Tournament Notes The preliminary portion of the AJHL Tournament of Logos wraps up this week. Scroll down to vote in the AJHL mini-tournament.

Tie-breaking Since the playoff format is not points-based, the winning logo will be determined by the total number of votes received rather than the percentage. In the unlikely event of an exact tie, a 24-hour run-off poll will be held the following day. (This will shorten the subsequent round of voting by one day.)

CANUCKS ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

Aug 9 · 10:24 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAustin E.

The Bobcats have the best logo by far!

Aug 9 · 10:44 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJhand

So i am looking at these ajhl logo's and i am just curious what with all the trademarked logo's being stolen and altered as of late on this page does anyone notice the similarities between the Drayton Vally Thunder logo and the old wcw logo click here to see.

Aug 9 · 11:54 AM PDT | Unregistered Commentervisageart

Well, I don't think there was any doubt as to what two shoulder patches would be i the final. Having said that, I don't get what everyone's fascination with the Johnny V logo is. It's not a great stand-alone logo. Sure, it's better than what the Canucks wear on the front of their jerseys (Stick and Orca), but that's not really saying alot. Both of the Canucks primary logos are hideous. I have rock formations in my back alley that are more interesting than either of those logos. So, sure, in comparison to the Vancouver primaries, Johnny V looks pretty cool, but up against a logo as epic as the Weagle, it's just another crap attempt for Van-City to find an identity. They should go back to the Bure era black/orange/yellow uniforms. At least those were unique.

Aug 9 · 12:09 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterDevin Bateman

Weagle all the way. and the pontiacs is he best of the ajhl

Aug 9 · 12:27 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterHollywood

I hope the weagle wins so that the Canucks don't make a horrible decision in putting Johnny Canuck as the primary.

Aug 9 · 12:30 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterBUREV

I am a Canucks fan and although I don't mind that Johnny Canuck logo, I don't love it like I do their stick-in-rink logo. I prefer this Johnny Canuck over the orca, but that isn't too difficult. I would be disappointed if it ended up as their primary rather than going to the stick-in-rink. In fact, the best would be to go back to their just released vintage jerseys. Those are things of beauty.

Anyway, I vote for the Weagle for sure. It is a fantastic logo.

Aug 9 · 1:03 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterNathan

I love Johnny Canuck, but if it loses to the Weagle, there's no shame in that.

Aug 9 · 1:14 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJim

IMO, that is the best new logo the Canucks have released in the last 15 years or so. Johnny Canuck, Stick in the rink, I don't care, just get rid of the Orca already, and wear the same jersey longer than 10 years.

Aug 9 · 1:37 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMatt

So it seems that everyone is in agreement then. Weagle = Awesome.

Aug 9 · 1:42 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterLee

Caps. And I'm a Canucks fan. JC might be pretty awesome, but the Weagle just can't be topped. End of story.

Aug 9 · 2:28 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJacques-Andre LeBeau

Personally I think the Johnny Canuck logo (Whether the V one or full body) would work on a primary but I think it fits a third jersey role better. A green one at that.

Anyways I am a 'Nucks fan obviously, but the Weagle wins, it has some many elements in one logo. It should be the Caps primary, not that wordmark.

Aug 9 · 3:27 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterEvan

I love that Johnny Canuck V logo, but it's got some serious competition going up against that great Weagle logo. I admitt, my vote was a biased one, but I wouldn't be too dissapointed if it dosn't win. I really do hope the Canucks will drop the Orca logo soon, in favor of either the Johnny V logo or the stick in rink as the primary, those to logos look real good together. I've always hated the Canucks Orca logo.

Aug 9 · 4:58 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMatt Marczel

Just posted my vote for the Johnny Canuck V! However, the Weagle is a great logo as well and it should have been the Caps' new crest back in '95 instead of going to that hideous black, bronze, and blue mess.

Back to the Canucks, the biggest mistake in club history was not going with Johnny Canuck from Day One. The JCV has that simplicity that the Stick 'n Rink has and it is the only V logo in North American pro sports. However, if I had to choose, I would go with the full-body Johnny as the primary on navy blue with the same template as the current third jersey with the JCV on a third green jersey. Good riddance to the orca C once it's officially gone.

Aug 9 · 5:29 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAndre

The Weagle better win. Just say no to the Vachon Cakes logo.

Aug 9 · 5:29 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterbreaktheice

@Breaktheice,

The Johnny Canuck V is the Johnny Canuck V. V for Vancouver with the head of Johnny Canuck. It's blue, green, and white with a touch of silver. The Vachon Cakes logo is red and black with a baker eating his brand. And most people in North America don't even know about that so-called French Canadian food company. The Chicago Blackhawks and the Washington Redskings have more similarities between their logos.

