Just To Freak You Out XXIV

Can you believe yet another Friday is already upon us? I've had a long day (which began with me waking up at 1 AM) so forgive me if I make this a quick one. Just trying to freak you out a little.

Last week's theme was crazy logos. This week's theme is crazy jerseys. For instance, what if when the Quebec Nordiques moved to Denver, they opted not to change their name or logo — just their colors?

Yep, that would've happened. Good guess.

I think this next one was submitted as a Dallas Stars concept, but I don't really get it.

Are all Texans also banditos? On second thought, don't answer that.

This next one is a little disturbing.

Blood in the water.

I posted a concept Lightning logo a couple weeks ago. Here are the jerseys that go with it.

I'm still not a fan.

Giant hockey player... smash!

And what sort of person would I be if I didn't work in some Vancouver Canucks art? (Yes, arguably the most well-represented club on this blog much to the dismay of a handful of you.)

The weird thing is I sort of like the whales. Here's what I really don't like.

And finally, I've got this logo that serves as a great followup to last week's insane logo fusions.

There's why the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings will never merge. The logo just wouldn't work as you can plainly see.

So it turns out this post was a little longer than I planned. I impress myself. By the way, at some point this weekend I hope to update the Concepts Gallery as I have over 100 images waiting to be added. I'll let you know when I get it done.

Hope you enjoyed the 24th Freak Out post. See you again right here next week!

Just To Freak You Out XXII

I can't believe how long this series has lasted. At 22 and still going strong, what follows is another edition of Freak Out Friday. Where do I begin?

I think I'll start with a play on the Winter Classic which took place this week. It's an "If They Mated" featuring the two teams involved in the big outdoor game.

Curiously though, while the designer went with the original Sabres logo, they opted against the original Penguins colors.

Now is where I really get into the scary stuff, so be warned.

Though well executed, that can't be a good idea. Speaking of which...

Let the eye-gouging begin. It makes great use of the Panthers' colors but what is with all the suns? We get it they're the Florida Panthers!

Here's what we need.

Because nothing says we're getting rolled over like a jersey with tire tracks. A sentiment less suited for the Red Wings (first place) and more so for the Lightning (last place) who can't seem to remember how to win games. But I'm not bitter.

Speaking of the lackluster Lightning, the one color I hope is never incorporated into the Bolts' identity is yellow.

Did I mention how I hate the yellow?

And finally, it appears that not a lot of effort was put into this, but I thought the logo was funny enough to revisit.

Keep the crazy artwork coming so I can continue to frighten and freak out the readers here at NHLToL. Enjoy your weekend!

Just To Freak You Out XXI

The Freak Out series hits 21 this week — old enough to get hammered. And boy, I think some of the designers this week had to have been hammered. I mean, just look at this.

It might take a moment or two to notice that this is an "If They Mated" example. It's the new Sharks secondary logo merged with the Mighty Ducks third jersey of the mid-90s. But I love it!

This Flames jersey is on fire! Someone on eBay is really selling it. For real.

Sidney Crosby recently dropped the gloves in a rare on-ice event. This picture isn't real but it cracks me up nonetheless. There's just so much about it that's so wrong. I'm curious to see if the guys over at Pensblog have anything to say about this.

And finally, we have a plethora of "matings" here to share.

To sum things up, what you see above is the Flyers and Bruins, Rangers and Islanders, Devils and Sabres, Blue Jackets and Blackhawks, Avalanche and Wild, Blues and Red Wings, Canucks and Hurricanes (weird!), Bruins and Flyers (opposite of the first one) and Stars and Coyotes.

But wait, there's more.

This one is interesting because it's all opposites of the previous image. They are the Coyotes and Stars, Blackhawks and Blue Jackets, Hurricanes and Canucks, Islanders and Rangers, Sabres and Devils, Red Wings and Blues (what the—?), and Wild and Avalanche.

Hope you enjoyed being freaked out. Have a fantastic weekend!

The Finer Art

A lot of the concept artwork I feature here on a daily basis is created by amateurs. It's fairly obvious and I think even the designers themselves wouldn't take offense to my saying that. But every so often, I come across work that could only have been created by a professional. It's the reason I have a blog like this.

The template used for these concept designs is probably as close to perfect as we're going to get, visually speaking. I don't know the identity of the artist, but the work is stunning. I'll kick things off with my team — which I haven't really talked much about lately.

Personally, I love this idea. A new logo like this would certainly take some getting used to but the light blue on black accented by silver looks great! I'm also a big fan of the throwback numbers on the blue third jersey and the lightning bolts around the shoulders. Anyone feel like painting one of these onto a photo of a Lightning player?

Next here we see an interesting take on the Dallas Stars' logo. I like it but proportionately it seems a bit... off. I think the city name above the logo needs to be in a smaller, wider type. Otherwise, I think the jersey striping looks fantastic and that gold third jersey would definitely get my vote.

