Heading Out West
This is the last new concept post until I head out west so I'm making the Western Conference today's theme.
We begin with Mike Ivall, a longtime Icethetics concept contributor. Today we're flashing back to his roots. That first image you see there is, I believe, his first ever concept submission. It was first posted on July 8, 2008 — a year and a half ago. Now he's sharing the fruits of his labor with us. You see that logo embroidered onto a red Blackhawks jersey, proof that perhaps it should one day take its place on an NHL uniform. And if you were wondering what the entire sweater looks like — including its new shoulder patches, just click here. It's really quite something to see an old Icethetics concept come to life that way. As always, great job Mike! |

Sticking with the Blackhawks for a moment. If Mike's red jersey is too drastic a change, then maybe Ryan Haslett's is right on the money. I don't know what it is about the red, black and beige that screams old time Blackhawks hockey to me. I love this design and if it ever became a reality, I might be the first in line to get one — and I don't even like Chicago. Sometimes a jersey design just does something to you, though. |

If you hadn't already noticed, the rest of this post belongs to Ryan. Knowing that the Predators are planning sweeping uniform changes for 2010, he's come up with a simplified uniform design for the Hawks' Central Division rivals. My only concern is that the gold used here may be a little too light. There's not enough contrast for it to be a standout uniform design. Fix that and you may just have a winner on your hands. I'd also consider reverting to the dark blue triangle on the white jersey. I just think it makes for a stronger design. |

Ryan will get us finished up this afternoon way out west in Anaheim. His third jersey concept for the Ducks goes with the beige that slowly seems to be gaining popularity in the NHL as a vintage color — actually called Vintage White by the Boston Bruins. I like the beige and the orange. But I still think the Ducks need to drop the black in favor of a dark forest green. That would really give their identity a complete and unique feel. The one thing I'm not sure about is the use of a wordmark on the front. I think an alternate sweater in Anaheim would provide the ideal opportunity for an alternate logo that actually resembles a duck. An intimidating duck to be sure, but a duck all the same. |
That's it. The next time you see concept art on this page, it will appear as if by magic as I will be far, far away from my computer — and Florida! (Really though, don't forget. New auto-posts every morning at 9 from Friday until Tuesday. I've worked really hard all week to make sure that happens for you guys.)

Wow, I'm a fan of those Pred concepts, but I also agree about the dark blue triangle. And is the gold matte or metallic? That would of course make huge difference
It's weird, I recently saw some kid wearing what appeared to be a minor league jersey with that "black-hawk" on it. Did they steal Mike's design or vice-versa or did he sell it to them? Maybe i'm just crazy.
No i never sold my design to anyone. Where did you see this?
I saw a coach wearing that blackhawk logo on the back of his jacket too. Some AA competitive team in Ottawa.
In Ottawa! Hummm. I had a guy in Ottawa just before Christmas tell me that he wanted to buy my logo.
It's nice to know that people Steal Work from others and say its theirs. This just might stop me from Posting on any site from now on. I'm getting word of this coming from all over. from Freelance retail on the corners in Chicago. to Minor Hockey teams. It makes me sick and pissed off.
Thanks so much Chris!
Hey Mike, I also saw this logo in a Loblaws, west end of Ottawa, about 3 months ago. It was stitched on a hooded sweater I believe, the man wearing it looked to be native, too.
I really like Ryan's idea for new Chicago jerseys. Chicago's current jerseys are not bad, but they are way overrated. If this design was implemented I would consider it the best in the league. It really is time for a jersey completely without any white. The other concepts are pretty solid, but nothing to write home about.
Once again, congrats Chris! The least you can do when all is said and done is post a link to your wedding pics. Have fun in Vegas. Oh, yeah, and I actually remember when Ivall first posted this. (No, I haven't seen it anywhere else)
That Mike Ivall design is really one of my favorites of all time... it looks amazing on a sweater! Wish that could the uni my men's league team could wear!
@ Mike. Assuming you sent your logo off to a company to get them to stitch your logo on that reebok sweater, could it be possible they took that and offered it to other customers without you knowing? Just a thought.
OCONN96, it's far easier than that to rip off a logo. All someone would have to do is just bring in a picture to almost any custom jersey place and they can make an embroidered logo of it and put it on a sweater. Custom logos are made like that for rec teams all the time. So it's probably not the store that did the sweater for Mike that is guilty of it popping up in certain places, but rather some uncreative individuals who wanted a new logo for their teams or to make a buck on someone else's work.
Mike,
I'm also from Ottawa and like Brendan I saw it on some kid's jacket or sweater (I don't think it was a jersey now that I think of it) interestingly also in a Loblaws grocery store like Brendan!
Well i guess it's all good in a way. I did get a offer from some in Ottawa that wanted to buy it from me for 500 bucks. I didn't take it because i know i could make more off it my self. but at least its kind of free publicity in a copyright infringement sort of way.

lots to think about if Mike didn't give these guys the ok to use it. They used part of the spin i put on the logo as well.
Uh, Mike...

Mike: Don't just sit there, tell them!
@Headsigh: In the video description he does say that the Blackhawks alternate was not his work, but he doesn't give Ivall any credit.
i live outside of Chicago and saw Mikes hawks logo in a sports store in a local mall. They were selling it as Blackhawks merchandise. the logo looked familiar to me but i couldnt remember where i saw it. i took a picture of it...
they had it on t-shirts and sweatshirts and stuff.
Mike, if they did steal it, that sucks.
couldn't you take legal measures against the shop owners as soon as the shops are identified? i mean, it's one thing a fan prints it on a shirt for himself or maybe some friends, but a completely different to make profits with your work without sharing them with you. correct me if i 'm wrong, but wouldn't a licensing under the creative commons license help you with legal battles in such cases? as far as i know, there is one type of license that allows personal use but prohibits commercial use by third parties without your agreement. this way you could still post your word on icethetics or puckdrawn and gain feedback and in your case, i guess, even popularity. however, as soon as someone tries to use it commerically and it becomes known, like in this case, you can go after them.
Mike,
I am also from the Chicagoland area and I too have seen your logo floating around the United Center on sweatshirts and t-shirts. I really hope no one stole your work man. It's beautiful stuff and, as a Hawks fan, it makes an outstanding concept.
Good luck!
Jeff,
I'm curious. Where exactly did you find this stuff? Which mall? You can email me if you don't want your approximate location revealed on the net.
Thanks Roccot! Ill be checking into it.
Jeff: Thanks for that image. i feel bad for the people that did buy it! that's a Crappy copy of my logo! lol At least copy it right for crying out loud!!!!!

don,
Vernon Hills.
mike,
im pretty sure there is something in the copyright law that says that if 30% of the image is changed then it cant be claimed as infringement. as to what qualifies 30% is beyond me
The Preds concept looks a lot better than what they wear now. But the Anaheim concept, no offense, but simply horrible. Beige doesn't work at all with the ducks Black/Gold/Orange.
hey Mike, I really like your logo, best thing I seen on here to be honest. But I think it may need something more in order to be the main logo on a sweater. I know the logo is fairly intricate as is, but to my layman's eyes, it just looks like there should maybe be something behind it.
hope ya tracked down the IP thefts!
