Flames To Wear Alberta On Sleeve?
Tuesday · Aug 21 · 2007 | 12:50 PM PDTJust wanted to keep everyone up to date on a rumor that's been floating around regarding the Calgary Flames new duds. It's been widely reported that the horse head logo with the flaming nostrils will bite the dust in favor of a new secondary logo. Some believe that secondary logo will prominently feature the flag of Alberta in a shield sort of style.
For an example, check out this fan concept that was emailed to me recently.
The designer used the Albertan coat of arms as a jumping-off point in coming up with this idea. Some people wonder whether this would stir up unhappy feelings in the Edmonton Oilers, also based out of Alberta.
As an interesting corollary, the Oilers are also reportedly dropping the secondary logo they've used for the last decade. Word is, the oil man on the shoulder will be gone. Are plans in the works for a new Alberta-related secondary for them too? Should be interesting.
Any Albertans out there? What do you guys think of all this?
UPDATE (5:58 PM): Unfortunately I made the mistake of pitting Flames and Oilers fans against each other. I don't know what I was thinking. Just to avoid things getting out of hand, I'm shutting down comments on this post. Thank you to those of you who posted comments with civility in mind (apologies for closing them down). To the rest, I can live with a few jabs back and forth in good fun, but I won't tolerate attacks of any kind. We're all just trying to enjoy ourselves here.

That's a slap in the face to the Oilers.
That's gay since Edmonton is the Capital of Alberta not Calgary.
No kidding, Edmonton is the capital. It seems the flames would be happy to forget that the Oilers even existed. "There's only one city in Alberta..." right.
Ridiculous comments:
1. Putting the Alberta flag or shield is no more of a slap in the face to the Oilers than the Statue of Liberty on the Rangers jersey is a slap to the Islanders. Calgary is in Alberta and if they want to put something "Albertan" on the jersey, so be it.
2. If we want to follow that inane, childish argument, we could talk about the fact that the Canadian oil industry is based in Calgary, not Edmonton. Yet, Calgarians seem ok with the Oilers moniker on the Edmonton hockey team.
3. As an Albertan, I would love to see either team give a nod to the rest of the province on their jersey. The Battle of Alberta gets the whole province fired up, and there are Flames and Oilers fans all over Alberta.
4. The first two posters should grow up.
The white collar executives live in calgary while the oil workers live elsewhere (ie. Edmonton).

but the statue of liberty isn't in long island . . . Edmonton is in alberta.
Chris, if the Oilers are in fact dropping the oil man, don't you think they'll use the logo from the former alternate jerseys as their secondary?
That would make sense to me. But I can't say for certain. It sure would be a shame to see that one disappear. It sure is a nice logo.
That would be appropriate considering that most of the Flames' best players are from Edmonton.

This seems like something that the Oilers would do, seeing as how they are determined to make the entire league hate them.
It's a great idea, in any case. It would be a great way to promote state/provincial rivalries.
We all know the Oilers are Alberta's team anyways. And not some lame attempt of using a provincial symbol on Cowfairy's jerseys -- the outpost of shit -- is going to change that.
Im from Lethbridge and Im a hardcore Flames fan and its good to see the Flames pay homage to the rest of the province...at least they dont embarass us like the city of Edmonton as a whole. I mean between the potholes and the most ridiculous mall in the world, i kinda wish Saskatchewan adopted Edmonton as their new city.
In my opinion it's Calgarians and their inbred politics that embarass the province. I'm also pretty sure potholes are not confined to Edmonton.

I was born and raised in Alberta until I was 15. (Before I got too rednecked ;) ), and it's so damn amusing to watch people continue to battle it out so strongly in here like I remember them battling it out in person back then.
Even when I visit now, you just bring up the opposite team in one of those two cities and you're likely in for a verbal sparring.

If Edmonton doesn't like Calgary putting the Alberta Flag or whatever it will be (if anything at all), on their jerseys, they should have thought of it first... and I'm an old-time Oilers fan.
