Prepare the Cannon!
BlueJacketsXtra, the Columbus Dispatch's NHL hockey blog, broke more third jersey news over the weekend.
Turns out the Columbus Blue Jackets' 2010-11 alternate sweater will have yet another new crest, with the primary element being a cannon — a mainstay of Blue Jackets concept art here on Icethetics for a while.
Typical of Civil War imagery, it's not surprising to see Columbus work a cannon into their identity as they celebrate a decade of mediocrity with the sixth sweater in franchise history.
Here's what beat writer Aaron Portzline had to say on the matter:
NHL sources tell The Dispatch the Blue Jackets' new third sweater, to debut next season, will feature a cannon as the central part of the main logo.
It's unknown what the base color of the sweater will be, but it's unlikely to be red or silver for fear of looking too much like Ohio State.
Whenever the Blue Jackets tinker with their sweaters, fans should be compelled to raise a toast to former team president and general manager Doug MacLean. If not for MacLean, the main logo when the Blue Jackets took the ice in 2000 would have been Stinger.
First, I think it's unlikely the jersey will be red or silver simply because the team is called the Blue Jackets. It would be like the Red Wings wearing green jerseys. It would hurt my brain. Personally, I always liked the blue-black-red combo on the old third jersey from 2003. Maybe they go back to something like that?
Second, that's cool about Doug MacLean keeping the bug off the front of the jerseys. Somehow that little tidbit escaped my radar all these years. It's like how Mike Keenan kept that awful Blues jersey from ever seeing the light of day.
Who's on board with forming the Icethetics Hall of Fame? We honor those who have made hockey look better. Keenan and MacLean should be the first inductees for taking preventive measures to protect us against ugly jerseys.
Anyway, here's a cannon logo for you. Think Keenan or MacLean would let that fly? (Out the window, maybe. Zing!)
A Whopper of a Jersey
Speaking of bad hockey uniforms...
One guy who will never get into the Icethetics Hall of Fame is Sam McMaster — the GM of the Kings in 1995 who approved this atrocity, then proceeded to let Wayne Gretzky actually wear it in NHL games.
Over the weekend, it seems a group of dedicated Los Angeles Kings fans held Burger King Appreciation Day — a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the 15-year-old third jerseys.
And if you don't believe me, The Royal Half and Life in Hockeywood have incredible write-ups on it as well as incredible photos of fans swarming in these sweaters.
Such brave souls.
A Hell of a Jersey
Don't forget, the New Jersey Devils will finally break out their red and green throwback jerseys on Wednesday night.
The one-time-only vintage sweaters, designed in the Reebok Edge style unlike the Flames' throwbacks from this season, will hit the ice on St. Patrick's Day when the Devils take on the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins — and then probably go back into hiding for another 20 years.
The Devils have a few photo galleries on their website showcasing the green-infused jerseys, including one just posted today. It shows jerseys belonging to Martin Brodeur and Zach Parise. Notice there's no black to be found — just like in the old days.
I think the coolest thing is Marty Brodeur's throwback helmet — painted to match the original mask he wore as a rookie in the early 1990s before the black and red one that would later become an NHL icon.
And there's also this small gallery in which you can see Parise's helmet and some more angles of the jersey.
I'll try to have this Devils jersey gallery up right away this week. I know I've been slacking off in that area, but I really wanted to spend the time getting the new NHLToL going. And yes, I will be finishing up the Olympic jersey galleries in the near future.

anyone notice that it looks like reebok edge is in full effect of the devils.
Thats not even a true throwback! Thats a mix of the old and the new. Black yokes and striping with green trim on the numbers and in the crest? It's a mish-mash, and it is ugly. Either do it all the way or dont do it at all. They changed the arm striping but not the waist. Strange...
Wow, nice white diaper at the bottom. I thought they were going with the CCM cut for this jersey.
I can't believe I'm gonna say this ... I like the Devils throwback jersey!
It's not black, sir! It's the lighting. Very dark, dark green. I always wish it was lighter!
Gloves, there is no black on that jersey. Its green. Check your monitor.
kudos for the calgary cannons reference, brings back a ton of memories when calgary had a baseball team that no one cared about, save for a select few (me included)
Dont think my monitor is off...look at the green RBK logo on the back of the neck...looks like green on black to me. The old logo was a kelly green, which also shows up on the logo and number trim. I hope I am wrong, because whit it looks like to me is pretty awful.
