I've been getting some really awesome concept art sent to me lately so let's dive right into some of it, starting in alphabetical order with the Anaheim Ducks.
If this had been sent to me sooner, it would've been part of the Ducks, Here's How You Fix It post from a week ago. That team would look so good in this jersey and I'd eat all my words.
Then I was sent another set that I'm having some difficulty with.
That was making my head spin a little. So as to save me from having to explain it, a description straight from the horse's mouth:
I really wanted to pull together the Ducks' history in the jerseys. I tossed around a lot of ideas but landed on this set of home/away and two alternates. The home and away follow the current script years in Anaheim and I took a page from baseball for having different scripts for home and away. The home jersey features the 04-06 Anaheim script with Ducks in place of Mighty Ducks. The road is basically the current road jersey with an updated name font, captain's "c" and the script/oval logo. Both home and away jerseys feature and interlocking "AD" shoulder patch in the team script as well as front laces.
For the alternate I just changed the current sweaters up a bit but the new shoulder patch, front laces, a recolored Disney logo, and Anaheim, and Ducks wordmarks on the bottom of the home and road jerseys respectively. Just something a little different.
I like the jerseys independently of each other, but together they don't make a good set. I've heard of teams using different logos for their home and away sweaters, but never completely different color schemes. I think your team starts losing its identity when that happens.
I've also got a Dallas Stars concept that puts the state of Texas right on the crest. Not a bad idea, but it should be the white logo. It needs more contrast.
And finally, someone went a little nutty with the look of the Phoenix Coyotes. It's a harsh mix of the old and new.
I'm not really sure I have the words to describe it. Perhaps you do so feel free to leave a comment.
Part 7 of 30. All 30 NHL clubs have unveiled new jerseys under the new Rbk EDGE Uniform System for the 2007-08 season. Here at the NHLToL, we're going to review every one of them. Read up and then rate the new sweaters. We'll do a full ranking after completing all of the reviews.
Home vs. Road
Home: Brick red. Road: White. The two sweaters are essentially mirror images of each other but for the shoulders and both feature secondary logo patches on the left shoulder.
The brick red home jerseys are completely solid in color except for three white stripes around each elbow. The middle stripe is about twice the thickness of the other two. White laces hang from the collar and the primary logo serves as the crest.
The white home jerseys feature a brick red shoulder yoke and three brick red stripes around each elbow. The middle stripe is about twice the thickness of the other two. White laces hang from the collar and the primary logo serves as the crest.
In The Details
The shoulder patch featuring the secondary logo is found only on the left shoulder of each sweater. The same numbering and lettering style has been retained.
New & Old
The biggest differences in the new jerseys are the lack of stripes around the waist and the addition of the shoulder yoke to the road sweater. One minor change seen here is that the shoulder patch has switched sides. It was previously worn on the right shoulder.
Standard FAQ
Numbers on the front? No.
Laces at the collar? Yes.
NHLToL Editorial by Chris
I have to say that I was always among the fools that loved the original Coyotes jerseys. They may have been a little busy, but boy were they unique. They looked like no other team on the ice. I especially liked the old logo as well. I'm not nearly as fond of the new one. Still, it's simplicity that works. I like the addition of the shoulder yoke to the road jersey and I think the "PHX" patch is top-notch. As a uniform, I won't say it's among my favorites, but I respect it. 3/5

All right, if you've been reading for a long time (or even a short time), you probably know about my distaste for the logo many consider to be among the best in sports. That of the Chicago Blackhawks. I just don't see the allure.
You might find it surprising that I don't stand alone. In fact, in the past I've even posted changes folks have made to the logo. Well, I have another one. I still don't love it, but with a little work, I'd call it a big step in the right direction.
Then I thought this one was kind of funny. Not crazy enough to freak anybody out, but definitely different. Imagine the Phoenix Coyotes using both logos together with their current color scheme.
Okay so maybe it is a bit scary. What's not scary is this New York Islanders concept. I don't know. It just feels like such a special thing when you run into a concept this well-designed. Dump the text out of that logo and you've got yourself pure gold.
I like these jerseys so much. Even using the current logo on the shoulder is a great touch. Hell, I could even live with this lighthouse logo as a secondary. But I really do think the Isles should reintroduce something of this nature. I just feel like a lighthouse would make such a great logo for the Isles.
And finally, we go completely off topic here. This is a fan made logo redesign for the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals.
Thought it was pretty decent. It feels a little familiar to me, like I've seen it somewhere before. But that could just be my brain playing tricks.
What do you guys think? Feel free to drop a line in the comments.
