I like the Francis Matte design at the top, but there's one problem I have with it. It looks like it represents Wales. Nova Scotia means New Scotland. Nova Scotia's flag is blue and white. Those are the colours I think that should be present in that logo set.
Great work however.
The blue dragon in the maple leaf may be one of the best logos ever on this entire site. It's not just awesome, it's wicked awesome. Amazing! Great job!!
Number 1 by Francis Matte is just superb. Love the tie-in of Nova Scotia with the Cross of St Andrew in the primary logo. The wordmark is very good too; I'm pretty sure I've seen that font used before on touristy stuff I've bought in Wales. The red, green and white is very Welsh too (think I suggested that somewhere...haha) so I like it. A lot.
@ TP71
I kinda thought the same thing initially as well: he's got Scotland and Wales mixed up! However, Halifax obviously has a strong relationship with Britain in general. The colour scheme, it could be argued, also ties in elements of the English flag (red/white) as well as the preminent Irish colour of Green. So at first viewing it sort of does look like its mixed up but on deeper inspection it actually brings all of the UK heritage together and creates its own style :)
I knew that this team was going to inspire artists and it was the one team I was looking forward to the most.
14 selections, and at least half I think could make this team awesome.
Kudos to all, there are a few I can see winning but hands down the Francis Matte design is just screaming to be put on a jersey, hell I see potential for Rinkgear production if it is selected. The colors pop and that red dragon on a green backing, just excellent.
Yes, there is the whole Wales/Scotland issue but personally I couldn't care less. (My family has the blood of both but being born close to Cardiff probably doesn't help my argument...)
Francis Mattes set is just great, some how makes it all work when you'd think it would be too cluttered. I would enjoy seeing a Blue/White version as well, the current colours are the same or at least similar to the Mooseheads but that really doesnt matter.
Arian Durst also has some great work, nice and simple!
A few more stand out like Liam Peacocks (would love to see a secondary logo with the set) and Matt McElroys (is the dragon wearing sunglasses?).
I'm just not feeling the love for Francis Matte's set. I think the more "edgy" sets of Morgan, Rosinski, and especially Feltner's design could look sharp on a sweater.
I feel like Liam Peacock's is being really undervalued here. I can see that primary on the front of a uniform, it has a very classic look.
Francis Matte's on this is great love the medieval feel but its not to a point where it becomes campy. The secondariness are great as well. I feel like if there were time to refine and this one got pick moving to Blue and white and getting red of the gradients and this would be in the league for a long time.
@Ed P- HAHA no, no sunglasses here just different color around the eyes. I wanted the yellow in more places than just the fins on the side of the head.
I'm really surprised not to hear more love for Jesse Feltner's entry. That's a well thought-out and beautiful concept.
A lot of the Dragon logos have two eyes and two horns - perfect for the lower-case "h-d" on the face. This concept looks a lot better in my mind than on the screen.
I really love old-school team using one color - Red Wings, Maple Leafs, Celtics, Colts. Gimme the Dragons in green and white - nothing else. Notice that a handful of recent designs emphasize one main color: new green Stars (no outline on numbers?), red Hurricanes, blue Lightning, red Coyotes...
I like Andy Petzold's here, as well as Jesse Feltner's. Francis Matte's is way too Welsh, and the word mark screams tv show to me, but I can't think which one. Law and Order?
@Jesse Feltner,
I like your logo set a lot, but don't understand the choice of colors. Any line of thinking with the blue and orange? Wish we could see that leaf and dragon in red and green.
Kudos to everyone who submitted. It's been a lot of fun to have so many logos to look through and vote on.
@Chris Rosinski: I just wanted an original color scheme. That's the answer, pure and simple. I thought that this team would be saturated with green concepts so I went the deep teal route and combined it with copper and black. I wish I had a more "scientific" answer for my choice than that, but I don't. And thanks to everyone that had good words for my concept and I think all the concepts have something positive going for them.
Francis has potential but it's way to similar to Liverpool. Jesse Feltner has it for me even though I think it could use somes tweaks.
It may be the colors or the large D, but Chris has designs that remind me of the New Jersey Devils. As I scan all of the logos, his really catches my eye all the time. Which is a good thing...
Jesse's got a great maple leaf concept - very clever. Francis has the winner, but I'm leery of the gradation.
@Simon,
Thanks for the comment. Thankfully they switched to black because red and green wasn't quite right for the NJ Devils. For the Dragons though I love the color combo and the different red/green variations the designers have tried. What I was curious about is whether people would immediately see the cursive D in the primary logo or if it takes a couple looks.
Francis has the prettiest logo here, so I figure it will probably win. Personally, I have trouble getting over the obvious Welshness of the logo. Chris Rosinski and Jesse Feltner have some great logos though, that are very underrated judging from these votes. I'd really like to see either of those two win.
I like Francis' primary and don't think it has to be blue because it uses St. Andrews cross. I'm sure he picked the colors based on the team name and not the flag of Wales, etc. The secondary logos could use some work though IMO. The one seems kind of haphazard so maybe they can get a rework during the next stage. Also, I think the sports abbreviations for Halifax teams is "HFX" compared to the governmental HAL. Thanks as well March!
For Halifax, there are some really interesting submissions here, topped by Francis Matte, Arian Durst and Jesse Feltner.
Matte's logo treatment is just bad-ass. Looks great and it's a wonderful usage of the colors--using red and green call fall prey to looking Christmassy (Paging the Minnesota Wild) but this doesn't.
Durst's logo is nice and simple and is a good take on the dragon. I personally think this logo is quite good-looking and I'm surprised it's not getting as much love.
Feltner's logo is really interesting and the color use here is actually quite good looking--I don't know if it would look as good in the same color scheme as, say Matte's or Durst's.
