Polls: NHLToSL Week 5
Monday · Jul 12 · 2010 | 11:00 AM PDT Comments Off
Polls close Sunday, July 18 at 11:59 PM
Group A
Group B
Tournament Notes Another week of close results is keeping the standings rather tight. A mere 66 points separate first place from last place in Group A while 80 points separate them in Group B. ... In the biggest jump in any Icethetics logo tournament yet, the Senators logo leapt from 10th to 5th place in just one week.

Sweet! I was literally the first voter!
Yay easy week for the Pred logo!
Should be a ridiculously easy week for the Weagle, I think.
Man I love the preds logo...that is so sweet.
I've said it before and I'll say it again...I just dont like the Canucks logo here. Never has done anything for me. I like the johnny canuck head, but the V just looks to bland and boring. it makes the logo feel childish and flat.
people need to vote for the logo that looks best ON A SHOULDER instead of the best logo in general. then this tourney will be so much less biased
Pretty easy choices this time. That Ottawa =O= deserves to be on the front of the jersey.
As a Sens fan, I long to see the =O= logo on the front of a jersey too. I seem to recall at one point, that the team did not have the rights to that vintage logo so they slightly altered it and put it on the shoulders. Needless to say, seeing as it's a should patch logo now, I would imagine the team has the rights to put it front and center as the main crest of a jersey. I'm not liking its chances of beating the Hawks here, purely because of the popularity of their Cup win. I remember their old shoulder patch was the "S" logo with the established year in Roman numerals which was pretty sweet and would probably have a better chance at competing with the tomahawk logo.
Perhaps this has already been covered, but why are some logos the alternate logos (Blackhawks, Canucks) while others are primary (Blues, Bruins). I happen to like the Bruins secondary logo a lot more than many of these other alternates, but I like many of these alternates much more than the Bruins primary logo.
Matt, just take a quick look at the format page where it's all spelled out. As previously said, "secondary" isn't an entirely accurate term to describe this tournament — though I sometimes use it anyway. The key is that they're logos used as shoulder patches on the uniforms. The Blues logo is used on the shoulder of their third jersey, as is the case with the Bruins.
I'm amazed at how little I have been following this. It's nothing against Chris or the site or the idea. It's just that the Flyers aren't in this tournament. I really like the Blue Jackets logo and hope that it wins but I don't check this as much as I did when the Flyers were in a tournament.
BOB, the flyers don't have a secondary logo
Ok seriously people.
The St Louis Logo is the exact same as their primary. Why is it getting a lot of votes and doing well in the standings?
@Riggs
Because it's sexalicious?
How is the Blue Jackets logo competing with the Blues logo? The requirement for the tournament is that the logo must be featured on the shoulder of a uniform. The Blues logo is just as deserving as any other logo, to vote it down out of spite is foolish and pathetic.
MOOSEY people are voting it down because it looks bad as a shoulder logo.
I wanted to vote for the Preds logo here, but that checkerboard background is unforgivable.
The Bluenote is getting votes because, well, it's the best-looking logo in the league. Seems like reason enough to me. And it looks just dandy on a shoulder.
What I want to know is what everyone likes about the weagle. Never really liked it myself. Sure, it features the capitol building in its negative space and is shaped like a W, but I just don't like the look of it.
I realize the Flyers don't have a secondary logo. I'm just saying that since they don't have one and can't be in the tournament I'm not incredibly interested.
@MOOSEY
The Blue Jackets logo is actually a good logo and the Blues logo isn't that great.
Also... In my opinion the Blues logo isn't as amazing as everybody thinks.
This is just complete B.S. Do you have a hate against the Senators or something? Because it sure seems like it. You put their logo in the same group as the Bruins, Capitals, Blackhawks, and Canucks, making it literally impossible for them to advance to the next round because of the fanbase behind the top 4 teams in the group. I mean, I'm sorry, but it just seems like you want them to do poorly, as they have played the Caps and Hawks to this point and have gotten demolished in both weeks. You're essentially putting the Sens great logo into the non advancing pile along with the Canes, Wild and Preds, who have pretty bad logos. I mean just look how much the Sens beat the Wild last week. If you had put them in the other group, then I could see this logo going very far in the tournament, as it should. No doubt it could overtake the Thrashers logo and most of the others in that group. But, no, instead you had to put this logo in the same group as the 'Big 4' and then proceed to have them face 2 of those logos in the first 3 weeks of voting. I don't know how else to put it, but this just isn't fair. How could the Thrashers logo be in line to advance, but the Sens logo not be? I think you need to start rethinking how these tournaments are made up, as the way these groups are split up are in no way fair, and is evidenced by the Sens logo being put in a corner, unable to advance without a miracle in the group that it is currently in.