I've got a few concept designs for you to check out this afternoon. We'll start way up north in Alberta and work our way south to Arizona.
Here's what one designer had in mind for reconfiguring the Edmonton Oilers' logo and uniforms.
It's an "E" merged with an "O" that, quite frankly, might work better as a secondary logo. That isn't to say that the logo found on the shoulder of this jersey wouldn't work just as well. The one big thing that struck me with the Oilers' new Rbk EDGE jerseys is the plainness. I know a lot of people have been commenting on how some of the new sweaters look like practice jerseys, but for the Oilers, that couldn't be more true. The fact that the elbow stripes don't even go completely around the arm just adds to that.
But anyway, we're talking about this concept. And overall, I like it. The logo could use a splash of creativity, I've seen worse. And the oil drop might be a nice addition to the plain uniforms they have now.
We're moving along to St. Louis now where one fan is mixing the old with the semi-old with the new. Usually when you throw to much stuff in a pot and cook it, the end result is less than delicious. That isn't necessarily the case here, but I don't think the red ever really worked for the Blues.
I think those would be solid designs if the red was removed entirely. Now, here's what you don't want to do — with a third jersey or otherwise.
That'll give a person nightmares. It doesn't go the horrifying length as the alternate Blues sweater Mike Keenan vetoed in the '90s, but it sure is trying. Look at those blue notes across the waist.
I like the idea of a trumpet for a secondary logo, but this really isn't the way to go. And how can a team called the Blues have a dark jersey that's anything but blue?
But I say we move on. A Phoenix Coyotes fan recommends reintroducing green into the color scheme. Here's how.
First off, I'm not sure you can put a team logo above the nameplate and have it look good. Secondly, I'm not sure it's even allowed. However, I think it would look just fine on the shoulder. I still like the PHX patch more, but the moon isn't terrible for the other side.
That's all I've got for now. I plan to have more later. Plus, don't forget to check out the Concepts Gallery where you'll find all the work I've posted plus some I haven't.
At long last, the Phoenix Coyotes have updated their web site to indicate to us that their new Rbk EDGE uniforms have actually been unveiled. Behold the proof.
While no further photos have been posted to the site, I do have a few from the team's press packet so we'll consider them with this being the "official" post on the subject.
They're a little plain but I think that helps accent the logo. They're nowhere near the simplicity of the new Leafs' sweaters — which aren't helped any by the monochromatic logo. It's at least visually interesting to note that the shoulder patch is only on one side. As I pointed out earlier, it switched sides. No word yet on why.
It's a very clean and sharp uniform set and Coyotes fans should be thrilled.
UPDATE (9/16 7:50 AM): The Coyotes finally updated their web site late last night or early this morning with a great photo gallery from CoyotesFest. There were a couple of great action shots in there that really show off these uniforms.
They might be a little plain but they've got that old-time hockey feel and there's nothing wrong with that. One thing I never noticed before (since the Lightning almost never play the Coyotes) is the moon symbol from the original 1996 logo set has been retained on the pants.
Greetings, all. With much thanks to Paul and Wayne for their lightning quick responses to my previous post, we finally have actual photographs of the new uniforms for the Phoenix Coyotes.
We'll start with the NHL.com Shop images. The photos haven't been released on the site yet but have been uploaded to the servers.
The biggest alteration to the sweaters are the brick red sholder yokes now present on the road sweaters. I like that because although it's an irrational thought, I always feel like solid white jerseys blend into the ice too much. Also, the horizontal stripes around the bottom of the jersey are gone.
One more minor note is that the "PHX" patch is now located on the left shoulder. It was moved from the right. Not sure why though.
These photos were just posted over at HFBoards.com so I thought I'd keep them circulating. Apologies for the color. I would've done some retouching, but I just wanted to get them posted quickly.
I feel like the Wizard of Oz standing behind a curtain when I tell you to pay no mind to those iron-on letters that appear to be detaching themselves from the back of this jersey. If I were to guess, I'd say it was worn by a prospect at a recent tournament. Anyone want to confirm?
And as a special treat, our friend Wayne has also dug up the following graphics deep from the bowels of the NHL web servers. Have a look at the Sabres', Rangers' and Devils' new road jerseys.
But wait, if you thought that was it, get ready for this. Here's our first photograph of the Edmonton Oilers' new road sweater.
I just want to know what happened to the sleeves. At least when Florida did the whole interrupted elbow stripes, it was because of a swatch of color riding down the arm. Here, I just don't know. I'll wait to pass judgment until we see more photos.
