impressed or disappointed? Personally, I'm still formulating an opinion. Gut reaction is good though.
By the way, I would've had this news on the site sooner, but see there was this little breaking news event in my neck of the woods that kept me at work all night. (My contribution to our coverage tonight if you're interested.)

My first thought is - Is this really the best they could come up with? It doesn't look much better than the current logo. If I'm not mistaken, this seems to be similar to a concept on Icethetics.
It's not terrible, but I'd much rather see them go with their current Stars logo (but actually use it)
Green, black and silver? Will definitely be unique.
I love that logo. The original star own its own would of been bland, and I never liked having the teams city name in their logos (Vancouver, Anaheim).
Two birds with one stone
OT Seattle comment: So that's what you do up here? Seems like a lot of the KING people are into hockey. Wonder what the connection is.
I like it, as far as logo refreshes go. It's way above the Buffaslug in execution. The omission of the 'STARS' word is great, it makes the logo more compact and is easier on the eyes. It's no longer a wordmark hybrid.
Will miss the gold, but Dallas still retains a unique color scheme.
The Leafs, Islanders and Rangers are obvious exceptions exceptions to my above posts. New York and Toronto are in their logos, but Anaheim and Vancouver is just tacked on
M: That is what I do. We need our own NHL team up here!
Totally agree with you, JL.
Uninspired. Looks like a milquetoast version of the Starbucks logo.
I thought they were going for a classic, timeless look. I think this looks like a logo that would appear on the cap of a baseball team, not the front of a hockey jersey. To me, it looks like they have gone the route of the Houston Astros with a simple logo and a secondary logo in a roundel. This is my opinion but damn, they could have done much, much better than this. Hopefully the uniforms will look good and Chris, hopefully you will enjoy your trip to Dallas.
I actually like the logos. I was expecting something much worse. But silver instead of gold? Why did they have to drop gold? Dallas fans on HFBoards were saying that the roundel is actually ment to be a shoulder patch, and the D-star logo is the new jersey crest.
I like it, but I'm REALLY going to miss the gold, I mean come on what was so hard about sticking to green and gold =(
If it was a non-italicized logo, the stroke on the D would be vertical and the bevel at the top of the star would be too. I can't stop focusing on the upper left of the logo - the slant in the D is more than the slant of the star (the white/grey edges)
It could grow on me. I like the "Big D" reference. Not sure how I feel about the lack of yellow/gold that's part of their heritage. Does anyone else think the bevel effects on the star make it a bit too much like Columbus' star element?
My first impression: ...eh...not too happy about it, I'm thoroughly disappointed. Didn't they say it'd be green and gold? I mean, it's alright, I guess...I might have to get used to it...but if it lacks gold, I probably won't be looking forward to the uniforms as much.
On the real-or-not side, this seems very legit. It's on the official iOS app, and it's a lot like their current logo. I find it to be very believable. Ad, to be honest, the more I look at it, the more I'm comfortable with it. Hopefully the uniforms won't disappoint. We'll just see what happens.
I have surprisingly impressed by these logos. I think the addition of silver and removal of gold is a great move. I am one of the few that actually like roundel logos for hockey clubs, and this is no exception.
Even though its ANOTHER circle logo, I love the new color scheme. It's unique to the NHL, and it fits Dallas very well. I can't wait to see the jerseys!
Love the shade of green. With the black and silver accents, I think the jersey will look really sharp
Not really a fan of the circle logo, but it seems like a lot of teams are doing it. Maybe it can be used as a shoulder patch like Tampa Bay. The logo without the circle on it's own works but only on a black jersey (center of the D is black). It will be interesting to see how it is incorporated on the actual jerseys.
Let the concepts begin!
Hrmmmm........Green, White, Silver (and maybe black) - que Cedar Rapids Roughriders anyone?

I love the colour scheme and hope (was it confirmed?) that the home jersey is GREEN. I certainly hope the D* logo is the main one and not just a shoulder patch leaving the circular logo to be the main one. That would be a disappointment as so many teams have gone that route lately (Blues, Wild, Blue Jackets, Panthers until they got rid of their 3rd).
I don't mind if only for the fact that it's a huge upgrade on their Basketball-style jerseys. Though, I'm not sure if this logo is an upgrade on their long-time Dallas Stars logo.
I'll reserve full judgement until I see the full uniform.
They really fooled us into believing that their new look would have North Stars colors. At least with the new look, they are moving ahead, and not backwards.
What worries me is that the jerseys in the pictures are the same. The logos are okay, as long as the circle logo isn't the primary. There are way too many of those. But if we still have to deal with the college jerseys after all of this...that organization is just ridiculous
Can somebody, anybody at all, explain what in Hades possessed them to have two spokes of the star flush to the D, and three spokes only partially connected? It's a small, small thing, but that's going to irritate the hell out of me every time I see the logo. Either disconnect them all in some fashion, or make them all flush (my preference), but this half-measure thing just grates. Aside from that, though, I like the color scheme.
eh. the circle logo is better than the star logo. hopefully that is the one they use on the new jerseys. colors are good. really hoping that the new jersey colors are mainly black. that circle logo on a green jeresey would look good. fingers crossed for a SILVER third instead of a black one. (never going to happen.)
