0603: Caps and Whalers
Saturday · Oct 12 · 2013 | 8:00 AM PDT 7 Comments
After we learned the Capitals will host the 2015 NHL Winter Classic, Bryan Dyck started thinking about who their opponent should be. How about the Carolina Hurricanes... as the Hartford Whalers? But as much as I loved Washington's Blue and Bronze Age, I'm not sure I can see them in anything other than the classic red throwback. Plus, it would make sense up against Whaler green. What's your take on this Winter Classic proposal?

As a minor technical thing, I'm sure any RBK version of that Caps jersey would have the corner of the sash line up with the apron string on the right (player's view) side. Would love to see bronze on the Caps though. It says "government town" more than "patriotic American", which the Blue Jackets also have as part of their identity.
I'm in the minority but I like the blue/bronze eagle Caps jerseys so much better than their red white and blue script logo.
That would be a sexy match-up. I would put the chance of either of these jerseys even being considered at right around 0%, but I sure wish it would happen. Two beauties.
Funny. It just so occurs I happen to be wearing that same Capitals sweater as I type this (albeit sans the script on the black stripe). It's from my favorite era of Caps jerseys. They were a unique design and had a great color scheme. I saw a game or two when they wore them. So, naturally, next to the fact that there really no other else jersey era to pay tribute for the Caps at a Winter Classic, I would die to see them break one of these out for a game, and use them as an alternate.
Sad as it is, most of my favorite jerseys originate from an unpopular era, where teams like the Caps, Sabres, Penguins, Oilers and Islanders wore "anti-traditional" designs, if you will, that are very stray from what most of the fans prefer, which is the original (or in some cases, the current, for the teams that brought the old designs back). On the other hand, it feels go to have a unique taste, and be the 1%, as it were.
Anywho, the Hurricanes' idea is great, too. They need to pay homage to that good old team. They had a great identity too, with an ingenious logo (there's a hidden "H" inside the W!), and great, classic jerseys (thought I prefer the ones they wore in their latter years). This post easily gets a 5 stars from me.
I love the concept of seeing a Whalers jersey, but I don't think the Hurricanes brass are about to forego national branding exposure by wearing the colours of their former city.
The league should just as well expand back to Hartford. :)
don't see the Whalers' jersey happening. I feel like they wouldn't want to even if the Canes could because it's sort of mocking Hartford and idk if Canes fans would like to see it.
also interestingly, while thinking about previous Winter Classic jerseys, not only has a team yet to draw inspiration from a previous franchise(except if you count the Detroit Cougars), a team that had previously located has yet to be in a WC. So this really would be a first for the WC.
I would rather see the Whalers wear the navy blue with colored logo against this Capitals sweater. That is if they are allowed to. You don't see too much Whaler memorabilia going around.
