Old Uniforms

The Unveiling
The Rangers held no unveiling ceremony and images of their new jerseys were the last to be posted at online stores selling NHL gear.

Home vs. Road
Home: Blue. Road: White. The two sweaters are essentially mirror images of each other aside from the patterns on the shoulders.

The blue home jerseys feature white-red-white stripes around the elbows and waist. Red letters with white trim spelling out "RANGERS" are positioned diagonally across the front of the sweater and the laces at the collar are white.

The blue home jerseys feature slightly spaced blue-red-blue stripes around the elbows and waist. The shoulder yoke is blue with spaced red-blue stripes on the outside. Blue letters with red trim spelling out "RANGERS" are positioned diagonally across the front of the sweater. A blue stripe wraps around the wrist. The collar is red and the laces are white.

In The Details
The Rangers are the only team that does not use its primary logo on either jersey. The same numbering and lettering style has been retained.

New & Old
There are no major differences between the new and old jerseys. Slight modifications have been made though, including the league-wide changed collar. Also, the letters on the front of the sweater have been vertically spaced more and at times may seem a little off center.

Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? No.
Laces at the collar? Yes.

NHLToL Editorial by Chris
The Rangers' jerseys have always been fine. Nothing special to me. I understand tradition and this and that, but the Rangers were given a golden opportunity this season with the introduction of these new uniforms. If you ask me, they blew it big time. I've never been a fan of the text across the chest. I think hockey sweaters are meant to have logos. I also think the third jersey with the Lady Liberty logo is one of the best ever seen in the NHL. I would've quite possibly rated such a uniform 6/5 in this review. This may be a personal bias speaking, but I think the Rangers are one team in need of a sweeping makeover. But that will never happen. And that's really all I have to say on that. 2/5

Part 20 of 30. All 30 NHL clubs have unveiled new jerseys under the new Rbk EDGE Uniform System for the 2007-08 season. Here at the NHLToL, we're going to review every one of them. Read up and then rate the new sweaters. We'll do a full ranking after completing all of the reviews.

Calgary Flames

New Uniforms

Old Uniforms

The Unveiling
Tuesday, September 4. The Flames unveiled their jerseys to fans at Flames Central in Calgary.

Home vs. Road
Home: Red. Road: White. The two sweaters are essentially mirror images of each other and feature national and provincial flag patches on the shoulders.

The red home jerseys feature a unique striping pattern. Black piping circles from the sides to the sleeves but stops short before meeting on the outside of the arm. Black-white-yellow-black stripes are featured beneath the piping up the sides and extend down to the bottom of the jersey. White-yellow trim runs across the bottom of the sweater horizontally, stopping at the vertical black striping on the sides. The sleeves feature a black stripe above thinner white and yellow stripes. Beneath that, the cuff is black. The lacing and collar are black and the black version of the primary logo serves as the crest.

The white road jerseys feature a unique striping pattern. Red piping circles from the sides to the sleeves but stops short before meeting on the outside of the arm. Black-white-yellow-red stripes are featured beneath the piping up the sides and extend down to the bottom of the jersey. Red-yellow trim runs across the bottom of the sweater horizontally, stopping at the vertical black striping on the sides. The sleeves feature a black stripe above thinner white and yellow stripes. Beneath that, the cuff is red. The lacing is red, the collar is black and the red version of the primary logo serves as the crest.

In The Details
On both jerseys, the right shoulder features the Canadian flag and the left shoulder features the Albertan flag. The same numbering and lettering style has been retained.

New & Old
The differences between the old and new sweaters is primarily the striping as well as the secondary logo patches. The striping has completely changed and the secondary logo has been eliminated and replaced by national and provincial flags.

Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? No.
Laces at the collar? Yes.

NHLToL Editorial by Chris
I can't lie. Those stripes bother me on the Flames' sweaters. I think the striping on the sides is unique. But the piping is odd. Also, I feel like the horizontal stripes along the bottom clash with those vertical stripes. The jersey just feels poorly put together in that area. However, to balance that out, I do like the sleeve stripes, the collar style and the flag patches. So I can't reconcile calling it bad. It just averages out overall to me. 3/5

Rbk EDGE Review: Sabres

Part 19 of 30. All 30 NHL clubs have unveiled new jerseys under the new Rbk EDGE Uniform System for the 2007-08 season. Here at the NHLToL, we're going to review every one of them. Read up and then rate the new sweaters. We'll do a full ranking after completing all of the reviews.

Buffalo Sabres

New Uniforms

Old Uniforms

The Unveiling
Saturday, September 15. The Sabres didn't hold an unveiling event for their uniforms as the design wasn't changed from the previous version. But they went on sale to the public in the HSBC Arena in Buffalo on this date.