Aug 9 · 5:46 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAndre

I dont see the attraction to the Johnny V logo. Its too cartoonish and seems outdated. I dont think anybody outside of Vancouver really cares for it. With that said, the orca isnt much better. Though with the name Canucks, it does seem hard to come up with a logo that truly stands for the team. I dont think the Weagle is the greatest logo ever, but it is creative and visually appealing and gets my vote.

I know we have to do the voting to keep it all fair, but who didnt think that Buffalo would win the 3rd jersey tourney and the Weagle would win this one.

Aug 9 · 6:18 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterSharkFan

I guess I'm the only one who loves the Vancouver Orca logo.

Aug 9 · 8:15 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterRobertson

I like the orca logo too.

Aug 9 · 8:21 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterjesse

I love the Orca Logo

Aug 9 · 9:37 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterRyan Smyth

Why do teams in the AJHL named after bears have such hilarious crests? The Olds Grizzly looks like it's yelling "COOKIES!". And the Camrose Kodiak looks like it's going "Hi guys!".

Aug 9 · 10:21 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterTrick Rider

I also think that the Canucks should stick with the orca. First: it is far better than Johnny Canuck, hands down. And second: the orca has been the teams identity for the last 13 or so years. And third: everyone complains on how much the Canucks change their logos and jerseys, so why change it again? It works. If they are to ever change it, it should be at the 50th anniversary, not now when they have only had this jersey for 4 years and have just created a vintage jersey. Just keep it the way it is for God's sake!

Aug 9 · 11:12 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterBUREV

I Love the Orca Logo as well and will be very sad if it ever does get ousted. I hate the original stick in rink logo i think it looks like a pile of barf. I don't mind the Jonny v or the full body johnny. hell the modern retro logo is ok as an alternate has a little more character and i adore the skate. I think that the nucks should just stick with the Orca and since they are such whores for merch and we fans just yum it up, keep the Orca as primary and then develop a few alternates that incorporate everyone's fave eras and cycle them around every few seasons. oh wait that seems to be more or less what they are doing right now. Keep it up Canucks. And Make us Proud finally i have followed you my whole life and loved you every step of the way even if and when you lose. Just win one Stanley Cup, that's all I ask.

Aug 9 · 11:27 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterPavel Bure

I realize that people are entitled to their opinions, considering that the Canucks have had so many looks throughout their history. But the FACT of the matter is that the team is called "Canucks". The franchise, when based in the old Pacific Coast Hockey League(later Western Hockey League), chose the name "Canucks" because of the inspiration of Johnny Canuck, used by the Canadian Armed Forces during both World Wars. The Canucks won 6 WHL titles in their 25 seasons in the PCHL/WHL. Yes, Johnny Canuck does have a cartoony look, but it doesn't look overly animated and Disney-like. The city of Vancouver was also built through British Columbia's rich lumber industry. The orca may have a west coast flavour, but the team is not called "Orcas". Canucks is a great name for a Canadian-based hockey club and there is no better logo than Canada's fictional folk hero who bears the Canuck name. It's got great history and not having it from Day One in 1970 was a much greater mistake than the ill-advised Cam Neely trade.

Aug 9 · 11:37 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAndre

@Andre- Very well said buddy!!

The Capitals logo(eagle=washington=obvious) and Sharks(well enough said) logo aren't at all appealing, they're too common and not all unique. At least the Canucks logo goes outside the box and is unique.

Aug 10 · 12:26 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenteryeahisaidit

@Burev- i don't if you meant to say 40 years or 4 years?!? but just in case, the Canucks have been in the NHL for 40 years this upcoming season!!

Aug 10 · 12:27 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenteryeahisaidit

OK, being from Vancouver I do understand the franchise does have a rich tradition going back to the old WHL days and I understand where the name Johnny Canuck comes from. That being said, the NHL Canucks franchise has NEVER had any kind of decent identity. It is a team with an identity crisis. The only reason the "stick and rink" logo is popular here is it nostalgia factor and the fact that retro is in. But, really, if that logo was presented to the team today, the creator would be laughed right out of town. Its interesting that both the original Canuck logo and the Nordiques logo were created around the same time. Both are terrible. I guess minimalism was in then. Then we had the "downhill skate". A mess. Then came Orca Bay's purchase of the team and the corporate branding of its newly acquired hockey team. Good God.
I make fun of this shoulder logo because it seems like a lazy-assed attempt at trying to combine the original stick and rink with Johnny Canuck. And it fails miserably. Not only that, it looks a lot like the creator got the idea of the design from Vachon Cakes, a Canadian food company. I don't care that no one in North America knows this, I can see it for myself. If the team came up with a logo that's similar to what Luongo wears on his mask, then I would be pleased with that.

