Week 5: Final Name Voting
We're getting closer to having new names for a handful of IceHL teams. As 13 Weeks of R&R enters its fifth week, it's time to make final decisions on what those names will be.
In this week's polls you'll be able to vote for one name per team. So make your ballot count. And remember, you only have four days to vote. Polls close at midnight on Tuesday! Some similar names will be voted on together in these polls. Should they win, short run-off polls will be held to determine a final winner.
Happy voting!
Choose ONE name per team.
Original team name in ALL CAPS where available.
As you probably noticed, for the first time since 13 Weeks of R&R began, the poll results are not visible after you vote. This is because I'd like to do a big reveal on Wednesday.
NOTES: If you take a look at the results from the previous round of voting, you'll notice they don't quite sync up with this week's options the way they should. Certain names have been disqualified and I'll explain why below. But first let me apologize for not catching the issues prior to posting the polls.
Calgary: Mounties (rights owned by RCMP). Montreal: Royale (too similar to ECHL's Reading Royals). Philadelphia: Freedom (too similar to Philadelphia Freedoms World TeamTennis organization). Saskatchewan: Thunder (name in use by ECHL's Stockton Thunder). Washington: Federals (name used by USFL team 1983–84); Eagles (name in use by ECHL's Colorado Eagles).

So Atlanta's old team could become the Atlantics? I hope so. Halifax Atlantics has a nice vintage feel to it. As far as I can tell the name has only ever been used by a baseball team from the 1800s.
If the Royale and Eagles are disqualified, why are the Hartford Mariners allowed? Name in Use: Seattle MLB
The Washington Revolution name makes no sense. DC isn't Philly or Boston (which have alot of history connected with the Revolution), the Revolutionary war was finished more than a decade before Washington was even built.
I don't think Montreal Royale was too similar to Reading Royal because I never heard of this team.
So Patriots and Chargers are still in despite the New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers of the NFL, but Freedom is out because of a tennis team? And Federals is out because a long-time defunct football team?
I know I've already complained about Halifax, but Acadians and Atlantics are not remotely similar...
Some of you guys aren't paying attention, so I'll say it one more time. Only pro hockey team names are disqualified regardless of the city. However, for other sports, the city and name have to go together. Therefore, Eagles and Thunder are not allowed (ECHL teams) but Chargers and Patriots are permitted (the IceHL teams are not in San Diego or New England). By the same token, Philadelphia Freedom would basically match the full team name just like Washington Federals and therefore both are disqualified.
Vote Athletique! Also, I think there should be a runoff poll between Lumberjacks and Jacks if it wins. Lumberjacks is too long and doesn't sound great IMO.
I'm sorry...I don't understand why MotorHeads had to be taken off the table for Detroit. None of these three names are even close to that good, and this is coming from a Detroit native. They just don't roll of the tongue - remember, its "de-TROIT," not "DEE-troit." MotorHeads was the perfect name. This really upsets me.
Here's a few name suggestions that are more "Detroit Historic"...
Detroit Ambassadors (Ambassador Bridge that goes to Windsor)
Detroit Renaissance (for the iconic RenCen on the Detroit Skyline)
if the team was based in Belle Isle, on the Detroit River, the Detroit Islanders
And if you want to go with Chargers, which is the best of the three suggestions, I would say go one step further into the auto industry direction and be the Detroit TurboChargers.
But that's just one faithful Icethetics reader and native Detroiter's opinion.
Seattle Totems is a junior hockey team. Las Vegas Wranglers is a junior hockey team. Why is one allowed but not the other?
I STILL think the Philadelphia INDEPENDENCE should get a shot... But at least the Keystones made it into the finals as the most crest-and-logo-friendly name in the bunch. Cornflower blue and Maize should be the colors to match the old Pennsylvania License plates (with the Keystone in the middle and "the Keystone State" on them.... And HOW COOL WOULD IT BE if they only had two colors, and used the Maize as their light roads? Kinda like the LA Lakers of old, before they had that white alternate jersey. If anyone doesn't know, blue and yellow are the traditional colors of PA, as it originally had a huge Swedish population. The Eagles started with those colors, and the Philly Union have adopted shades of it as well.