Home vs. Road
Home: Blue. Road: White. The two sweaters are essentially mirror images of each other aside from the sleeves and feature secondary logo patches on the shoulders.

The blue home jerseys feature a very unique striping pattern. A twisted silver stripe rides up the sides and around the shoulders beneath the logo patch. White, horn-shaped stripes wrap over the elbows and yellow paneling wraps under the arm down the cuff. The collar is silver with yellow trim and the primary logo serves as the crest.

The white road jerseys feature a very unique striping pattern. A twisted silver stripe rides up the sides and around the shoulders beneath the logo patch. Beneath the stripe on the arms, the sleeves are blue. White, horn-shaped stripes wrap over the elbows and yellow paneling wraps under the arm down the cuff. The collar is silver with yellow trim and the primary logo serves as the crest.

In The Details
The blue stroke around the logo on the white sweater is much thicker than on the blue one. Also the colors are swapped on the shoulder patches. The blue jersey features a yellow "B" while the white jersey features a blue one. The same numbering and lettering style has been retained.

New & Old
The new sweaters are primarily the same as the old as they were apparently designed last year with the new Rbk EDGE style in mind. The only difference would be the slight alteration to the stroke on the road jersey logo and the league-wide addition of the NHL shield to the collar.

Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? Yes.
Laces at the collar? No.

NHLToL Editorial by Chris
Since I'm neither a product of the 1970s nor a fan of the Sabres, I never really liked their original logo that much. However, while I respected their choice to honor tradition and return to those colors last year, I was disappointed. Being a huge proponent of the red and black years, I often hoped to see them one day go with the red third jersey full time as that one actually had — of all things — sabres on it. The team is from Buffalo, not called the buffaloes, so let that be indicated in a secondary manner. I liked everything about those red jerseys and while saying so might put me in the minority, that's how I feel. The "slug" was not the right move. And while they may not agree with my particular opinion, just ask any Buffalo fan and they'll tell you so. This is pretty bad. 2/5

Detroit Red Wings

New Uniforms

Old Uniforms

The Unveiling
Wednesday, August 8. The Red Wings unveiled their new jerseys to no fanfare via their official web site.

Home vs. Road
Home: Red. Road: White. The two sweaters are essentially mirror images of each other with slight differences on the sleeves.

The red home jerseys feature a thick white stripe around the elbows as well as at the bottom around the waist. The collar is red and the primary logo serves as the crest.

The white road jerseys feature red sleeves with an indentation at the shoulder where a white shoulder yoke would end. A thick white stripe wraps around the elbows and a thick red stripe wraps around the waist. The collar is red and the primary logo serves as the crest.

In The Details
The captains' letters on the front of the sweater have been moved from the left shoulder to the right since the tip of the wing rises so high on that side. The Red Wings are the only team to wear the letters on that side. The same numbering and lettering style has been retained.

New & Old
Aside from the league-wide collar change and the adaptation to the new Rbk EDGE cut, the Red Wings have made no major alterations to their jerseys.

Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? No.
Laces at the collar? No.

NHLToL Editorial by Chris
In my book, tradition and history don't win you anything by default. It still has to be earned. The Red Wings are the only team that can pull off the monochrome uniform and still look good. Despite my curiosity of what a new logo and uniform might look like, I wouldn't ever want to see it really changed. It's great the way it is. It's not perfect though. Because it hasn't really evolved over time, it's stale. The Bruins proved that minor yet marked alterations in striping style can result in turning a good jersey into a great one. Overall, I like it. 4/5

Los Angeles Kings

New Uniforms

Old Uniforms

The Unveiling
Friday, June 22. The Kings unveiled their new jerseys to fans at a draft day party in Los Angeles.

Home vs. Road
Home: Black. Road: White. The two sweaters are essentially mirror images of each other and feature secondary logo patches on the shoulders.

The black home jerseys feature purple shoulder yokes with silver trim. Spaced silver-purple-silver stripes wrap around the elbow with the purple stripe being the thickest. The text "LOS ANGELES" runs across the bottom of the front of the sweater in silver letters with a purple stroke. The collar is silver with purple trim on the inside and the primary logo serves as the crest.

The white road jerseys feature purple shoulder yokes with silver trim. Black-silver-purple-black-silver stripes wrap around the elbow with the purple stripe being the thickest. The text "LOS ANGELES" runs across the bottom of the front of the sweater in purple letters with a silver stroke. The collar is silver with black trim on the inside and the primary logo serves as the crest.

In The Details
A unique aspect of the Kings' uniforms is the city name across the bottom. The same numbering and lettering style has been retained.

