Collection 4: Ivall Redux

I've got a handful of new concepts to share from Mike Ivall. He's tackling Predators, Thrashers and Islanders as well as revisiting the Bolts and Leafs.

Knowing the Lightning are looking to ditch the black and silver and go with a blue/white color scheme, Mike thought perhaps they might try a two-tone blue. Personally, I'm a fan.

A lot of you have been asking about how to make your own concept art. Unfortunately, there's no simple or quick way to throw stuff together. Most of the designers who submit work are very talented graphic artists with knowledge of image editing software. If you want something free to get started, look up something like Gimp or Inkscape. I'd love to put together some kind of tutorial, but it's not really that simple. I will try to get together some templates at some point though. So keep an eye out for that.

I understand what they were trying to do with the Predator's concept...but those colors just don't work. Love the Tampa Bay set, but I'm not really sure what the team is trying to do by taking the Tampa Bay off the home jersey, doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I like the Thrasher's concepts. Very different, very unique. Definitely NOT for everyone, but I like that they are trying something different. The Maple Leaf concepts are, well, Maple Leaf concepts. You can only do so much with those kinds of things. The Isles one is ok, nothing too special.

That Lightning concept is the best "non-silver" concept I've seen. I love the fact that the "Tampa Bay" is going away on the homes(baby steps), and this concept shows just how sharp that it can look.

There are many Thrashers fans that have been hoping for just the "head" logo for the crest for a long time. I just feel the logo is better suited to a jersey with stripes running down the arm instead of across it. I'd level the logo off, too.

I like the Tampa idea - but what if you take the circle around the lightning bolt an make it an oval and widen the thickness of the line at 3 and 9 o'clock.

That maroon Thrashers one is just about directly spot on. A little bit thicker blue stripe along the sleeves and the bottom and a slight rotation of the Thrasher head towards the horizontal would make it a winner for sure.

I want to see the Islanders in orange for their 3rd as much as almost everyone else, but I don't think it can work. I have yet to see an orange Isles concept that I really enjoy. I love the Thrashers concepts. I've always been a fan of that bird logo. Regarding the Preds concepts, it just looks like a Preds concept with red in it. Maybe a darker shade of red? I would love to see the Leafs in a '67 throwback. That logo that is used here though has been commonly mistaken for the original. The orig has a different font which features a lower case N.

Predators:

I love that the Predators are going for a simpler color scheme, and you jazzed it up a bit with red (which makes sense and predators tend do deal a lot in red stuff). As a bit of an off the wall suggestion, I wonder what the preds would look like in black/silver/neon green - keep the same logo but go with a super spy color scheme.

Lightning:

Awesome! It gets rid of the black like Stevie Y wants (and what Stevie Y wants he gets), but it doesn't look like the Maple Leafs. Perfect.

Thrashers:

Love the head logo, especially the way it is angled down - I think that gives it a very unique look. I think the maroon one will make you more fans in the state of GA because then the jersey is red like UGA and yellow like GT. Well done!

Maple Leafs:

My favorite Leafs jersey, and I'm pretty sure many Leafs fans would like it since this is what they wore the last time they won a cup!

Islanders:

That's a lot of orange, probably the best I've seen of orange Islanders jerseys, but still not a huge fan.

Sorry, but no.... just, no.... Predators in red? They're not my team, so can't speak for their fanbase, but my word that's just not right!

I really like the Isles one, though. Orange is a really underutilized color in the NHL, and when done right it can look very sharp.

No disrespect to Mike, but these are pretty terrible.
I'm not looking forward to that Tampa Bay rebrand at all.

Chris, i have inkscape and ive made tons of concepts but i dont know how to get them to you

@MINH

I don't think its far to say that they are all horrible. Given what NHL teams seem to want done with their jerseys I'd say he made the best of it. Except for the red on Nashville. THAT is horrible.

Austin, you can email them to me. Address is in the Quick Links box at the top of the page.

As a Preds fan, I really hope that Mike's move to Tennessee state flag red is not indicative of the "unsettling" news that Chris has reported regarding the team's switch for next year....

Predators fan here! It looks nice - the Preds concept - but red just isn't right for their jersey. Maybe as an accent color, or maaaybe as a complimentary color, but definitely not as a base.

I like the home Lightning logo with the "Tampa Bay" removed. I say remove it from the away jersey as well! If it's an identifiable logo, there's no need to have the city/state name or the team nickname incorporated into it.

Heck, that might be a good idea with regards to a Maple Leafs jersey. We might actually get something that looks somewhat different from all the slightly modified Leafs jerseys of the past. (Not including the St. Patrick's jerseys they once wore. :^)

Anyhoo...

A suggestion for the Thrashers sweaters.

I like the waist and sleeve stripes concept, but the colors are a little off for me.

If it is an easy interchange (just to shuffle colors around):
HOME:
Keep chest/side/upper arms identical - dark blue
Shoulders - Make Thrashers Ice Blue
Collar - Ice Blue
-STRIPES:
--Bottom yellow - make white
--bottom white - keep white
--maroon - make yellow
--top white - make ice blue
-- top yellow - make ice blue

In effect I like the layout of the islanders jersey, so what I'm saying is make it similar to that. Atlanta promotes the idea of "Blueland" and I think that should come through on the jersey.

As for the AWAY:
Same as above, but make what was dark blue - white
Make the lower white portion (indicated as lower yellow & white) - dark blue [similar to the Pens home/away; their home white sleeves become black on the away).

Just my thoughts, but if I can figure out how to alter these in Illustrator (i edit video and an not fluent in image editing/creation) I'll send you an email on it.

Anyway just my thoughts, and thanks for the visual anticipation/aids, always fun to see others ideas.

forgot to mention the Logo. The head is nice (way better than the Thrash-nado). But I'd prefer to see a modified original logo (the overhead flying bird from the first generation sweaters)... Maybe the thrash head as a sleeve patch.

Jan 31 · 5:09 PM PST | Unregistered CommenterLegion

Yeah, I like Atlanta's T-shaped flying bird logo the best. Don't really like the bird head compared to the regular logo though. But it would look a lot better on the front of the jersey than the shoulder. Hate the head as a shoulder patch.

The only thing I don't like about the regular logo is the hockey stick. Very few logos look good with a hockey stick - or any equipment - integrated into the design. The Sharks logo works because the shark isn't actually playing with the stick. LOL!

And while I don't really follow football (though I'd much rather watch football than baseball, basketball or soccer), I just can't stand that stupid Miami Dolphins logo! I can't believe the helmet in the logo has lasted this long. Awful. shakeshead

Anyhoo...