Aug 10 · 1:23 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterbreaktheice

@Andre: I do agree with your last statement. The plan not to go with some sort of creative Johnny Canuck logo from the get-go is at least on par with the mistake of sending Cam Neely to Boston.

Aug 10 · 1:27 AM PDT | Unregistered Commenterbreaktheice

The "V" is just god awful, it's like a giant plant eating a lumberjack. Compare the pics on here "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Canuck" to the Canucks version, not even close, the logo they use should be more associated with Paul Bunyan.

That said, use the current colour scheme with the 90's skate and you've got a winner.

THAT said, the Weagle should win this in a landslide assuming we don't get a sudden ballot stuffing the way we did when they beat the Sharks alt in the semi's. Eagle and a negative space Capitol Building, far better than Paul Bunyan being eaten alive by half a pacman.

Aug 10 · 7:02 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterIan K

@Breaktheice,

I don't disagree that there is "some" sort of resemblence between the Johnny Canuck V and the Vachon Cakes logo. However, it wasn't the Canucks' intention of copying Vachon. As you have seen, Johnny Canuck skates to the right. Well, Johnny's head also looks to the right on top of the V for Vancouver. This is all a coincidence. Remember when the Jacksonville Jaguars had to change their original logo because it looked too similiar to the Jaguar car company? If the Canucks really intended to copy Vachon, they would have had a lawsuit on their hands. The JCV was created to match the modified Stick 'n Rink on the current thirds. You can never go wrong with consistancy on a uniform. I fell in love with this logo from the very moment I first saw it and Vachon never even crossed my mind. I also believe that Vachon changed their logo. At times, there is going to be some resemblence between logos. The Edmonton Eskimos and the Green Bay Packers have almost the exact same uniforms and logo. But those two play in separate leagues. The Chicago Bears and the Cincinnatti Reds have the same C logo. Again, separate leagues and separate sports.

From what I think, the Canucks will use the full-body version as their primary in a year or two, with the JCV on the shoulders to match the full-body version.

Cheers! :)

The Weagle reeks of sucktitude.

Aug 10 · 8:08 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterMoosey G

Being a Caps fan, I'm obviously biased. But the Weagle is more than just a nifty bird. My favorite part is the silhouette of the Capitol building formed in the negative space below it.

Aug 10 · 9:09 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJake Shapiro

so i guess i'm the only one who is taken by just how bad these two logos really are, as far as a championship match-up goes. really, these are the best two shoulder logos in the league? horrible.

It's "Grizzlies" *NOT "Grizzlys"

lol. I can't spell either. Meant "vote," ...LOL!

Aug 10 · 10:04 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterHockeyFan2243

I personally think it should have been the Kings and Blue Jackets logos in the final they are both better than these logos.

Aug 10 · 11:12 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterLucas

@ YEAHISAIDIT

I know that the Canucks are having their 40th season now, but I was referring to the fact that they have only had the blue and green orca jersey for 4 years, and therefore it is too early to change it.

Aug 10 · 10:29 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterBUREV

And for everyone who thinks that a team's logo has to match their team's name(I'm referring to all the orca haters) then you should hate these team's logos as well:

sabres- (I know they're changing it) but it is still just a buffalo.
bruins- where's the bruin in the logo?
hurricanes- doesn't look like a hurricane to me.
blue jackets- a blue jacket is a type of bug(hence the secondary logo they used to have).
predators- technically it's a sabretooth tiger, not just a predator.
And don't forget all the teams that are just wordmarks, such as ducks, stars, oilers, isles, rangers, leafs, and caps.

I am exaggerating on some of these, but that's what all the orca haters are essentially saying.

By the way, I'm not trying to sound rude, I am just trying to get my point across.

Aug 10 · 10:46 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterBUREV

i think moosey really likes the weagle, probably a pens fan.

Aug 11 · 6:02 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterHollywood

Weagle all the way.

Now, if it had been the Canucks' Orca logo, I might have been hard-pressed... but that one is goofy-looking.

Aug 11 · 6:34 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterIRockTheRed

@ Burev,

There is no type of bug called a "Blue Jacket" you're thinking of a Yellow Jacket, a type of wasp, a Blue Jacket was a warchief of a native tribe located in (wait for it) Ohio! The name was then adopted during a war in Ohio for land, therefore the Revolutionary War hat, and the Ohio state flag are perfectly appropriate. Please don't bring "Stinger" into this debate, that thing was awful.