I love the striping on these Rangers jerseys, but the New York across the front isn't working for me. Swap it out with the Lady Liberty logo and I'm pretty sure nothing could compete with that look. I'm a little confused by the Maple Leafs lettering on the back of the jersey, however. Speaking of the Leafs...

The accent striping isn't much but it adds a lot to what are otherwise rather plain jerseys. Will it happen? No. But I think all of these are interesting to consider.

Lastly, we have an Ottawa Senators concept with a complete overhaul.

I think the logo would be better if the cape were either smaller or gone. It creates bad negative space. But once again I think the striping is excellent. Overall though, not a bad direction. By the way, I added Anton Volchenkov to my fantasy team. He hasn't really done anything for me yet.

Anyway, that's all for right now. I'll have some more rather brilliant work tomorrow as we stick to the more professional-looking designs this weekend. Hint: GhettoFarmBoy is back at it again.

Concepts In The Stars

Every so often, I get emailed a concept design that just looks simply amazing. Let me share the most recent piece I'd categorize that way.

Obviously, we're talking about the Dallas Stars today. And while I'm a fan of their new uniforms and the simplicity seen there, I would be among the last to object an overhaul. For instance, I feel a green jersey is exactly the way for this team to go. And while I don't think the logo seen here is perfect, it's a step in the right direction. I really like the secondary logo, though.

Anyway, this is what I like. Sharp graphics and folks getting creative. It almost makes me want to do a concept contest of some sort. The winner would get nothing but bragging rights, but I bet we'd see some amazing work along the way. Let me know in the comments if that sounds like something you guys would be interested in.

Continuing with today's theme now.

This is a nice set. I like the idea of using the bull/consellation logo on the shoulders of the black jersey. The red seems a bit out of place though.

And finally, here's a nice way to improve on the road sweater.

Just a little more color makes the jersey seem a lot less ... white. A bit more interesting to look at, to be sure.

Overall, I like what all of the artists have done here. Top notch work.

Out West!

We're heading out west for some concept art this morning. I figure we'll start at the coast and work our way east.

The Anaheim Ducks concept suggests workinng green back into the color scheme. I think that would be a wise move, but maybe something a little brighter would be in order. I do like the "D" logo on the chest as well. Definitely an improvement.

Another designer has also suggested that the Sharks try out black sweaters — be it on a full-time or part-time basis. This isn't half bad. The orange works very nice in this concept. Pretty sharp.

Here's a new design created for the Dallas Stars.

It's so weird looking. You really have to stare at it a minute. The stripes around the bottom are odd. Looks like they're going to eat me. Anyway, we'll finish things off in Tennessee with the Nashville Predators.

Also weird, but not quite enough to freak me out. I sort of hope that thing in the bottom left corner isn't meant to be a logo of any sort. That would freak me out. Anyway, not a terrible jersey, but also not one I'd be a fan of.

If you've got thoughts on any of these, feel free to leave them below.

Rbk EDGE Review: Stars

Part 27 of 30. All 30 NHL clubs have unveiled new jerseys under the new Rbk EDGE Uniform System for the 2007-08 season. Here at the NHLToL, we're going to review every one of them. Read up and then rate the new sweaters. We'll do a full ranking after completing all of the reviews.

Dallas Stars

New Uniforms

Old Uniforms

The Unveiling
Friday, September 14. The Stars unveiled their jerseys at a fan event in Dallas.

Home vs. Road
Home: Black. Road: White. The two sweaters are similar in striping pattern only, but are otherwise very different.

The black home jerseys feature two thin white-gold stripes with a wide gap between them around the elbows. The word "DALLAS" is white letters with gold trim is arched above the player's sweater number on the chest. The primary logo is featured as a shoulder patch. The collar is white with black trim on the inside.

The white road jerseys feature two thin green-gold stripes with a wide gap between them around the elbows. Gold-green trim wraps around the waist at the very bottom of the sweater. The secondary logo is featured as a shoulder patch. The collar is green with gold trim on the inside and the primary logo serves as the crest.

In The Details
The Stars are one of a handful of teams with crests differing between the home and road sweaters. They also join the Rangers as the only teams to have a jersey without a logo on the front. The same numbering and lettering style has been retained.

New & Old
The new uniforms have been designed completely different from the old ones. The star shape that spanned the entire sweater is now gone and there isn't even a logo on the dark jersey — which is now almost completely black instead of green.

Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? Yes.
Laces at the collar? No.

NHLToL Editorial by Chris
First off, kudos to the Stars for trying something unique. The black jerseys look simply amazing. While I wouldn't want it to become a league-wide trend, the large number on the front gives the sweaters a great classic feel. However, I'm not as much a fan of the white jerseys. One thing this team missed the boat on was the striping. The stripes are way too thin and do not stand out like they should. To sum up, the minimalist design, I feel, works well on the black jerseys, but not so much on the whites. Still, I feel like it's overall a very nice uniform. 4/5
