Final Standings

Tie-breakers: To break a tie in the standings, the edge will go to: 1. Head-to-head winner, 2. Best high score, 3. Best low score.

To keep the next mini-tournament at a reasonable size, we're sticking to All-Star Game logos that go back the past two decades, when the league really paid attention to branding each one individually. In addition, we'll include the generic logo found on every bit of All-Star marketing material through the 1980s. And of course, the tourney will feature the recently-released logos for the yet to be played 2011 and 2012 games.

This gives us a grand total of 20 logos, which have been divided into two groups which are random up to a point. Each group has an equal number of logos from the 80s/90s, 00s and 10s. Higher resolution versions of each logo will be available when voting begins. The voting format is outlined below.

Format

Eligible Logos 20; NHL All-Star Game logos used between 1990 and 2012, along with the generic 1980s mark, will give us an even number of logos for this tournament.

Preliminary Round Just as in previous mini-tournemnts, the preliminary round, in a round-robin format, will last three weeks with each logo facing three others from its own division. Opponents are randomly determined week by week. As with all tournaments, logos accumulate points in the standings based on percentage points won in the polls. (Example: A logo that earns 62% of the vote in a poll collects 62 points in the standings that week.)

Quarterfinals As usual, the Top 4 logos from each group will advance to the first round of playoffs. Group A's #1 seed will play Group B's #4 seed, Group A #2 faces Group B #3 and so on. The logo with more votes in each poll wins and advances to the next round.

Semifinals The winners of the Quarterfinal polls advance to the Semifinals and face the opponent designated in the bracket. The logos with more votes in their respective polls win and advance.

Championship Final The winners of the Semifinal polls advance to the Championship Final. The logo with more votes at the end of the poll wins the tournament and universal bragging rights.

Final

Our next mini-tournament is a little different in that it features a rather obscure Junior A league — the Alberta Junior Hockey League. While it may not be obscure to scouts or Albertans, it is to the rest of the world, obviously.

My goal in launching this tournament is to take advantage of the AJHL's obscurity. One of the drawbacks to our previous tournaments is that voters were already very familiar with every logo going in. Most already had their minds made up before they even looked at the polls. The AJHLToL removes that element.

Voters get to look at these logos with fresh eyes and, unless you're from Alberta, you have no emotional attachment to any of the teams that might skew your selection. Instead, we get a tournament that cuts right down to the basics: Which logo is better?

The AJHL has 16 teams spread across two divisions — North and South — in the province of Alberta. Because this is technically a mini-tournament, there will be three weeks of round-robin voting. Each logo will face three others from within its own division, determined at random. The full format is explained below.

Final

The time has arrived to launch our next major logo tournament here at Icethetics. By a vote of the readers, it has been determined that NHLToSL will be our next theme.

You can read that S in the acronym as secondary or shoulder logos. Since the term "secondary logo" can be a little hard to nail down exactly, a more appropriate description might be "shoulder logos." The logos employed in this tournament are all those found on the shoulders of the home, road and alternate NHL jerseys.

Only 20 teams actually wear a shoulder patch on at least one of their sweaters. Each of these teams will present its best secondary logo in this new tournament, for you to vote on. Below are the two groups the teams have been randomly divided into as well as the details of the tournament's format.

Tie-breakers: To break a tie in the standings, the edge will go to: 1. Head-to-head winner, 2. Best high score, 3. Best low score.

Notes: Standings updated every Monday after all polls close. Tables are sortable by header. Top 4 from each group advance to playoffs.

Format

Eligible Logos 45; The logos featured as patches worn on the shoulders of any NHL home, road or alternate jersey will be considered in this tournament. Only full-time logos in use during the 2009-10 season are eligible. Limited use logos (such as those with anniversary or commemorative themes) will not be included. Since some logos are featured on multiple jerseys, all color options will be included during the preliminary rounds of competition. I recognize that once again this tournament will include some primary logos and that's bound to be controversial, but that's the way it is.

The Basics Although 45 logos will be in play at the start of the tournament, only 20 teams are involved. No team will be allowed to advance more than one logo past the two preliminary voting rounds.

Preliminary Rounds Since some teams have as many as three secondary logo options, two preliminary rounds of voting will eliminate all but one from each team. The first will determine color options. Several teams use the same logo on two different background colors. The second round will pit a team's winning home/road shoulder logo against its alternate jersey counterpart. If any of these rules are confusing, don't worry about them. Just vote when the polls go up.

The Round-Robin By Round 3, each of the 20 teams involved in this tournament will have all but one logo eliminated. Each remaining logo will now face four opponents within its own group, amassing points awarded by percentage of vote won. Four was selected as it fits conveniently between the too-long 5-week NHLToL and the too-short 3-week Third Jersey Crest mini-tournament. Hopefully this will be the happy medium we've been looking for. Each poll will be open for one week, giving us four weeks of round-robin voting.

Quarterfinals Just like the two previous logo tournaments, the Top 4 logos from each group will advance to the first round of playoffs. Group A's #1 seed will play Group B's #4 seed, Group A #2 faces Group B #3 and so on. The logo with more votes in each poll wins and advances to the next round.

Semifinals The winners of the Quarterfinal polls advance to the Semifinals. The logos with more votes in their respective polls win and advance.

Championship Final The winners of the Semifinal polls advance to the Championship Final. The logo with more votes at the end of the poll wins the tournament and universal bragging rights.

