Kings Third Jersey Leaked!

During the Live Chat tonight, readers were treated to a leaked image of the new alternate sweater of the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings will officially unveil their third jersey on Saturday night against the Avalanche, but you can have a sneak peek right now.

As with both the Sharks and Senators leaks released in the past two days, the image quality is lacking, but you get the idea of what the sweater will look like. It's black with the new banner-shaped logo on the front. Broad white stripes wrap around the elbows and thin white piping runs from the collar to the wrist.

There may be some silver in the sweater but it's not easy to make out in this grainy scan. The numbering and lettering appears to be the same as what's used on the home and road jerseys.

This is one of those jerseys that I have no doubt will look stellar once it's on a hockey player. A lousy quality scan doesn't really do it justice. I think we'll be pleasantly surprised with what we see on Saturday.

If any of our talented artists would like to take a stab at creating a graphic that enhances what we're seeing here, I'd be thrilled to add it as a follow-up to this post. Having said that, I do have one to share with you right now that I think comes pretty close.

This image uses the JerseyDatabase.com template but I'm not sure it was created by those folks.

I think one thing we're seeing with the new third jerseys is that simplicity makes for a killer uniform. Go with something classic yet edgy so it doesn't feel like we're going back to the Stone Age every time somebody wants to try out a throwback. Vintage is good. So is the 21st century.

Keep in mind that the Kings will officially show off their new duds this Saturday, November 22 when they take the ice against the Colorado Avalanche.

By the way, our final third jersey leak Live Chat will take place Tuesday morning at 11 AM. You'll get to see the Stars' new third jersey just shortly before it gets officially unveiled. Be here!

Flyers Unveiling Third Jersey Tuesday

According to Philly Fan Fare (a sports blog from the Philadelphia Daily News), the Philadelphia Flyers will unveil their new orange third jersey tomorrow night at the "Meet The Team" event for season ticket holders.

Paul Vigna writes that the "new jerseys will go on sale the next day, Nov. 19, at philadelphiaflyers.com, and will be available for the first time in personat the Wachovia Center starting 7 a.m. on Black Friday (Nov. 28)."

Last week I posted the invitation to that event, which featured photos of the new sweater erasing any possibility of suspense. It turns out this will in fact serve as their official unveiling event. I'll try to have pictures here tomorrow.

By the way, I've got some unrelated notes briefly. You can now start rating the submitted logos for the North Division in the IceHL project. I'm honestly trying to get the voting started for the final three logos for the Pacific Division teams, but right now that and the Flashback '98 tournament are taking a back seat to third jersey news.

With any luck, that'll be over by the end of the month and I'll be able to get back to the IceHL, logo tournaments and concept art in full force in December.

Third Jerseys Get Three Wins

Four teams wore alternate sweaters tonight but only three won.

We'll start with the most interesting find of the night. Spencer points out that the Vancouver Canucks are wearing a special logo on their helmets to go with their new third jersey — going all the way back to the team's pre-NHL days.

Look closely. Compare that with the classic Johnny Canuck logo you see here. On the helmet he appears to be wearing a green shirt with blue pants.

I'm impressed if a little surprised the team would do this. Obviously they're hearing the very vocal fans desperate for a return to the classic look.

For the record, the Canucks won their first game with the new alternate sweater, 4-2 over the Maple Leafs.

Anyway, that's not all. The New York Islanders again wore their third jersey, pulling out the 3-2 victory over the Senators. And the Pittsburgh Penguins debuted their alternates with a come-from-behind 5-2 slaughtering of the Sabres.

Isles captain Billy Guerin and ex-Bolt Ruslan Fedotenko are seen in action above.

Unfortunately it was the Montreal Canadiens, who, while wearing their 1945 era sweaters on Centennial Jersey Night, lost 2-1 to the Flyers. The jerseys are white with a heavy blue, red-trimmed stripe around the belly. The numbers and text are red.

Here you can see Saku Koivu in the conspicuously non-EDGE style sweater. It's got a rounded collar and the "CH" logo is located very low on the front so as to be centered on the blue stripe.

I'll keep an eye on the Canucks thing and if any better pictures of the helmets turn up, I'll add them to this post.