I don't remember seeing the Boston Harbormen on the original voting list... Not a bad name! But if the Colonials win, and a logo rebranding is in order, how about a big Tri-Cornered Hat as the primary crest/logo? They could go navy, aged white, and crimson as the colors...
I'm glad Atlantics is an option for Halifax. One of the major issues with the name Acadians is that Halifax was actually founded by the British as a base in a war against the Acadians, as well as to disrupt supply lines between Annapolis Royal (the Acadian capital) and the fortress of Louisburg, making Halifax an enemy city to the Acadians.
From a logo design perspective, Atlantics will allow designers to pretty much create whatever they want for a logo. I'm still pulling for Arsenal though, I'd love to do something Navy-themed.
@FEENIXX Ambassadors and Renaissance roll right off the tongue? Those names are terrible. Not everything has to be specific to team history. What do Lions and Tigers have to do with Detroit history, anyway? I agree with you though that Motorheads was a fine name. Unfortunately everyone else disagreed, or didn't understand how major the major changes are.
Hey wait a second. Doesn't the Steelcats name be included with the steel/steelmen name?
Chris: I get that reasoning, but the Federals haven't existed for nearly three decades (they moved to Orlando and became the Renegades for the USFL's final season in 1985) and played in a league that only played for three seasons in the mid-80's so that's what doesn't make sense to me about that name being DQ'd despite being an early favorite.
How about the Washington Gridlock!
so im confused is this league already full with gm's or are we having new ones for a some of the teams because if so i would like my name in running
@Feenixx
MotorHeads probably can't be used because of the band. Seems pretty logical to me.
I'm so glad that Freedom was disqualified as a name for the Philadelphia team. I hated that.
@Joe Langdon
Not to mention the Hartford Mariners logo is quite similar to a Seattle Mariners logo from the 70s and 80's. Then again the Lumberjacks logo was very similar to the Vancouver Giants logo as well.
In response to Feenixx.
The problem with Ambassadors (which is one I really liked) is that it was used by the OHL team. So it gets disqualified.
I had really liked the idea of Detroit or Michigan Lakers, personally, it's a shame it didn't make it through.
@Derrick:
The leagues with which team names cannot match are the NHL, AHL, and ECHL. You can have names from the WSHL.
So PRO names are disqualified, but amateur/junior names are allowed? Gatineau/Montreal Olympiques, London/Hamilton Knights?
I'm pretty sure this has been brought up before, but I don't understand why Montreal Olympiques are allowed when the real-life Gatineau Olympiques (QMJHL) are only 125 miles away.
I like this project as much as anybody, but you guys need to chill out about the name criteria and what-not. If Chris eliminates a name, or allows a name, for whatever reason, just go with it. At the end of the day it is still just a list of names for a fake hockey team.
Motorheads was canned because, and I'll quote "the most disliked team in the IceHL". Nearly 80% of the voters said to do a major overhaul. Anything over 75% and the whole works gets wiped off, and you start with a clean slate.
Lakers was my personal fave, just because it has meaning to Detroit, but isn't the same old tired stereotype. Heck, given the news of this week, maybe they should be the Detroit Chapter 9's.
Out of everything still in the running, I'll have to go with chargers.
@KB I didn't realize the ECHL was considered a professional league until now. My bad, thanks for clarification
Isn't there a team in the QMJHL called the Armada though? I know that they are relatively new, but are we going to put the IceHL Quebec Armada through a rebranding?
@ Alex
The Quebec Armada were one of our original teams in 2008, the Blainville-Broisbriand Armada were still known as the Montreal Juniors at that time, they did not begin using the name Armada until 2011 I believe.
Too bad all the rules are in place about Detroit. I could've seen keeping the logo but changing the name to the Motor City Mayhem.
@Donnie/Alex
If I'm paraphrasing Chris correctly only the top three pros--NHL, AHL and ECHL--names are off limits. Junior teams are not (unless its an exact city AND team name match which goes for all sports even paintball).
@Ben M
Good call on the dates. IceHL teams that existed first gotta take precedence so if Blainville-Broisbriand doesn't like the overlap they can re-rename themselves.
