0708: Classic '80s Flashback

This takes me back a bit. If you were a hockey fan in the 1980s and early '90s, you no doubt remember this great uniform match-up. David Parkinson had the 2015 Winter Classic in mind when he came up with this one. But frankly, I don't want to see the Flyers in a third outdoor game so soon.

Who would make a good opponent for the Caps?

Anyway, had to track down a photo. That's Craig Berube in the Caps jersey. In a funny twist, now coaches the Flyers. He actually jumped around between these two teams throughout his career. And in the Philly sweater is Jim Cummins just before he was traded to Tampa Bay in 1994.

(See how I can tie anything back to the Lightning?)

I'm wondering why this is on the concepts page. I mean, they technically are not concepts. These are jerseys that have been worn before.

LOVE IT!! Wish both teams would use these! I work as an Usher at CONSOL Energy Center and I worked the Pens/Caps game (1/15), so wonderful to see the Caps in those 80's white uniforms (wish NHL would go back to home team wear white though, actually owned a blank CCM Red Caps road uniform)

Great set, I love that these jerseys have actually faced off against each other before unlike other winter classics. I personally want to see the Carolina Hurricanes play against the Capitals in the 2015 winter Classic. Carolina could wear green Whalers fauxback jerseys and Washington could wear these and we'd have a red vs green game right after Christmas!!

Report is that the flyers are going to be in the WC. This didn't come from nothing.

If Columbus makes some noise in the playoffs, I think they would work vs the Capitals. They are a new division rival and a team who hasnt been in the Heritage Classic. I can't see any other team in the East who no one wants to see in an outdoor game again. I suppose you could go with a west team, but it wouldnt have the same feel.

A lot of the first choices to play Washington have already played 2 or 3 outdoor games, how about Boston or Buffalo?

@Joe D.: I get where you're coming from. It's really just an expansion of the definition, in my mind. It's not so much a jersey design concept as a game design concept. If that makes sense.

As great as this is, I'd rather the Caps be in white and the Flyers in orange, since the orange version of this is my favorite Flyers jersey ever. It would still be awesome to see.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Caps go with the red version of the throwback, to fill in the last piece of the puzzle...but really, it would disappoint me to see them not acknowledging the blue/gold era...

In any case, I wouldn't mind seeing this matchup, though.

I love that red Capitals jersey. I hope they bring it back.

I would love to see the Red Stars and Stripes be brought back for this game (with the white pants of course...) or even the blue crash landing eagle. However I've been told that the Caps are developing something entirely new for the Clunker next year.

Note to the NHL - please do this matchup in these jerseys. Although now that it has been suggested, I'm sure they will go in another direction. At least for the jerseys.

It is kinda fun to see the Caps in throwbacks occasionally, but their uniforms were probably the blandest in the league and their current version makes the best out of their concept; they look way flashier now while still being pretty simple.
The Flyers unis from the 80s were probably their best.
Outdoors, I'd put the Caps against Ottawa.