New & Old
The new sweaters are primarily the same as the old with some slight modifications. The horizontal striping around the waist is gone and the shoulder yokes are rounded at the end instead of coming to a point as they did on the old jerseys. The elbow striping remains the same, however.

Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? No.
Laces at the collar? No.

NHLToL Editorial by Chris
The Kings are one of the most interesting-looking teams if for no other reason than their use of the color purple — an element unique to them. Their color scheme is one of my favorites, league-wide. It doesn't adhere to the red/blue standard. In fact, it sort of mixes them. Even the name across the bottom is cool — so long as it doesn't get stolen by other teams. My one quibble would be with the color of the home sweater. I'd love to see them go with the purple jersey they wore as an alternate last year on a permanent basis. But we can't have everything, can we? 4/5

Chicago Blackhawks

New Uniforms

Old Uniforms

The Unveiling
Friday, September 14. The Blackhawks unveiled their new jerseys at a press conference in Chicago. Martin Havlat, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Brent Seabrook were on hand to model the uniforms.

Home vs. Road
Home: Red. Road: White. The two sweaters are essentially mirror images of each other with slight differences in striping patterns and feature secondary logo patches on the shoulders.

The red home jerseys feature white-black-white stripes around the elbows and white-black-white-black stripes around the waist with white extending down to the bottom. The collar is white with black trim on the inside and the primary logo serves as the crest.

The white road jerseys feature spaced black-red-black stripes around the elbows and the waist with black cuffs extending to the the wrist around the sleeves. The collar is red with black trim on the inside and the primary logo serves as the crest.

In The Details
The colors are different on the shoulder patch between the home and road sweaters. The same numbering and lettering style has been retained.

New & Old
There is hardly a difference at all between the two uniforms. The old design was simply adapted to the new EDGE cut. The one noticeable difference is in the collar, which now, like all new jerseys, features the NHL shield.

Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? No.
Laces at the collar? No.

NHLToL Editorial by Chris
By now all of you must be aware of my aversion to the Blackhawks' logo and uniforms. It's just a personal preference thing. I don't see what's so special about it and why it's often been called the best uniform in all of sports. I don't think it's ugly by any means, but I don't understand it's allure. One thing is for sure, though. You always know when you're watching a Blackhawks game. But personally, I think you could do just as much better as worse with this one. It's not bad but it's not great either. Now go on, tell me how ridiculous I am for holding such an opinion. 3/5

Washington Capitals

New Uniforms

Old Uniforms

The Unveiling
Friday, June 22. The Capitals unveiled their new jerseys to fans at a draft day party in Washington.

Home vs. Road
Home: Red. Road: White. The two sweaters are essentially mirror images of each other and both feature secondary logo patches on the shoulders.

The red home jerseys feature blue piping that extends down the sleeves to the cuff where blue piping also goes around the wrist. A unique-shaped white stripe under the inside of the arm runs the length of the sleeve. A thin blue stripe goes around the waist a few inches above the bottom of the sweater. The collar is blue and the new primary logo serves as the crest.

The white road jerseys feature blue piping that extends down the sleeves to the cuff where blue piping also goes around the wrist. A unique-shaped red stripe under the inside of the arm runs the length of the sleeve. A thin blue stripe goes around the waist over red. The side panels are blue and the collar is blue. The new primary logo serves as the crest.

In The Details
The Capitals introduced new colors and a newly designed logo with these uniforms so the numbering and lettering style has also changed.

New & Old
Because the Capitals revamped their look entirely, the new uniforms bare no resemblance to the old ones in any way. It was a complete makeover.

Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? No.
Laces at the collar? No.

NHLToL Editorial by Chris
I was disappointed by the Capitals' choice to return to colors that have been overused in the NHL and to a logo that is no more than a wordmark and symbolic of really nothing except the past. But even having said that, both have grown on me. That's why I think it's important I'm doing this reviews after all the new jerseys have had time to sink in a little. While I was a huge proponent of the bronze and blue era of this club, red, white and blue honestly seem to suit them best. And I love the new logo on the shoulder. Overall, while these uniforms have their quirks, they're certainly better than average. 4/5

Edmonton Oilers

New Uniforms

Old Uniforms

The Unveiling
Sunday, September 16. The Oilers unveiled their new jerseys to fans at the Joey Moss Cup event in Edmonton.

Home vs. Road
Home: Blue. Road: White. The two sweaters are essentially mirror images of each other.

The blue home jerseys feature copper piping on the front that extends from the collar to the bottom of the jersey. Spaced white-copper-white stripes wrap under the elbow but not completely around the sleeve. The copper stripe has red trim. The collar is copper and the primary logo serves as the crest.