Just to clear up the confusion, the shoulders are not black. They are green, in fact. I know it looks like you're seeing two different shades of green, but really it's just the way the light is reflecting. Obviously the material of the jersey is different from the patch embroidery. It also looks like whoever shot these pictures may have used a consumer digital camera with the flash on. Very bad idea. But rest easy, there's no black on these throwbacks.
I'm a Kings fan and while watching the game, I saw this group of crazy people in the background wearing that horrible jersey and wondered what the heck it was all about! Thanks for explanation.
I saw this design on a CBJ fan blog, and I really liked the blue and muted gold
Gotta Love the diaper look. God I hate the RBK EDGE crap!!
I saw those Kings fans at the game.... it was pretty awesome! It's very rare to actually get these jerseys anywhere (in all my seasons of going to Kings games, I've only seen a couple). I like it because of the purple and gold.... something we really need.
I've got a Ray Ferraro Kings "BK" jersey, and I LOVE it! Especially the font/cresting colours. That gold is quite rare, and frankly, I'd love to see the Kings ditch the silver for a gold trim. Purple and gold for royalty, after all. Great font, too. I agree that having the logo off-center is a little odd in this case, though. Okay, love the back, could live without the front.
As for the Devils bringing back the green, it's about bloody time. Good for them! Can't wait to see it tomorrow!
The Devils jersey would be better if they used the actual number design from the X-mas jerseys instead of using the current numbers.
here's a small preview (you can see pant shells and helmets in action)
also here, too
CHRISTMAS!
Im going to the Devils game tomorrow night where they're gonna wear the retro green jerseys. I cant wait!!!!
So its pretty safe to asume Broudur is starting. That is a beautiful mask, love the retro uni's for the Devils. They should make it their alternate next year.
Just for the record, the classic Red Wings' uniforms have a Christmas look as well, lol. Very happy to see that the Devils will be wearing the red and dark green retros. Red and black have become so dog-gone generic. Teams with red uniforms can still have their OWN look.
Detroit: Red and white.
Montreal: Red, white, and royal blue.
Washington: Red, white, and navy blue.
Chicago: Red, white, and black(and ONLY the 'Hawks)
Carolina: Red, white, silver, and black.
Calgary(future??): Red, white, and gold.
New Jersey(future??): Red, white, and dark green.
Variety is the way to go.
I've got one of those Kings jerseys. It's delightfully ugly. I love it!
Those Devils jerseys are awesome! Much better than the overused red & black.
Glad to see Columbus is using a design other than their side patch (still a very good logo). Hopefully it will be done well.
Also, how did those 4 LA fans get their hands on game worn "Burger King" thirds? Auction I assume? Those things are pretty rare since no players wanted to be seen in them.
It was an honor to participate (1st guy on left side of photo) in the BK appreciation event. This should be an annual event.
Seriously? Okay, I know these are a fun throwback, but honestly, red and green is a terrible idea for the Devils full time. I literally laughed the first time I found out they wore red and green. They're the freaking Devils! Why would they have green as a color!? I am so thankful their normal jerseys are red and black.
Loving that throwback New Jersey Jersey...I hate their current look, and I hate the team, but you throw a little green in there and suddenly it looks good.
Johnny,
They had the green to represent New Jersey, because it is known as the Garden State. Also the Devils have nothing to do with the Satan type devil. New Jersey folk lore has a story about the New Jersey Devil, who was born in the Pine Barons of NJ. He was the last born child of the Leeds family and supposedly came out with bat wings and few off and is seen by crazy people from time to time.
The black actually has nothing to do with the team other than giving a better looking uniform.
I wouldn't mind if the Devils just wore these uniforms with the green replaced with black. I like the striping and red helmets better.
Me, I always liked the original red-green-white Devils motif - especially the shoulder striping design - somewhat and was nonplussed when green was replaced by black & the present design.....I would also theorize that the original pine-green tone was a nod to the Pine Barrens themselves (a stretch of desolate barren plains lightly dotted with pine trees, hence the name) that more or less span from the Delaware Memorial Bridge in the West to Atlantic City in the East.....
A Noteto pickup hockey players in New jersey
always take the guy in old school green devil pants.
I have never a bad player wear them