the groupings are made at random. IMO that is fair. If it is being beaten now by the washington logo and the blackhawks logo then what would be better about it advancing over other logos just to be beaten later on. it really makes no difference in the end. This is done at complete randomization, the only fair way to make these groupings. real mature name btw.
@Mike Hawk QQ more, man. It's a freaking secondary logo contest on a fan website. Spare your whiny conspiracy theories for things that actually matter. This is just supposed to be fun.
Well if it is random, then it is definitely not the best way to determine a champion. What if the logo were to be in the other group and play all the weak logos? Then no doubt the overall competition would be affected by this and the results would be different. I am just using this as an example to show how the current format is flawed, and chicagolander, I can see why you're telling me to shut up since you just won the Cup and have a huge lead on our logo this week. Real easy to say things like that when you get a whole bunch of publicity from the finals to help out with your voting, no?
Jason Spezza, is that you?!?
seriously tho mike settle down its not a big deal, if you lose a matchup that badly, then you aren't gonna win the tournament are you?; who cares where you get 'eliminated'...and if the groups aren't chosen at random, how exactly do you propose we do it?
and for the record, since you single out the thrashers logo, i would much prefer atlanta's secondary to ottawa's. Just because you like or prefer a logo doesn't mean everyone else does
Seriously, man....quit your whining. You're just coming off like a two-year old now. I'm glad to see that my team's logo has been doing well so well, but really.... who cares? It's a freaking blog contest that means absolutely nothing. If the Hawks logo lost, I'd be perplexed as I honestly like that secondary logo, but I definitely wouldn't go off on a tangent on a blog comment section complaining about the format.
That being said, I'm really doubting that the Hawks' Stanley Cup win is really helping out here that much. I'm somehow doubting that there's a big enough surge from that win to explain a freaking 70-30 split in the votes in this contest. The Hawks logo is beating the Sens logo for no other reason than the fact that more people seem to like it more than the Sens logo, end of story. Regardless of who I like, that's how I vote for all of these.
If the Senators logo was good or popular or whatever you want to claim this contest is determining, then where it is in the pool shouldn't really matter. If it's good/popular, it'll move on regardless of the competition. If it's bad/unpopular, it'll die off. Whether it's killed early on or after a while, what does it matter? The end result would be the same.
First I saw, "This is complete B.S, do you hate the Senators"
Then I saw a wall of text.
So I stopped reading.
as a caps fan, im gonna vote for the weagle. but i like it for the basics. the fact that its simple and uses the whole logo like the negative space and the wings and the color, every thing works. its the best in the league imo.
An interesting idea for the next voting blog could be team jerseys! I don't think we've ever done that here. I've been a regular follower since summer 2007 and aside from logos, the only other things I've seen different was the center ice logo competition. The poll would operate much of the same way here, where we choose which jersey (including pre-Edge) of the teams will move on to represent that team, ie, Bruins 2007-08 (Edge black home) vs Caps (2006 black home). This would be a MASSIVE undertaking (digging into the past designs) but would be really cool. After spending time looking over nhluniforms.com , I think this would be real interesting to see what the consensus would be regarding league-wide jersey designs!
Sure we know that the Hawks logo is demolishing the Sens logo, but what I'm saying is we'll never know what people think of a Thrashers/Sens matchup or even a Hawks/Thrashers matchup, so how is that fair if one logo can only face a limited amount of other logos in the preliminary rounds, then extending to the rounds afterwards? There must be a better way to do it. What we've learned so far is that the Sens logo is not as popular as the weagle or the Hawks logo, but what about comparing it to the Avalanche logo or the Florida logo? Results are going to be skewed unless we can get a better tournament formatting.
okay i think i gotcha, so you propose we do a 19 week tournament so every logo faces every other logo, which, plus the two preliminary weeks and playoff would take us somewhere into January 2011, so that your precious sens logo can MAYBE lose in the 1st round of the playoffs instead of not making the playoffs in an INTERNET BLOG'S SECONDARY LOGO POLL COMPETITION!!!!.....take a minute and realize how ridiculous that sounds
Wow. I haven't read these comments for a couple of days. Haha! This is pretty good.
