Barons Sync Up With Oilers for New Uniform
The AHL's Oklahoma City Barons unveiled their new third jersey last week and it looks rather familiar. The Barons are syncing up with their NHL parent club, the Edmonton Oilers, with this new look. It's essentially the Oilers' home sweater with some logos moved around.
From the Barons' press release:
The Oklahoma City Barons unveiled a third jersey at their annual Open House at the Cox Convention Center late Tuesday [Oct. 9] evening.
The third jersey uses the same color combination worn by the Barons parent club, the Edmonton Oilers. The royal blue and orange combination features one of the Barons alternate logos on the crest, the letters “OKC” with an oil drop just above the middle of the logo.
It's a sharp look and I think we were all ecstatic when Edmonton brought it back. Great to see Oklahoma City carrying it on this season.

I think these look fantastic, and I love that wordmark.
I'd like to point out a sneaky feature of the design. Did you notice that the oil drop combined with the arced baseline of the "OKC" creates the top of the NHL Oilers classic logo? That is, imagine the oilers logo fitting right underneath the new OKC logo, and they dovetail together. What do you think? I like it. If you think of it that way, the logic of the concept can become the Barons being the feeder team to the Oilers. The drop (or symbolically the source of fuel or talent) comes from the OKC logo and drips down, and feeds the Oilers. It's a lucid idea.
I have to claim that I have never found the original combination of blue and orange to be very appealing.
I thought the Oilers' look pre-Reebok was great; navy blue and copper was very sharp.
I understand the desire to delve into the history closet and revisit a classic team attire. It's been a marketing boon for the Oilers! I'm just responding to Chris' words that 'we were all ecstatic when Edmonton brought it back.' I wasn't. :)
I don't necessarily want to see each AHL team wearing the same uniforms as their NHL parent clubs, but I get the desire to assimilate the colour scheme so they don't have to waste money on pant and helmet shells and new gloves, but I'd rather see AHL teams take the existing colour scheme and make new designs with them like the Crunch have done with their affiliates over the years.
