The only reason I didn't vote for the first Mariner's set is due to the close resemblance to the old Seattle Mariners logo. Liked everything else, but the third set looked more professional and stream-lined.
Quick explanation - The secondary logo for my Hartford design are the nautical flags representing the letters H & M (with a slightly altered color scheme to match the rest of the designs).
They're hard to judge because they're not presented in the same way as the other votes were. That presentation really helped me to visualize them as IceHL logos.
In the end, it was a tough decision between Slavo Kiss and Ross Taylor (Two of my favourite designers), but i had to give it to Roccot because the use of colours and the Inuksuk are so perfectly Northwestern.
It's tough because I like some of the color combination used for some of the NW logos, but not the logo itself, and vice versa with some others. A team from the NW should have colors that represent the NW.
Eric Poole for both :x
There are some fasinating logos, but I liked both of his the best.
Absolutely love Micah Loyed's Hartford designs. Great choice of a color combo, similar to the navy and teal of baseball's Seattle Mariners, but just a solid design. Huge fan
Eric Poole - Wow. What can I say. Beautiful design. I love the trident spear with interlocking H and M, reminds me of the H and W of the Whalers log. Colors are a little muted, IMO, but love everything from the font, to poseidon, and especially the trident spear. Great job sir. I tip my hat to you.
Good luck, everyone!
The use of negative space to form the H in Eric Poole's design was just mindblowing. It looks fantastic but isn't something you see right away, such a clean logo and good secondary and wordmarks, got my vote for the Hartford set
Are you only going to show the winner? I would like to see the top 3 or so vote getters if that is okay.
Eric Poole's Mariners set got my vote, for sure. Just overall incredibly professional-looking, and it's got everybody's favorite negative-space H, too! If we had a second vote I would have gone with Jake Bartal's as well. It's another very professional-looking primary logo, but the secondary and wordmark fall a little bit short for me, they look kind of "fat." Also, the primary logo is uncannily similar to Captain Haddock from Tintin.
For the Narwhals, it has to be Johnny Woods, hands down! The way that the logo is stylized is pretty unlike anything we have in the IceHL right now, it's classy and aggressive and incredibly simple, which can't be said for a lot of the other submissions, and I think the league could use a good one-color team, especially if that color is PURPLE! Which the league is also sorely in need of! Well done.
I love Slavo Kiss's Narwhals set, very professional looking logos. How can you not vote for it? it's awesome IMO. My second choice from the Narwhals group is Aaron Bailey's design, I really like the colour combination.
Out of the Hartford Mariners group, my vote went to Matt McElroy's design. His design embodied/incorperates everything that is marine. I probably would've voted for Sean Flaherty's design, but I felt the colours he used were just too bright, but I really liked his logos.
I like the idea of the 3 diamonds incorporated in Slavo Kiss's logo designs for Narwhals. I believe Northwestern Territories is the center of Canadian diamond industry. Canada is now the third largest producer of diamonds in the world. Good idea, well executed logos! Love the colors as well.
Just a few thoughts...
Most of the Mariners designs feature a trident, anchor, compass or ship wheel. Props to Jake for using a life saver and Jon for using both the nautical flags and dock railing. And Johnny for putting the hockey stick in the state border.
Most of the Narwhals designs feature a narwhal (just kidding). The secondary logo by Ross reminds me wa-a-a-ay too much of the Vancouver Olympic logo. Big question on Ben's secondary: Was the image flipped, or is the tusk/horn for the Northwest team supposed to point northeast? I like Liam's hidden hockey stick. I love Johnny's primary and secondary logos.
I like the first two Mariners logos, but the colors are almost the exact same as the Boston Colonials. I like the one with the Canucks style colors. The M shaped as a sail is pretty cool looking.
Kinda wish I had entered this. The logo I drew for the Narwhals I liked a lot but I was so sure that someone was going to do the idea anyways and figured they could do it better.
I think Eric Poole gets my vote for both teams. I can see the Mariners logo being used for a real team, and I think the Narwhals logo accompanied by the purple was a great combination. The purple is the main reason I chose Eric Poole over Slavo Kiss, but make no mistake both were fantastic designs.
Hartford Mariners: I agree that Eric Poole's design is a little too reminiscent of Seattle's design. But there are bound to be some similarities when dealing with a team of the same name. The Hidden "H" is a proper omage to Connecticut Hockey. Eric Gets My vote here
Northwest Narwhals: Ross Taylor's crest is bold, simple and the most eye-catching. Nick Marks' compass is clever. But I got to give it to Taylor here.
Mr.Poole's Mariners primary logo is just fantastic
Kinda hard to see it, but it's like the old Whalers logo, once you see it you can't unsee it haha :P
Johnny Woods logos look like old throwback college logos. They're different and interesting. His Mariners logo was the one I voted on for that team.
From the Narwhals side, every logo is really good. I like how almost all of them have the Narwhal pointing in a northwest direction. I didn't want to vote for any teams with an excess amount of blue in their color scheme, as there's enough of that in the IceHL already. I wound up voting for Ben MacDonald's because it's so unique and I like the color scheme. I do think his alternate logo should be reveresed so it point northwest instead of northeast though.
@ Simon,
To be honest with you I didn't even consider which way the horn was pointing until I saw it on here (I can't believe I missed that!) I was thinking if it ends up winning I might just ask Chris to flip it. I doubt I'll have to worry about that though, some of these designs are unreal!
i wish ross taylor would have used a different colour scheme than the double blue. it is my favourite logo set out of both teams (and maybe even all the other 30 icehl teams) but i do not think another double blue scheme is something the icehl needs.
I'd suggest for the winning entries to be allowed to go back for a revised look taking in some of the c&c. Very few designs nail it on the first try. Especially when the effort put into them in the first place is minimal in some cases.
I'd also like to see some mixing and matching of secondary logos and wordmarks at the winners discretion.
Micah Leyed's for the Mariners and Ross Taylor's for the Narwhals are by far the best in just about every single way.
Hello, I am the Wesley that created the Narwhals logos, and I just want to say that I had fun making my logos, and also that I'm just glad to have my work considered along with the great looking logosets I see on here. Thank you so much, Chris, for this opportunity.
So, I must be missing something, but why is ross taylor's logo being held in such flattering regard. Is there something I'm missing that's subliminal?
I've gotta agree with Vandelay. Ross Taylor does nice work but I'm missing the impact of his Narwhals design. I think the primary is very simple and the secondary doesn't even seem to be in the same style. And I assume it is supose to represent a hockey player on a compass? Huh?
I liked Slava's desing for NN. I can see that being an actual Logo for a team. I like the color scheme. I can't think of many NHL teams that have so much white in their logo. I liked it, something different.
I picked Taylor's logo because I really like the Inuit theme. I tried to do something like that myself but I feel like he really nailed it.
Mariners I say Eric Poole, Narwhals I say Slavo Kiss. I wished both teams used colour palettes that were more original, but the designs are awesome.
Also, just on a side note: Who else thinks Jake Bartal's logo looks like a bearded Ghadhafi? I can't be the only one.