Aug 11 · 7:32 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterIan K

Why is the final not showing a current vote tally?

Aug 11 · 9:11 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymousPucker

@iank--

That hat isn't from the revolutionary war. That's a Bluecoat hat from the civil war.

Revolutionary "infantry" hats were triangular in shape.

Aug 11 · 9:13 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterAnonymousPucker

Everyone should do a Google image search for "Vachon Foods logo" to see where the Canucks stole their 3rd logo from.

Aug 11 · 11:00 AM PDT | Unregistered CommenterJPipe

@ Anonymouspucker,

My mistake, thanks for correcting it, my point is still there though, the hat and flag are appropriate, "Stinger" was not.

Aug 11 · 1:36 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterIan K

@JPipe

Andre already posted a great write up (if you read a few comments back, which you obiously didn't) about how it obviously wasn't the Canucks' intention to copy Vachon. It was a complete coincidence, and no lawsuit has been launched.

Like it or not, Johnny Canuck is what the team was named after. As such, he should be part of the team's identity in some way.

Aug 11 · 4:19 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterEvan

actually as it turns out Canuck is a term that was coined in the 19th century as a slang tern for Canadian, Johnny Canuck was a comic about a WWII Canadian Air Force Pilot. The Vancouver Canucks were named Because the term refers to them being a Canadian Team, and they based their Old Johnny Canuck Logo around that. But they got it wrong because Johnny was a Fighter Pilot not a Lumberjack. Back in the early days of this site there was a logo that depicted Johnny as the pilot which was quite a nice rendition. So although the Orca really doesn't have a lot to do with being a Canuck, it is significant of the art style of the Native Americans that inhabit that region of British Columbia, and also it is significant of the oceanic wild life that inhabits the Pacific Ocean near Vancouver. If the Canucks wish to have a logo that is significant to their name they should have something Canadian about their logo. Since most of the Canadian type symbols are used, the Orca in my opinion works. The new modern retro logo and the Johnny Canuck logo's also work. I think that they should stick with what they have now and pay homage to their heritage with alternate jerseys, and shoulder patches. I hope things stay exactly the way they are for a long time to come.

Aug 11 · 6:08 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterPavel Bure

PONTIACS!!!! best logo, but the saints is a close second, too bad they are against eachother this week

Aug 11 · 7:26 PM PDT | Unregistered CommenterEBS

@yeahisaidit--The Weagle is unique because it's a hidden W (and an actual logo rather than a cartoon character). The Johnny Canuck logo is a decapitated head on top of a V.

You're choice. :-)

Aug 11 · 8:35 PM PDT | Unregistered Commenterexwhaler

@Pavel Bure,

Johnny Canuck was indeed a lumberjack as well as a pilot. Here's part of the article from Wikipedia:

Johnny Canuck was created as a lumberjack national personification of Canada. He first appeared in early political cartoons dating to 1869 where he was portrayed as a younger cousin of the United States' Uncle Sam and Britain's John Bull. Dressed as a habitant, farmer, logger, rancher or soldier, he was characterized as wholesome and simple-minded and was often depicted resisting the bullying of John Bull or Uncle Sam. He appeared regularly in editorial cartoons for 30 years before declining in usage in the early twentieth century.1

Because the Canucks are based in Vancouver, it makes perfect sense for the Canucks to have the lumberjack version of JC. I don't disagree with the argument about the orca symbolizing Vancouver's Native American heritage as well as it being a symbol of the Pacific Northwest. However, the orca was put on the Canucks' uniforms in '97 because of former ownership group, Orca Bay. Orca Bay disregarded the Canucks' history and did nothing but create an ice-cold corporate atmosphere at Canuck games and in the organization with their "Orca Bay" way. That's why most Canuck fans like myself dislike the orca so much. I remember when the team had the Speeding Skate, which I had liked. When there was talk of phasing out the Skate, I wasn't keen on having a lumberjack over a stylized letter or wordmark logo at first. However, being the proud Canucks fan that I am, I realized how much history Johnny Canuck has, going back to the late 1800s. From that point on, I have been a Johnny Canuck activist ever since. Once JC is made as the primary crest of the Canucks, there will be absolute NO more primary uniform changes. Like I had mentioned in an earlier post, JC may have a cartoony look, but it doesn't look overly animated and Disney-like. I hope this makes sense to those in doubt.
P.S. @Yeah I Said It and Evan, thanks for your support and backing me up. Cheers! :D
