0285: Simplifying the Flames

The Flames are another one of those teams that have been getting overlooked lately. Today, we get an interesting design for Calgary from Kevin Dion.
Kevin wanted to share some updates to his Flames concept.
One more update from Kevin. Here's a white version of his Flames jersey.

like the colours, but the waist band/stripe is rather tiny, would prefer a more substantial stripe. Do we need yet another Boston shoulder yoke copy? Thats the second one on display this week. Not a fan of those.
Wish the Flames would use that BEAUTIFUL Red/Yellow 80's throwback (whats old is NEW again) as their home uniform, then while you're at it create a away white version to go with it.
This was one of this "I just wanna see what I can come up with" type of concepts. I've always loved the black logo on red jersey idea they implemented, but I never liked the triangular striping of their old jersey, and I feel like their new jersey is just a mess. I decided to remove the Atlanta Flames logo on the shoulder considering it wasn't the same organization. I made a few other minor changes, but I'm OK with the revisions. Not my favorite concept I've come up with, but thank you for posting it so I could see what others think!
I'm a diehard Flames fan I really like the idea of a black shoulder yolk for the home jersey but I thing the stripping can be improved and I would also love to see the Flaming Horse Head shoulder logo brought back.
Big fan of all the ideas. I like the jersey with either the wordmark on the shoulder or the Atlanta logo to show their heritage. Great work.
Not bad, but I generally prefer the classic 80s look for the Flames, without the black.
On a side note, wouldn't the Abbotsford Heat look a hundred times better if they adopted the Atlanta Flames "A" in place of that clunky late 90s-looking wordmark?
It's a nice looking jersey, but if you changed the yellow to white and made a couple minor adjustments, you have the New Jersey Devils.
Going with that thought (and not to criticize Kevin Dion's concept, which is completely fine and adequate) but we tend to see a lot of "retro" designs featured in these concept pages. Those are all well and good and, more often than not, those more "original" designs are either just crazy to look at or too difficult to implement. However, I'm becoming less and less impressed with concepts that simply transfer features from currently used uniforms except with a few minor colour changes.
Compared to any other sport, the hockey uniform provides a tremendous blank slate that has far more potential that the limited number of striping and other colour patterns we see in today's NHL. We have plenty of great designers getting their work shown here. I'd just like to see a bit more range.
Or maybe it's just me. Does anyone else have thoughts on this?
I just want a white-hot C back. Is that too much to ask?
Also, a throwback to the Atlanta team is a nice gesture, but I don't really think the A has a place on a Calgary Flames jersey, save for on the Assistant Captains' chests.
These are sweet but lose the Atlanta A on the shoulders. Totally unecessary having another city identity on your uni. The only place I would agree with it is as the Assistant Captain A.