Mini-Tournament Format

Eligible Logos 22; The logos featured in this tournament are the crests of NHL third jerseys currently in use (2009-10 season). Graphic backgrounds are colored to match the front of the jersey itself. No sweater numbers will be used in the graphics even if they appear on the front of the jersey.

The Basics To ensure that there are no byes during the mini-tournament, the 22 logos are divided up randomly into two groups of even numbers. This means that Group A has 12 logos while Group B has 10. There is a total of four weeks of voting.

Preliminary Round Each logo faces three random opponents in three weeks of polls. At the end of each poll, both logos are awarded points equal to their percentage of the vote (rounded to nearest whole number). A total of 100 points will be awarded in each poll. Teams are ranked within their group by points, from highest to lowest.

Quarterfinals By popular request, the Top 4 logos from each group will advance to the playoff round, just like a standard tournament. Group A's #1 seed will play Group B's #4 seed and so on as indicated in the bracket above.

Semifinals The winners of the Quarterfinal polls advance to the Semifinals. The logos with more votes in their respective polls win.

Championship Final The winners of the Semifinal polls advance to the Championship Final. The logo with more votes at the end of the poll wins.

The All-New NHLToL!

Icethetics returns to its roots on Monday!

I've been leaving cryptic clues all week, so what do they mean? Glad you asked. We're revisiting what made this site so great in the first place. If you want a history lesson about Icethetics' origins, check the About page.

If you just want the basics, Icethetics was born in 2007 as the NHL Tournament of Logos — a website in which readers like you would cast votes to determine the best logos in the NHL, and other leagues. Starting on March 8, the ToLs are back and better than ever!

Take note you're on a new page. This is NOT the Icethetics blog. This is the new Vote! page where you'll come for all your tournament/voting-relating needs. Currently it's the default page when you visit icethetics.info but that will change back to the blog after this weekend.

With these new tournaments, there will be shorter schedules and tons of polls to vote on at the same time. No more one-and-done polls that eliminate great logos too soon from competition. The best of the best will stand out. So here's how the all-new NHL Tournament of Logos will work:

The Basics

I won't deny that the Olympics gave me some inspiration on how to best present this competition. Instead of all 30 primary NHL logos being randomly thrown into a rigid bracket, a round-robin preliminary round will commence the tournament.

All 30 teams will be divided up into 6 groups of 5, based on conference. The Eastern and Western Conferences will each have 3 randomly generated groups of 5 logos (not the same as NHL divisions). From there "play" will begin in the preliminary round.

Preliminary Round

Each team will face every other team in its own division once, for a total of 4 matches per team, over the course of 5 weeks. A match will be a head-to-head poll featuring two teams. Users will vote for one at their own discretion. At the end of each match, both teams are awarded points equal to their percentage of the vote (rounded). A total of 100 points will be awarded in each match. In all cases, every poll will be open for 7 days.

For example, if Logo A receives 55% of the vote while Logo B receives 45%, Logo A would be awarded 55 points and Logo B awarded 45 points in the standings, and so on with each match. Teams are ranked within their conference by points, from highest to lowest, with the group leaders placed as No. 1, 2 and 3 (similar to NHL playoff seeding).

Wildcard Week

Following five weeks of divisional action, Wildcard Week will allow each team the opportunity to bring back points from the other conference. In other words, every Eastern Conference team will face a random Western Conference team for one final poll before the Quarterfinals. Points will be awarded the same as in previous polls but the key here is teams get to bring in points from outside their group.

Quarterfinals

After each team has completed 5 polls, the top 4 seeds from each conference will advance to the Quarterfinals. The teams with the most points in each division will be seeded No. 1, 2 and 3 based on points within their conference. The 4th seed will be the team remaining with the highest number of points.

The bracket will then be set up as follows: Eastern Conference Seed #1 (E1) will face Western Conference Seed #4 (W4), E3 vs W2, W1 vs E4 and W3 vs E2. Teams will not be re-seeded at the end of the Quarterfinals.

Semifinals

The 4 winning teams from each Quarterfinal will advance to the Semifinals. The winner of E1vW4 will face E3vW2 while the winner of W1vE4 will face W3vE2. The winners of these two matches will take part in the Final.

The Final

Obviously, the winners of the Semifinals will meet for one final poll to determine the true logo champion. The bracket has been set up in such a way that would allow the Final to be made up of two Western teams, two Eastern teams, or one from each conference.

Repeat Polls

It is possible that two logos that met in the Preliminary and Wildcard rounds could meet again in later rounds, however it is highly unlikely as early opponents were selected at random. In the event of a duplicate match, the poll will go on as normal. A repeat of the same result may be likely but is not definite.

Why Change the Format?

I changed the format from previous tournaments for a few reasons. First of all, it provides a ranking of sorts as each logo has the opportunity to garner more points than the others. Also it separates these new tournaments from ones we've done in the past, hopefully providing a more accurate result. (Yes, we're starting with the NHL but there will be more!) And finally, because you guys can't get enough logo voting.

In addition, this weekly format is easier on me, in terms of maintenance. Instead of being forced to make daily updates, I'm only needed once a week, leaving more time to keep up with other aspects of the site, such as the blog, concepts page and jersey galleries (which have been on temporary hold while I get the tournaments re-launched).

Questions?

If you still have more questions regarding the new format of the tournament, drop by on Saturday for a live chat. I'll answer all your questions and I'll also be revealing the breakdown of the six groups! I know you're dying to find out.