It's pretty good, but boy do I miss the gold.
I like it, so long as they use the non-circular logo as their primary. There are enough teams doing the circle with team name thing. Nice upgrade!
Well, it's a small part of the story. I wonder what the new jersey will look like. This logo doesn't provide any hints as to whether it will be cool, or another "mooteris"
My initial thoughts/questions are : 1. Why the silver accent color instead of gold? And, 2. I'm not sure I'm sold on that shade of green. But, overall, not too bad. It's new and modern, but keeps the slanted star.
Ugh . . . I hope the D/Star combo is the logo (which isn't that great BTW) vs. the one with the wordmark around it. And, where's the color? What a HUGE wasted opportunitu to go back to the North Star green/gold (or close to it). I just hope the home sweater isn't black. I'm very disappointed.
That's just brutal.
this is bad, and they should feel bad.
i like the color choices but the logo design is rather meh.
I really like the circle logo as a shoulder/alternate, but then again, I like most circular logos. I feel that they can work in a number of ways and represent so many things in the hockey world (pucks, faceoff dots, etc.).
I dig the primary one too--the simpler design lends itself to branding and replication--but would have to see it on the jersey to see how it would play out with other elements. The lean may make it feel off-center depending on striping, etc., and though I doubt they'll go with apron strings, they may.
I do feel that they could have done something a little better, but overall, it's cool: B+.
I think it's a huge improvement. I never liked green and gold, the silver is the way to go. No word mark, it looks like an actual logo. I'm not a Dallas fan but now I'm excited to see their new sweaters.
It doesn't look like a hockey logo to me
It looks like one of those logos that you can pick from on NHL2k12. I think if the just actually used their current logo it would be so much better.
Absolutely in shock watching the news last night and seeing the Skagit river bridge collapse like that. I was just in Seattle two weeks ago and have crossed that bridge many times. Incidentally, the Blues' TJ Oshie was born in Mt Vernon which is where that bridge is located.
As for the jerseys: I really like the logo but the colours do not seem right for the Dallas Stars. Adding silver makes it look very bland and non-descript. When you see that logo on a green jersey with silver the Dallas Stars suddenly start looking like an NHL All Star team or worse the old San Jose Sharks..... Again the logo is a fantastic upgrade. It's very simple and striking. Just add gold to it and it's gold.
I like the logo. It reminds me of an old sheriff's badge with the circle around it. I also think it looks good without. So, well done. Let's hope for a green jersey now.
I don't think this is legitimate. There are a few things that about this logo that make me doubt the authenticity.
1. The top point of the star looks like it was poorly erased in photoshop, leaving some notches at the tip.
2. The "D" looks like it was cut and pasted over the center of the star.
3. The gaps that the point on the right and the two on the bottom have between them and the "D" are pretty sloppy.
hahaha looks somewhat like the logo I came up with...
I agree with Dilbert above, why not just attach all of the star points to the D? It will still be clear that there is a D in the center of everything... Maybe it'd a subtle homage to their current logo where the points don't meet and form the A in DALLAS?
Overall, it's another bland circle logo that is already played out and is certainly not a "classic" look, but more like a current circle-trend that's on the way out!
I don't know, I don't completely hate it but I don't love it either. Hopefully it'll look good on the new uniforms. Personally I had no problem with the logo, but I didn't care for their uniforms considering how much I loved their pre-reebok uniforms.
I think it's not too bad. Definitely a better initial reaction than I had when they unveiled the current jerseys back at the Reebok redesign. I didn't think the logo needed a change—just a sprucing up. I can live with this. I actually like the non-circular/patch one. I hope they use that one on the front of the new jersey. We'll have to wait and see how the jersey is, though.
This is really good. Much better than the old one by tenfold. This is a modern logo and should be path for other teams to come.
But could be fake and photoshopped. Easily done with iphone.
Not bad, and certainly a step up from the "logo" they have, but it feels like a wasted opportunity. A dash of gold would make it better and just feels like something's missing in the dead space of that D.
I actually like this a lot. It's clean and classic-looking. Hopefully the jersey is that same colour of green; it'd look pretty sharp.
I get the feeling this is a stunt created by the team to get people talking about the rebranding. Sort of like how Carolina is doing the whole New Storm thing. I can't see the people involved slipping now after they spent the last year or so working on this. Feels more like they took one of the concepts that was in the running and instead of it just going by the wayside they re-purposed it for the "leak".
Besides, one of the points in the circular logo touches the inner ring. If it's bothering me this much I have to think it would bother someone on the design team.
My problem is why would they have new logos on the same pictures where they have old uniforms? I think this is fake.
Is the silver a Cowboys-inspired move? If so, the black is a mistake. They could go green with silver and white just like the Cowboys' blue. That would be a smart move and a smart look in my opinion.
I don't love the italicized star - I think it would be better with a straight star and the D italicized to match the angle of the star's points. Overall it's not horrible, and while it is an upgrade from the current dated primary, it's not a real classic by any stretch of the imagination.
The rest of the uniform will make or break the look. Assuming they're wearing a green jersey, will they wear green or black pants?
