Hershey Gets New Jerseys
As I mentioned last night on Twitter, there is an awful lot going on in the minors these days. Time to get everyone caught up. We'll begin with the AHL and work our way down.
The Calder Cup champion Hershey Bears have unveiled brand new sweaters for the 2009-10 season. They did so yesterday on their official web site — while I was busy with the Wild third jersey leak.
The Bears made the switch to the Reebok Edge style uniforms two seasons ago and were one of the few teams that kept changes to a minimum — HERSHEY placed diagonally down the front of the chocolate jerseys and BEARS down the front of the white ones. Those designs are no more.
The home and road sweaters will now place the team's primary logo front and center, while reserving a new text-based design for the alternate jersey. The new third takes its inspiration from the Dallas Stars' with the city name arched above the player's number.
The Bears have also announced the launch of the new sweaters will take place during their season opener in October.
The make of the jersey has remained the same, but the appearance has changed. Anyone looking to purchase one of the new jerseys can do so on opening night, October 3. As always, fans can customize their jerseys to have specific names on the back.
Thanks to James for the tip.
Moving right along now to the ECHL. The Ontario Reign will play host to the league's 2010 All-Star Game. It was announced yesterday that the logo for the event will be unveiled this Friday at 1 PM EST.
The Citizens Business Bank Arena will play host to the 18th ECHL All-Star Game which takes place on January 20, 2010. The event is sponsored by Reebok. No word on whether the All-Star jerseys will be debuted on Friday as well.
We'll finish up our look at the minors with the QMJHL. As you know the league is switching over to the Reebok Edge uniforms this season. Scotty from Hockeybums tells me the plan is for the league and Reebok to unveil all of the remaining uniforms on September 9. Not a hard date to remember — 09/09/09.
One more item now regarding the London Knights.
The Knights will be hosting the Euro Can Cup in which they and other participating teams will don European-style jerseys — as seen above. It's a rather awful sight. Organizers are hoping for it to be a success. I'm hoping it's not if for no other reason than those terrible uniforms.
You can read more about the event at the London Free Press. If you'd like to punish yourself by looking at more pictures of these jerseys, click here.

Bears jerseys actually look pretty nice to me. The white and black stripes at the bottom of the dark jersey remind me of the Blackhawks home jerseys (except those go all the day down).
As for the Knights' European jerseys... hideous! Too many ads. I'm a huge European soccer follower, so I understand sponsorships and the like. One sponsor on a uniform is perfect. Twenty-four is just absurd.
Can't stand the bears, can't stand their jerseys, new or old, but then I guess that's a bitter Moose fan for you.
That London Knights picture must be from a few years ago. It has Sam Gagner and Rob Schremp in it....
Burkeman, i don't think the actual london knights are playing that sweater, because it's going to feature some knights alumni... It's just for this euro can cup thing...
The Hersey Third sweater looks good, but i do not like the crest on the others, way too many colors that don't match the rest of the sweater.
Thumbs down on the new Bears jerseys. No comment on those London jerseys, it's one of those "anything for a buck" things. Ugh.
"The Bears made the switch to the Reebok Edge style uniforms two seasons ago and were one of the few teams that kept changes to a minimum "
Chris,
I am going to have to kindly disagree with this statement. The Bears absolutely destroyed their jersey set last year! The completely reebokified it with random nonsensical side panels and lines going off in every direction. I know this because it was horrified when i saw one of the more tradition based teams ruin their traditional threads.
I am glad they went back to traditional striping.
Look in their store under jerseys to see what they were weraing last year, sure it has the diagonal lettering, but everything else is a reebok template mess!
I the styles of both the old and new Hershey jerseys, but I think the diagonal names on the the uniforms for the last couple of seasons are far better than the crests. The white background in the primary looks exceptionally weird on the dark away jersey. hopefully I can grab one of the now out of date jerseys for cheap....
Why must the third be Dallas-like????Haven't they learned? Couldn't they use a black version of the home and road instead, just not that?
Hershey's logo is just... just awful. I'd rather they use just the name on the jersey, or go back to the anthropamorthic skating bear logo...
Hershey should always be brown, cream and white! It looked great this jersey is horrible!
I figure their red to match the Capitals, but I still dont like em!!!
The London Knights are holding the EuroCan cup with a team of alumni. None of them will be current Knights players and in fact, Pouliot from the Oilers who played for the Rimouski Oceanic against the Knights in the Memorial Cup a few years back will be playing for the Knights team. Adam Dennis will be playing net for the Knights as well. I personally, being from London, am not going to the tournament, but they did these jerseys up for this tournament - probably to embrace european hockey. I dont really believe its actually a cash grab...and I doubt many people from London will actually buy one. Its just a fun tournament and a good opportunity to bring some people from some different countries together. Darren Haydar and Daren Machesney will also be dressing for the London team, neither of which ever played for the knights. There will be a team from Munich Germany, Zug Austria and another called the Liwest Black Wings from Switzerland I believe. And I know the knights beat the Black Wings 7-2 just today.
Thumbs down on the new jerseys. Their old ones were great. That logo is hideous.
to the Knights jersey: Now thats what you call a race car number
Agree with everyone-- Bears are pretty much my hometown team, and the problem isn't the jerseys, it's the logo. FAIL.
The worst part is they never should've ditched the old school bear with the leather gloves and the strange oblong oval shape. I think it's safe to say that I'm not the only one who wishes they went back to the original logo. Tradition, Doug Yingst-- Tradition!
wow. i actually really like those Hershey jerseys.
Especially the alternate. they pull it off better than Dallas.
I like Euro style jerseys... maybe it's just me!?
I really like the Bears' jerseys. The logos/text on them... not so much.
The Bears jersey design is fine; the logo just looks amateur. Should be brown instead of maroon, though.
At least it's not black.
Not surprised the Bears changed their look (4th change this decade alone, anyways), but I am surprised at what the new ones look like. The logo they adopted when they moved to Giant Center in 2002 has bever been as well recieved as the classic crest. The new logo first appeared as a main crest, then was relegated to the shoulders, then in the Edge redesign, it was conspiculously missing from ALL 3 jerseys, yet the classic logo was on one shoulder.
I thought this redesign was going to be the official purging of the new logo, but guess not, it's back storng as ever. The new jerseys aren't amazing but aren't horrible, either. I'm undecided on them.
In a related story, I've heard rumors my hometown Amerks will be reverting to the pre-Edge designs this year, with the resurrection of the popular "flag" jerseys of the 90's as an alternate. I'm working on digging up something to confirm this, and I'll make sure to pass it along when I do.