Ok, so Mike, like others have pointed out, the groups are determined at random so as to avoid any conscious or subconscious effort on my part to hurt a specific logo. Here's the thing, though. Your argument falls a little flat when you say the randomization is unfair to the competition. Is it unfair that the Blue Jackets are in the same division as the Red Wings? How can they be expected to get a playoff spot when the Wings have such talent every year?
Granted the NHL's divisions are decided by geography, but that might as well be random too. It's not as though a city's location is going to make a team better or worse. The league just needs to save on travel costs. Icethetics needs to save time and keep things moving along.
Yes, the Blue Jackets get to play every other team in the league, but it's still skewed, right, because they will face the Wings five more times than, say, the Lightning. Thing is, they have seven months to spend trying to make the playoffs. No offense, but no one here has that kind of attention span, least of all myself. So we have to make it more manageable in terms of tournament length. Eight weeks is tolerable.
I say all this just to explain my thinking. And if you still aren't satisfied, I refer you to those pointing out that this whole thing doesn't matter anyway. It's a way to pass the time and I know I enjoy watching the polls. Just have fun, vote, and realize that ultimately no one is benefiting nor suffering from the results.
Well the fact that each poll takes a whole week is kind of absurd in itself. The voting percentages aren't going to change much after the first day, so each poll doesn't have to take a full week to complete. Take the Sens/Hawks matchup for an example, it's been hovering around 70/30 for the whole week, and there isn't going to be any major shift in voting as the week progresses, so maybe something like a 2 day period to vote for each poll would be better, especially since you're intent on saving time on these polls. A 2 day period to vote would in addition possibly allow for more matchups in the tournament, and would, in my mind, help decide a winner more effectively than now.
@Mike Hawk (I can only assume this is the host of the new Discovery Channel show) Regardless of how any logo would do against any other, it will all come down to one logo. It doesn't matter if one team makes the elimination round or not. If it loses to a team now, it would have lost later.
Fair enough, Mike, I guess I did leave one thing out: I have a job. To you I'm not a real person and this site just happens by magic, but in fact I am human and work eight hours a day. There's a reason new polls change over on the weekends. I don't have time to create an entire set of new polls every two days — very tedious work.
Not to mention most people don't visit the site on a daily basis and I'd like as many people to vote as possible. Two days is too short, two weeks too long. A week is nice and simple.
By the way, you are wrong about all polls being decided on the first day. Using a landslide as your only example is what's absurd, actually. We've seen our fair share of polls go back and forth throughout the week. And yes, I'm interested in moving things along, but I have to balance that with my ability to update the website.
And to be perfectly honest, no one else has complained about this format. So unless there exists a better solution that's really necessary, I'm just going to leave it at that. Enjoy!
OHHHHHHHHHHH! You got freaking burned Mike!
Hey Mike,
You have a right to complain, but come on you sound like you are whining. I agree a week feels like a long time for the polls but this is Chris's site and really good one at that. If you want the polls to be shorter then you can start your own site and put Ottawa up against the "bad logos". Until then enjoy this site or dont come to vote at all.
ouch sharkfan, ouch. but thank you for making me laugh this morning.
Hey Mike
just think of the primary logo tourney, had ottawa made the playoffs they would have lost in the first round. Or even if they make a miracle run in any tourney, they will not win the final if they are up against a better logo. The only way they can win is if you get 1000 people to vote for them.
Consider for a moment Colorado's Yeti, Sasquatch, Big Foot, Abominable Snowman logo. What a clever idea to use this for a shoulder patch in relation to where and what the team represents! A hurricane flag, lumberjack, paw print, or just plain letters are way too obvious and not very creative, I think.
I actually agree that a week is way too long, but I get that it takes time to set up. Its just sooooo slow, leads to voting like 10 times
