Loose Threads: Red and the Rest

Obviously the big news yesterday was the announcement of the sale and intent to relocate the Atlanta Thrashers. But that's not all that went down yesterday. Here's a quick run-through.

Panthers Bringing Back the Red

Panthers 1993-2007 / from Getty ImagesAccording to Miami Herald beat writer George Richards, the Florida Panthers are revisiting the past with new red sweaters starting in the 2011-12 season.

I highly recommend reading his latest On Frozen Pond blog post. But if you can't be bothered, here's some of what he wrote on the subject.

The Panthers are shifting their marketing focus this summer to coincide with their return to their orginal look.

A restyled red jersey will become Florida's primary jersey this season — the first time the red will be the team's primary home jersey since the early 2000s when it was relegated to alternate thirds and then dropped during the Reebok restyle in 2007. I was told Alan Cohen hated the red look, and for parts of his ownership, the team only wore that color on weekends.

I have seen mockups with the new circle logo — which debuted on the Tampa Bay JetBlue thirds — on them although I have been told it will be the leaping cat on the front. Sans stick.

No word on whether the JetBlues will return as the alternate for a third season. Florida may keep the home blue jerseys it has worn since the 2007-08 season as the alternate. When I find out about the thirds, will let you know.

He says the secondary logo — sun with crossed hockey stick and palm tree — will remain on the new sweater, which will be unveiled at the 2011 NHL Entry Draft on June 24. The new draftees will be the first to sport the new design.

So look for lots more red from the Panthers this summer. Personally, I think this is great. Always like the Panthers better in red than navy.

Moves Around the Minors

The rest of this post can be done with bullet points and, since I'm up against the clock, that's a good thing.

• The Telegram in St. John's is reporting that a deal has been reached to relocate the AHL's now homeless Manitoba Moose to Newfoundland for the start of the 2011-12 season. With the acquisition of the Thrashers, True North was obviously eager to unload the minor league franchise that filled Winnipeg's NHL gap for the last 15 years. No word yet on what the team's new name will be. full story
• Chicago Express jerseys unveiled / ExpressThe ECHL's newest expansion team, the Chicago Express is set to begin play in the 2011-12 season. So yesterday, they unveiled the jerseys they'll wear. Unsurprisingly, they're based on the Blackhawks' uniform design in the Express' blue and silver color scheme. They grey third jersey steps outside the box a little bit, but overall an unimpressive set. full story
• In other ECHL news, the league approved the membership of the Colorado Eagles, formerly of the Central Hockey League. With the folding of the Victoria Salmon Kings and the addition of the Express and Eagles, the ECHL will begin play with 20 teams this fall. full story
• Joining Victoria and Atlanta in losing hockey teams this summer is Lewiston, Maine. The QMJHL's Lewiston MAINEiacs have folded and the league announced that in 2012, it will expand to Sherbrooke, Quebec — which is actually where the MAINEiacs relocated from in 2003. Ouch. full story

B-Sens Sport Ottawa Throwbacks

B-Sens throwbacks / photo by Just Sports PhotographyThe AHL's Binghamton Senators hit the ice last week looking about 100 years old — at least as far as their uniforms went.

On Saturday, the B-Sens wore striped specialty jerseys that paid tribute to the original incarnation of the NHL's Ottawa Senators from 1930s — complete with the barber-pole stripes and the big O. While wearing them, the Senators beat the Rochester Americans 2-1.

For the record, I would've posted this sooner, but you may have noticed the All-Star jerseys took center stage this week. So we go from super-futuristic to super-old today.

The game-worn sweaters are currently up for auction on NHL.com by MeiGray.

So the question is this: Should we expect to see these in Ottawa at some point to come? And while I can't answer that for certain, I can tell you the SENS jersey is going away.

Multiple sources suggest that a new alternate sweater is in the works for the Senators, being prepared for a 2011-12 launch. Many fans have been pushing for a throwback jersey for years, especially concept designer Jacob Barrette. His design is absolutely outstanding.

It's unknown what the new third jersey would look like, but I do hope they avoid the B-Sens' throwback. The Montreal Canadiens did something similar for their 100th anniversary and it did not turn out well. It's fine for a game or two, but let's not make a habit of it.

There were a couple of links I forgot to include when I posted this yesterday. First, the Ottawa Senators posted a photo gallery on their website from the Binghamton-Rochester game. So if you want to see more, that's where to go.

Also, the blog Sens Town did a write-up on the specialty jersey in advance of the game last week. They express their disappointment that the farm club beat Ottawa to the punch on these throwbacks — among other complaints. But the way I see, Binghamton was a test market. Say what you like about the NHL, but at least they don't go all willy-nilly with the specialty jerseys — regardless of what charities may benefit. Structure is good. My two cents.

The Modesty of the Hershey Bears

Wait, that's not right. I meant "immodesty."

Bears sport Moose patch / photo by Winnipeg Free PressGary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press wrote today about how the Hershey Bears are flaunting their recent championship victories over the Manitoba Moose and Texas Stars with patches on their jerseys, reminiscent of notches on a bedpost.

Warning: The rest of this post features opinions you may or may not agree with. Proceed cautiously.

In his article, Lawless thrashes the arrogance of an organization that — despite a rich and classy hockey history — would resort to such childish behavior. I can understand why he'd see it that way. I'm kind of appalled, myself, to be honest.