The white road jerseys feature blue piping on the front that extends from the collar to the bottom of the jersey. Spaced blue-copper-blue stripes wrap under the elbow but not completely around the sleeve. The copper stripe has red trim. The collar is blue and the primary logo serves as the crest.

In The Details
This uniform is the only one with the unique striping pattern at the elbows. The stripes to do not wrap completely around the arm, rather leaving a large gap on the outside of the elbow. The same numbering and lettering style has been retained.

New & Old
The striping pattern remains primarly the same around the sleeves with the exception being the gap at the elbow. The horizontal striping on the bottom of the sweater is gone as are the shoulder patches. The addition of the piping on the front and the altered collar are the only other differences.

Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? No.
Laces at the collar? No.

NHLToL Editorial by Chris
Upon first seeing the Oilers' new jerseys, I was stunned. Not in the good way. I've always liked this team's sweaters — the caveat being the WHA years. Even when orange was replaced by copper and red, I still thought the Oil had one of the best jerseys in the NHL. That is so far from the truth now. The biggest problem is obviously the elbow stripes, but the list goes on. Adding to the banality of these sweaters is the the lack of a shoulder patch. Edmonton had one of the best up until last season. These monstrosities, and I do not use the word lightly, do honestly look so plain and unimaginative as to almost warrant being called practice jerseys. They are my least favorite of all. 1/5

Carolina Hurricanes

New Uniforms

Old Uniforms

The Unveiling
Thursday, September 6. The Hurricanes unveiled their new jerseys at a press conference where they also discussed plans for the 10th anniversary season.

Home vs. Road
Home: Red. Road: White. The two sweaters are essentially mirror images of each other and feature secondary logo patches on both shoulders.

The red home jerseys feature the signature hurricane flags wrapped horizontally around the waist with a silver-white stripe above it and a white-black stripe below it. A silver stripe wraps around the elbow above a larger white stripe. The cuff is black. White piping extends around the sholders from the collar which is white with a thin black stripe on the inside. The primary logo serves as the crest.

The white road jerseys feature the signature hurricane flags wrapped horizontally around the waist with a red-white stripe above it and a white-black stripe below it. A silver stripe wraps around the elbow above a larger red stripe. The cuff is black. Red piping extends around the sholders from the collar which is black with a thin red stripe on the inside. The primary logo serves as the crest.

In The Details
The Hurricanes jersey, when compared to the rest of the league, has the most going on in terms of horizontal striping around the waist.

New & Old
The striping remains primarly the same between the old and new uniforms. The only differences are the piping around the shoulders and addition of the NHL shield at the collar which is a league-wide change.

Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? No.
Laces at the collar? No.

NHLToL Editorial by Chris
When we talk about "busy" jerseys, these are the first ones that come to my mind. I do like the originality, however. The hurricane flags (technically tropical storm flags) are are a nice touch. And I think both the primary and secondary logos are top-notch. But those stripes! Not to mention, I for one, could live without the piping around the shoulders. I think it only detracts from the jersey. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. 3/5

Anaheim Ducks

New Uniforms

Old Uniforms

The Unveiling
Friday, September 14. The Ducks unveiled their new jerseys to fans during their first preseason game.

Home vs. Road
Home: Black. Road: White. The two sweaters are essentially mirror images of each other.

The black home jerseys feature swooshing gold-white-black-orange stripes around the bottom. These stripes are broken up by solid side paneling. Similar stripes are found around the sleeves. The collar is orange with gold trim and the primary logo serves as the crest.

The white road jerseys feature swooshing gold-white-black-orange stripes around the bottom. Black extends down to the bottom of the jersey from the orange stripe. These stripes are broken up by solid side paneling. Similar stripes are found around the sleeves. The collar is orange with gold trim and the primary logo serves as the crest.

In The Details
Because of its proportions, the crest is the smallest on any of the new Rbk EDGE sweaters. The same numbering and lettering style has been retained.

New & Old
Little has been changed on the new sweaters as the Ducks just introduced new ones last summer. Some slight differences include the collar (as with all of the jerseys) along with the way the side paneling breaks up the striping of the jersey.

Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? No.
Laces at the collar? No.

NHLToL Editorial by Chris
I know these jerseys now have a Stanley Cup behind them, but I cannot get over how poor the logo is. I understand the marketing team wanting to disassociate themselves with the "Mighty" name, but surely there are better ways of doing that. I should say that without the logo, I really do like these jerseys. But a uniform is more than just colors and stripes. The logo is the biggest part and I have never been a big fan of it. That and the numbers and captains' letters are oversized when compared with the crest. The lack of imagination has spurred me to award my lowest rating yet. 2/5