On the other hand, who says teams have to be gracious in victory? Being classy is overrated. A hockey championship is a long, hard-fought physical/emotional/mental battle. That's just how it is. It's not easy, to say the least. Why should you keep your excitement to yourself when you do win? And on the other side of the coin, who says losing teams have to keep their chins up?

You have bad losers — like the Pittsburgh Penguins refusing to shake hands with the Washington Capitals after their Winter Classic defeat. And you have bad winners — like Penguins fans, who chanted Steven Stamkos' name after an embarrassing fall during a penalty shot amidst an 8-1 Pens victory. Was that necessary? No, but there's nothing wrong with not being classy. This is a sport played by grown men. It's not a debutante ball.

But I seem to have gotten a little off track. I'm not saying it's a classy move for the Bears to brag about their championships by wearing the logos of their victims. I'm just saying it doesn't matter if it's classy. The only thing getting hurt by a patch is feelings. Time to be an adult.

Still... there's a certain level of pettiness that goes with this kind of bravado. If you're going to take the low road, be prepared for the steep drop in respect that follows. And that's what this story is really about. It's hard to have respect for a team that doesn't know how to win well.

That's where I stand. I have no problem with what the Bears are doing, but I certainly wouldn't do it. I'm curious to see how the rest of you feel. Is being classy important to hockey? Do you feel that it in some ways separates our sport from others? Or should we all just get a thicker skin?

Rangers Unveil Heritage Jersey!

The New York Rangers officially unveiled their new Heritage Jersey tonight in front of fans gathered at Rockefeller Center.

Rangers unveil Heritage JerseyThe retro look comes as no surprise to anyone who saw the photo Sean Avery posted on his website in September, but we got a much better look during tonight's unveiling, as seen in above photo of Chris Drury and Henrik Lundqvist.

The new sweater, dubbed the Heritage Blueshirt by team marketing gurus, features darker and more subdued colors than the Rangers' standard palette. The blue is darker, the red is duller and the white is more... vintage.

Across the front reads NEW YORK in red, but in a font more typical of 1920s sweaters and different from what the team currently uses. The right shoulder features the 85th anniversary patch being used on the home and road uniforms this season — but in the "Heritage" color palette.

The surname runs straight across the shoulders, not arched, and the Rangers' retired sweaters numbers are stitched onto the inside hem in the back.

I haven't managed to track down any details on whether this sweater will only be used this season or if it will be the new third jersey indefinitely. Also I don't believe a schedule has been released at this point. To be fair, I haven't looked very hard either.

One more note somewhat related to the Rangers.

Their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack will officially transition to the Connecticut Whale moniker effective Nov. 17. The team is promoting Saturday's game as the Wolf Pack's "last." Last we heard, the change was to happen between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Looks like they got things in order a bit early. Thanks to Alan H. for the tip!

Around the AHL, Again

Last week I said the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins would have their own post later in the week. Well that didn't happen.

The team unveiled three new specialty jerseys over a week ago, each of which pays tribute to a group of public servants who put their lives on the line every day. Photos were posted on Penguins' Twitter account.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins unveil firefighter, police and military jerseys

The firefighter-themed sweater (left) will be worn on Fri., Dec. 3 when the Pens host the Binghamton Senators, who will be wearing their police-themed uniforms that night.

The Penguins also have a police jersey (center) which will be worn once in Binghamton, presumably when the B-Sens will wear a firefighter sweater of their own. There will be one other home date for the Pens' police jersey, but no details have been announced yet.

Finally, the military jersey (right) will be worn on Sat., Feb. 26 when the Baby Pens host the Norfolk Admirals. I'll try to keep an eye on these dates so as to share game action photos at some point.

Sharks debut third jerseyThe Worcester Sharks have debuted their new 5th anniversary alternate jersey.

The new teal sweater is based on their NHL affiliate, the San Jose Sharks, with the anniversary logo on the chest. The uniform hit the ice for the first time on Oct. 23 when the Sharks hosted the Providence Bruins.

Something interesting I've noticed about Worcester's uniforms: While many AHL teams use their NHL affiliate's primary mark as a shoulder patch, the Sharks use shield version which isn't featured on any of San Jose sweaters — only the pants.

Not sure if these jerseys will be used beyond this season. Though if they are, the crest will need replacing. Maybe they can use that shield logo?

Texas Stars' pink jerseyThe Texas Stars held their Pink in the Rink Night on Saturday.

They sported a special sweater to mark the event and unfortunately, this particular pink jersey has to be among the worst we've ever seen.

Maybe it's the shade of pink. Or the ribbon standing in for an A. Hard to be sure. And for the record, the Stars (6-3-0) lost 3-1 to the Houston Aeros (3-5-1) while wearing it. Coincidence?

Milwaukee Admirals' pink jerseyIn stark contrast, the Milwaukee Admirals have put forth one of the best pink jerseys in recent memory.

Their Pink in the Rink Night was held Oct. 23 and they were actually successful, playing to a 3-1 win over the Abbotsford Heat. As is typical, the team is auctioning off the pink sweaters with proceeds benefiting a breast cancer research/awareness organization.

What's weird is that they have one autographed by Felicity Huffman that you can bid on. How random. (Ok, not really if you can read, but whatever.)

But back to what I was saying before. Brilliant job with this design. Sure it's pink, but it doesn't make a spectacle of itself or go out of its way to look feminine. It's still an ice hockey sweater, it just happens to be two-tone pink. Get over it.

Although maybe it's the pirate skull coloring my judgment. Also, it uses the same numbering style as the Tampa Bay Lightning did in the early days. Hm.
